Recently there has been much emphasis placed on the importance of leaf detritus processing to the energetics of stream invertebrates. This study was designed primarily to assess the effects of municipal effluent on the ability of a stream community to utilize leaf detritus, and secondarily to evaluate the extent of the pollution of the White River by the Fayetteville, Arkansas, effluent discharge. Physical and chemical water quality and benthos were sampled periodically at one station upstream and two stations downstream from the discharge, and in the Richland Creek tributary. Selection Of Scales For Growth Analysis Of Largemouth Bass, Donald C. Jackson, Raj V. Kilambi

Scales from four regions of the body of largemouth bass were compared for efficacy in estimating fish length at the time of scale formation and at capture. The scales from above and below the lateral line in the pectoral and caudal peduncle regions yielded intercepts of 64.73, 52.36, 19.77 and 25.81 respectively for the total length-scale radius relationship. These intercept values represent the fish length at the time of scale formation. By the regression of estimated lengths at capture on empirical lengths it was found that the caudal peduncle scales were better suited in predicting fish length.

Comparison Of Two Year Classes Of Hybrid Grass Carp And Grass Carp For Aquatic Plant Control, Mike Freeze, Scott Henderson

Two year classes of grass carp and F, hybrids resulting from bighead carp male x grass carp female were compared at various stocking densities for aquatic plant control. One and two year old grass carp exhibited higher survival rates and better growth rates than the same age hybrid grass carp. The presence of grass carp or hybrid grass carp decreased both Secchi disc transparencies and dissolved oxygen values. Grass carp had a greater negative effect upon these measurements because they removed the vegetation quicker than the hybrid grass carp. Short Creek Oolite (Lower Mississippian) Deposition, War Eagle Quarry, Madison County, Arkansas, Barbara A. Lisle

The Short Creek Oolite is the only formally designated member of the Lower Mississippian Boone Formation. Although oolite deposits are often considered to be formed in shoal areas, detailed study of the War Eagle Short Creek disclosed characteristics incompatible with deposition as an oolite shoal. At the War Eagle Quarry, the Short Creek Oolite occurs between deep water strata and there is a conspicuous absence of cross-stratification and other shallow water bedding features. Modal analysis revealed a lower oolith content than found in Recent oolite shoals or in the Short Creek Oolite of Missouri, which has been interpreted as a …

Increased population levels of the dark ricefield mosquito, Psorophora columbiae (Dyar and Knab), have been shown to be associated with rice cultivation in Arkansas and several other states. Four standard New Jersey light traps were operated daily between May 30 and October 2 of 1981 and 1982 to determine the relative abundance and seasonal occurrence of this species in NE Arkansas. The effect of trap distance from nearby rice on the number of adult P. columbiae collected was assessed by comparing weekly totals from 2 traps located within 0.9 km of rice fields with totals from 2 traps situated beyond …

It appears that in today’s United States, the burden of disease prevention is assigned to the consumer. This study examines perceptions, health related information, and demographic data of a sample of elderly Arkansas consumers, with respect to preventive health care. The 226 respondents of the survey are members of the Arkansas Household Research Panel and over fifty-five years of age.

The data gathered were subjected to standard parametric and nonparametric statistical tests, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and discriminant analysis. The analysis identified two major segments. The wide use of soil-applied herbicides necessitates an understanding of their fate in soil if we are to use them in the most beneficial manner. All herbicides have some degree of water solubility and the field performance of many are dependent on ample, timely availability of soil moisture. It is important that different aspects of soil-herbicide-water interactions be thoroughly investigated. An excess use of water for irrigation purposes can result in the downward movement of herbicides in the soil profile. Subsoils are less adsorptive and a decreased degradation potential exists when herbicides move below the top 15 cm. In sandy …

The herbicide atrazine is used extensively to control broadleaf and grass weeds in such crops as sorghum and corn. A small portion of the atrazine may be lost from the area of application by surface runoff and could enter a stream or lake. The objective of this study was to evaluate atrazine degradation, sorption, and bioconcentration in watersediment systems. The results indicated that sediments with lower pH values and higher organic matter levels adsorbed higher levels of atrazine than sediments with neutral pH values and lower organic matter levels. A new technique was developed to measure the amount of 5-bromo-2 '-deoxyurdine (BrdUrd), a thymidine analogue, rapidly and conveniently in blood, and it was applied to measure the concentration of BrdUrd during the initiation of a paradigm for the labeling of DNA to measure the induction of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) by genotoxic agents. Radio labelled BrdUrd was used and blood was drawn from the abdominal aorta in pregnant Sprague-Dawley derived D rats. Using the hplc, the BrdUrd peak was easily identifiable and separable from its metabolites. The BrdUrd level in the blood stabilized in 30 minutes, and a level …

Qualities and quantities of parameters composing the bog systems in Northeast Arkansas are not entirely reflective of those defining bogs of the northern United States. While pH is restricting to the organisms of each bog studied (4.8-6.9), the major limiting factor is the amount of available water. Three acidophilic bogs with shallow water depths (2-30 cm) yielded a total of 75 aquatic macroinvertebrate taxa. The bog with greatest surface area supported 67 taxa and a mean numerical standing crop of 14 organisms/2 hr sampling period. The bog with the smallest surface area had 13 taxa and a mean standing crop …

Arkansas' wild commercial fishery industry was surveyed to evaluate commercial fish products produced within the state. The total wild commercial catch for the period of 1 July 1980 to 30 June 1981 was approximately 8,680,124 kg with a value of $6,245,967. These values represent an increase of approximately 3% from the previous year. The bulk of the commercial harvest was made up of buffalo fishes (Ictiobus spp.), catfishes (Ictalurus spp), gars (Lepisosteus spp.) and carp (Cyprinus carpio). The number of commercial fishermen remained relatively unchanged from 1979-1980, with 3,843 licensed fishermen operating on the state's waterways. The number of licensed …

Leaf Detritus Processing In An Ozark Cave Stream, Arthur V. Brown, Mark D. Schram

Detritus processing rates and mechanisms were investigated in an Ozark cave stream using post oak (Quercus stellata) leaf packs. The 5 g leaf packs lost ca. 30% of their dry weight within 84 days, resulting in a calculated K value of 0.05. This was an unexpectedly high rate of utilization. Diversity of invertebrates associated with the leaf packs was very low. Stygobromus ozarkensis (Amphipoda) was the only shredder. The two isopods, Caecidotea stiladactyla and Lirceus sp. were the only collectors observed other than a single species of oligochaete worm. Our data indicated that leaf detritus processing rates are virtually independent …

A preliminary study of spiders concentrated in the eastern section of the Ozark Mountain Area was made for the purpose of determining spider fauna in an on-going research effort to elucidate the total spider fauna of the entire state. At present, 247 species of spiders have been reported.
