A Laboratory-Based Experimental Test Of Reasons For Living: Effects On Behavioral Approach Toward A Suicide-Related Stimulus, Sasha Micaella Rojas
A Laboratory-Based Experimental Test Of Reasons For Living: Effects On Behavioral Approach Toward A Suicide-Related Stimulus, Sasha Micaella Rojas
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are few laboratory-based experiments that examine the effects of suicide-related risk or protective factors on suicide-related outcomes. Consistent with extant evidence-based theoretical models and treatments for suicidal behavior, it appears that increasing awareness of reasons for living may reduce risk for suicidal behavior. Thus, the current study represents an initial effort to experimentally examine the impact of bringing awareness to one’s most important reason for living on behavioral approach towards a suicide-related stimulus. Random assignment was used to assign an unselected undergraduate sample of 78 participants to complete either a script-driven imagery procedure specific to the most important reason …
Mitochondrial Mrna Translation Is Required For Maintenance Of Oxidative Capacity, David Lee
Mitochondrial Mrna Translation Is Required For Maintenance Of Oxidative Capacity, David Lee
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative metabolism is required to produce adequate energy to sustain human life. A primary example of deteriorating oxidative capacity is seen in the cardiac musculature during chronic heart failure. This suggests that by improving oxidative potential, chronic heart disease could be mitigated and one approach to accomplish this may be through targeting the mt-mRNA translation system. Purpose: This investigation’s purpose was to characterize disruptions in mt-mRNA translation machinery in multiple forms of cardiomyopathy and to determine if mitochondrial mRNA translation initiation factor (mtIF2) is necessary to maintain oxidative capacity in cardiomyocytes. Methods Using a combination of animal and cell culture …

The main research objectives were to: i) understand chemical and physical characteristics in soils prone to H2S toxicity, ii) determine influential soil characteristics on the incidence of H2S toxicity, iii) determine ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) fertilizer additions influence on H2S toxicity, and iv) predict when and where H2S will occur. Three greenhouse experiments were conducted using Arkansas field …
Unravelling The Layers Of Cell Wall Synthesis And Function In Rice, Ritu Mihani
Unravelling The Layers Of Cell Wall Synthesis And Function In Rice, Ritu Mihani
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The plant cell wall is of critical importance to plant growth and survival, functioning in maintaining structural integrity, supporting cell expansion, and acting as the first line of defense in response to biotic and abiotic stresses. The major components of the cell wall are cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin, and pectin. Recent focus on the transcriptional machinery regulating cell wall biosynthesis in plants has revealed many key transcription factors responsible for orchestrating cell wall deposition. However, many of these TFs act redundantly and work coherently with a suite of TFs to activate the cell wall biosynthetic machinery. Heterologous expression of TFs is …

Charcoal rot of soybean (Glycine max (L.), caused by Macrophomina phaseolina is a disease of economic significance in the United States. The identification and quantification of the resistance is difficult, and very little is known about the genetics and markers linked to the charcoal rot (CR) resistance genes. Current assay methods can be time consuming, and data may vary between tests. The objectives of this study were to 1) create a robust seed plate assay (SPA) for CR resistance by comparing results with cut-stem and CFUI assays; 2) correlate and compare field data disease assessments with SPA; 3) identify QTLs …
Combining Translational And Functional Genomic Approaches To Augment Management Strategies Of Plant Parasitic Nematodes, Sandeep Sharma Khatiwada
Combining Translational And Functional Genomic Approaches To Augment Management Strategies Of Plant Parasitic Nematodes, Sandeep Sharma Khatiwada
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Plant-parasitic nematodes pose a major threat to crop yield worldwide. Discontinued use of harmful chemicals has prompted the search for alternative management strategies that are effective yet environmentally friendly. Harpin proteins, which are derived from bacteria, and nematophagous fungi, natural predators of nematodes, are ideal for biological control of plant-parasitic nematodes. However, research on the efficacy of harpin proteins on nematodes, and biology of nematophagous fungi is minimal. Previously, a taxonomically uncharacterized nematophagous fungus designated ARF18 effectively suppressed nematode populations in soil. The overarching goal of this dissertation is to utilize applied and functional genomic approaches to augment management of …
State Dependent Function And Dynamics In Cerebral Cortical Networks, Leila Fakhraei
State Dependent Function And Dynamics In Cerebral Cortical Networks, Leila Fakhraei
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cerebral cortex exhibits vigorous ongoing, internal neural activity even with no sensory input is present or the animal is minimally engaged in a task or behavior. This internal ongoing activity is not static; the ‘cortical state’ varies ranging from synchronous and highly correlated activity to asynchronous and weakly correlated neural activity. The main goal of the work presented here is to understand how changes in cortical states effect several aspects of cortical function and dynamics.
To meet this goal, we did three separate projects. First, we compared the predictability of neuronal network dynamics across cortical states in somatosensory cortex of …

