Human induced pluripotent stem (hiPS) cells present the opportunity to advance tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for treating many diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, and cancer. In recent years, stem cell research has made progress in advancing cell therapy techniques. Similar to human embryonic stem (hES) cells, hiPS cells can differentiate into the three germ layers, which include mesorderm, ectoderm, and endoderm. Thus, they have the potential of being differentiated into all types of cells that are required for tissue repair and regeneration. Drug delivery is described as the localized sustained delivery of a pharmaceutical agent to the systemic blood circulation and hence to the site of action to produce a desired pharmacological effect [1]. There are three principle ways of drug delivery, first being the injection of the drug loaded on microspheres in this method of drug delivery, microspheres are formed using a combination of ink-jet technology and single emulsion-solvent evaporation techniques. Enhancing The Differentiation Efficiency Of Human Embryonic Stem Cells Into Insulin-Secreting β-Cells, Katherine Rutledge

Recent studies have shown that human embryonic stem cells possess the ability to differentiate into almost any cell type in the bod and they can self-renew in culture conditions (Baetge, D'Amour et al. 26). As the number of Americans with Type 1 Diabetes continues to increase, innovative methods of treating this chronic illness must be developed in order to improve the quality of life for the affected individuals. Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) have shown the potential to differentiate successfully into insulin-secreting β-cells, and these cultured β-cells can be used for cell-treatment therapies to replace the deficient β-cells in diabetes …

Act 35 was a product of the Lakeview v Huckabee case and the related Extraordinary Legislative Session. The law § 6-15-2101 of the Arkansas code required the establishment of three school ratings: a rating of the school’s current academic performance (or status), a rating of the school’s academic improvement (see the OEP policy brief on the new improvement rating) 1 , and a rating based on the school’s fiscal practices. The first set of improvement scores were reported based on the standardized tests administered in spring of 2007 and 2008. The first ratings based on current academic performance are to …

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
A previous reservoir model of Lake Wister, Oklahoma suggested that internal P sources were dominant, and that a watershed management plan need not be developed to address external sources. The objectives of this study were to collect intact sediment cores from three sites at Lake Wister and measure sediment O₂ demand (SOD) and soluble reactive P (SRP) release to the overlying water during lab incubations under quiescent conditions. The measured SOD rates were between 9.9 and 22.6 mg m⁻² hr⁻¹ on average across the three sites, where the shallow headwaters site had the least SOD. The SRP release rates were …

Rapid Reservoir Inundation Causes Complete Extirpation Of The Eastern Collared Lizard (Crotaphytus Collaris) Along The Shoreline Of Bull Shoals Lake In Northern Arkansas, S. E. Trauth
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The eastern collared lizard (Crotaphytus collaris) is a large saxicolous predatory lizard, which dwells in patchy, cedar glade environments characteristic of much of the Ozarks. The species can also be found in scattered populations along rocky shoreline habitats of large impoundment reservoirs of northern Arkansas. These lizards time their entrance into and exit from underground, overwintering retreats with decreasing and increasing ambient temperatures of the fall and spring months. During an average spring, several sustained days of warm temperatures from mid-March into April are the primary environmental cues for collared lizards to exit their shelters.