Engineering The Structure Of The Human Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor To Enhance Its Stability And Cell Proliferation Activity, Julie Davis Eberle
Engineering The Structure Of The Human Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor To Enhance Its Stability And Cell Proliferation Activity, Julie Davis Eberle
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Human acidic fibroblast growth factor (hFGF1) is a protein well known for its role in cell growth and differentiation. To elicit these cell-signaling processes, hFGF1 non-selectively binds to any one of the seven cell surface hFGF receptor isoforms. Due to its significant involvement in tissue repair activity, hFGF1 is a prime candidate for novel wound healing therapeutics. However, one drawback toward its use as a novel wound healing therapeutic is the poor inherent thermal stability of hFGF1, as it has been found to unfold near physiological temperature. The cause of this instability is strong electrostatic repulsion created by a dense …
Combining Microdialysis And Electrophysiology In Cerebral Cortex To Delineate Functional Implications Of Acetylcholine Gradients, Tazima Nur
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The neuronal network in cerebral cortex is a dynamic system that can undergo changes in collective neural activity as the organism changes its behavior. For example, during sleep and quiet restful awake state, many neurons tend to fire together in synchrony. In contrast, during alert awake states, firing patterns of neurons tend to be more asynchronous, firing more independently. These changes in population-level synchrony are defined as changes in cortical state. Response to sensory input is state-dependent, i.e., change in cortical state can impact the sensory information processing in cortex and introduce trial-to-trial variability in response to the same repeated …

Applications Of Reservoir Limnology Theory And Steady-State Modeling To Eutrophication Management In Beaver Lake, Arkansas, Matthew Rich
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Reservoir limnology theory predicts that phytoplankton biomass (PB) is greatest in riverine-transition zones and least in lacustrine zones leading to an inverse pattern in water clarity. These theoretical patterns were utilized to create a statistical model of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), an indicator of PB, and Secchi transparency (ST), an indicator of Chl-a, in Beaver Lake, Arkansas, a 12,800-ha reservoir, in order to hindcast historical conditions. Sampling for Chl-a, ST, and photic depth occurred semimonthly at 12 locations along a 78-km transect from the river inflow to the dam during the 2015 growing season. The ratio of Chl-a and ST measured at …
Understanding The Evolution Of Surface Texture Under Boundary Lubrication, Salil T. Bapat
Understanding The Evolution Of Surface Texture Under Boundary Lubrication, Salil T. Bapat
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research was to understand the evolution of surface texture under boundary/mixed lubrication (BL). Significant material/energy losses occur during BL because of direct contact between the two surfaces. Traditionally, tribofilms have been studied extensively for BL while textures have been used as a static engineering design parameter to enhance lubricant film properties. However, texture is dynamic at the tribological mating interface, where both physical and chemical interactions are continuously modulated. The evolution and the interplay between the tribofilm and texture is least studied in the literature, which is the focus of this research.

The Effect Of Teacher Race On Student Perceptions In Low-Income Schools, Benton M. Brown
The Effect Of Teacher Race On Student Perceptions In Low-Income Schools, Benton M. Brown
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the wake of the Brown v. Board of Education (1954) decision, thousands of teachers of color lost their jobs as black students were integrated into mostly white schools. The number of black teachers in schools across the United States has never recovered resulting in a teaching workforce that is less diverse than the student population that they teach. Many studies have examined the possible impact of this discrepancy including the possibility that this has contributed to the black-white achievement gap that exists in the United States. Other studies have examined the non-academic impacts of a less diverse workforce including …

Effects Of Hydration And Mineralization On The Mechanical Behavior Of Collagen Fibrils, Marco Fielder
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Bone is a composite biomaterial with a structural load-bearing function. Understanding the biomechanics of bone is important for characterizing factors such as age, trauma, or disease, and in the development of scaffolds for tissue engineering and bioinspired materials. At the nanoscale, bone is primarily composed of collagen protein, apatite crystals, and water. Though several studies have characterized nanoscale bone mechanics as the mineral content changes, the effect of water, mineral, and carbon nanotube (CNT) content and distribution in fibril gap and overlap regions is unexplored. This study used molecular dynamics to investigate the change in collagen fibril deformation mechanisms as …
Novel Methodology For Emboli Analog Production And In-Vitro Simulation Of Acute Ischemic Stroke, Anne Preut
Novel Methodology For Emboli Analog Production And In-Vitro Simulation Of Acute Ischemic Stroke, Anne Preut
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stroke is the leading cause of disability and a primary cause of mortality, resulting in an estimated $33 billion dollars spent on healthcare, rehabilitation and lost productivity in the United States each year. The most prevalent cause of stroke incidents are acute ischemic events, manifested as blood clots in the vasculature supplying the brain. Current gold standard treatments have improved since 2006 with the introduction of mechanical stent retrievers; however, several issues with the current treatments to acute ischemic stroke remain. Thrombolysis of the clot with a tissue plasminogen activator may lead to weakening the vessel wall and consequently, hemorrhaging. …
Perceived Maternal Invalidation And Drinking Behavior: The Role Of Action Control, Elise Ann Warner
Perceived Maternal Invalidation And Drinking Behavior: The Role Of Action Control, Elise Ann Warner
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol use disorder is one of the most prevalent disorders worldwide. As such, researchers have examined factors contributing to alcohol use. Perception of emotional experiences in childhood as invalidating by parents is one factor that has been found to predict later alcohol use, though less is known about maternal invalidation specifically. Parental invalidation has also been found to predict difficulty regulating affective states (i.e., negative and positive affect), which is also a determinant of alcohol use. Further, researchers have studied temptation to drink and restraint from drinking as related to alcohol use to better understand drinking behavior. Though there appears …
Computational Fluid Dynamics Model For Air Velocity Through A Poultry Transport Trailer In A Holding Shed, Christian Heymsfield
Computational Fluid Dynamics Model For Air Velocity Through A Poultry Transport Trailer In A Holding Shed, Christian Heymsfield
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Broiler production in Arkansas was valued at over $3.6 billion in 2013 (University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service). Consequently, improvement in any phase of the production process can have significant economic impact and animal welfare implications. One area of concern for the poultry industry is thermal stress experienced by the birds after arrival at the processing plant and before they are taken in to be processed, during which time they are left to wait in holding sheds. Various cooling strategies exist to mitigate heat stress in holding sheds, but in most cases it is unlikely that they …

Defending Wild Dogs: Population Dynamics And Disease In Endangered African Wild Dogs, Elizabeth Claire Arredondo
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) are endangered carnivores whose population is decreasing from habitat loss and fragmentation, interspecific competition, and disease. Survival rates are especially low in Kruger National Park (KNP), though it is unclear why. I estimated the abundance in KNP and survival rates over different time spans, six years and nine months, using public photographic survey data. In 2015, there were 298 (SE=12.1) individuals. Using a mark-recapture analysis in program R, I found that the survival rate between 2009-2015 was only 3.2%, and within the 9-month survey period (September 2014 – June 2015), monthly survival rates for the …
