Phylogenetic Diversity Of Arkansas Vineyard And Wine Microbiota, Natacha Cureau May 2020

Phylogenetic Diversity Of Arkansas Vineyard And Wine Microbiota, Natacha Cureau

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Microorganisms inhabiting the soil, leaves, and grapes in vineyards influence the terroir, a set of environmental factors that impact wine characteristics. Previously, the main method to identify microorganisms was to culture on different media, but a large portion (> 99%) could not be cultured and were consequently unidentified. However, the emergence of new molecular tools has enabled further study and identification of microorganisms such as indigenous vineyard microbiota. The objective of this research was to investigate the phylogenetic diversity of Arkansas vineyard and wine microbiota using high-throughput sequencing. In terms of the Arkansas vineyards, the fungal and bacterial diversity of …

Evolutionary Inference From Admixed Genomes: Implications Of Hybridization For Biodiversity Dynamics And Conservation, Tyler Chafin May 2020

Evolutionary Inference From Admixed Genomes: Implications Of Hybridization For Biodiversity Dynamics And Conservation, Tyler Chafin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hybridization as a macroevolutionary mechanism has been historically underappreciated among vertebrate biologists. Yet, the advent and subsequent proliferation of next-generation sequencing methods has increasingly shown hybridization to be a pervasive agent influencing evolution in many branches of the Tree of Life (to include ancestral hominids). Despite this, the dynamics of hybridization with regards to speciation and extinction remain poorly understood. To this end, I here examine the role of hybridization in the context of historical divergence and contemporary decline of several threatened and endangered North American taxa, with the goal to illuminate implications of hybridization for promoting—or impeding—population persistence in …

The purpose of the current study is to examine how ideology and situational factors shape terrorist target selection in the United States. While a growing number of studies have examined target selection by terrorists, the current study is the first to consider how combinations of factors present situated opportunities for terrorists to select particular types of targets as opposed to others. Guided by the situational crime prevention approach, this study relies on data from the American Terrorism Study (ATS) to measure attributes of incidents perpetrated by far-right and Islamic extremists and target selection. The outcomes of interest include government versus …

Comparative Geochemical Analysis Of Ordovician And Mississippian Cherts In Relation To The Northern Arkansas And The Tri-State Mississippi Valley-Type Ore Districts, Jonathan T. Chick May 2020

Comparative Geochemical Analysis Of Ordovician And Mississippian Cherts In Relation To The Northern Arkansas And The Tri-State Mississippi Valley-Type Ore Districts, Jonathan T. Chick

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It has been hypothesized that Ordovician, Mississippian, and younger carbonate and clastic formations found within the Ouachita Basin of west-central Arkansas and northward onto the Ozark Dome have experienced interaction with hydrothermal fluids due to tectonic forces produced by the Ouachita Orogeny. Lead (Pb) isotope analyses and resulting values produced through previous and concurrent geochemical studies of several formations indicate that the Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) ores were produced from a mixing and cooling of these sedimentary basinal brines by meteoric or connate waters. Reduction of sulfate to sulfide is one of the possible mechanisms by which MVT ore precipitation may …

Effect Of Ph And Lipid Composition On Membrane-Spanning Helices With Glutamic Acid Examined By Solid-State Nmr, Kelsey Marr

Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses

Transmembrane proteins constitute about 30% of the proteins in a mammalian cell and are involved in major biological processes. The dynamic properties of membrane proteins and the ionization states of particular side chains are important for biological function. The biophysical properties of membrane proteins nevertheless can be difficult to decode, particularly for glutamic acid in the lipid environment of cell membranes. To study the ionization of glutamic acid in transmembrane peptides, guest glutamic acid residues were substituted into the well-defined model helix of GWALP23 (acetyl-GGAL4WLALALALALAL16ALWLAGA-amide). These guest residues were placed at position L16 or L4 and specific 2H-labeled alanine residues …

As of 2017, vascular diseases contributed to 23.1% of all deaths in America. To address the need for more effective and sustainable treatment options for these ailments, stem cell differentiation and implantation has emerged as a viable alternative to standard bypass and graft insertions. A completely autologous treatment can be achieved by extracting adult stem cells, differentiating them into vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), and then reimplanting these cells at the affected tissue site. This study aims to investigate the efficiency of the VSMC differentiation from human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) by comparing 4 cell lines of untreated hMSCs with …

Structural And Functional Characterization Of Mitochondria With Trna Mutations, Brooke Henry May 2020

Structural And Functional Characterization Of Mitochondria With Trna Mutations, Brooke Henry

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is one of the most common disorders associated with mitochondrial tRNA mutations. One of the most common causes of MELAS is mutation in the MT-TL1 gene which codes for mitochondrial tRNA Leucine (UUR). Mutation in MT-TE gene, another mitochondrial gene which encodes for mitochondrial tRNA Glutamate (GAA/G), has been implicated in various mitochondrial related myopathies. It remains unclear how point mutations in these tRNA genes result in disease onset and progression. Here, we report an early comparative analysis of fibroblast cell lines derived from patients carrying two different tRNA mutations: m.3243A>G …

Use Of Acetolactate Synthase-Inhibiting Herbicides In Inzen Grain Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor L. Moench Ssp. Bicolor), Hunter Bowman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Grain sorghum is typically grown as a rotational crop in Arkansas because of its many benefits, one being the effective control of Palmer amaranth through the use of atrazine. However, limited options exist for postemergence (POST) control of weedy grasses within the crop. Inzen™ grain sorghum is the result of a nicosulfuron resistant weedy sorghum biotype cross-bred with a commercial line of grain sorghum. Inzen™ allows for safe use of over-the-top applications of nicosulfuron within the crop. Nicosulfuron is an acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicide, which has historically been used in corn for control of weedy grasses. Experiments were conducted in …

An Experimental Test Of The Effects Of Sleep Deprivation On Approach Behavior, Rebecca L. Campbell May 2020

An Experimental Test Of The Effects Of Sleep Deprivation On Approach Behavior, Rebecca L. Campbell

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Emotion regulation and sleep have been identified as mechanisms that may be involved in the development and maintenance of many mental health disorders. However, there has been little research into the relation between sleep and emotion regulation. To address this gap in knowledge, a novel study was conducted. We hypothesized that sleep deprived individuals would demonstrate less approach behavior toward a negatively valenced stimulus, as well as increased self-reported avoidance, compared to a control group. To test this, a randomized controlled experiment using a behavioral measure of approach and a self-report measure of avoidance was conducted. Fifty-two healthy individuals ages …

Shakespeare In The Eighteenth Century: Algorithm For Quotation Identification, Marion Pauline Chiariglione May 2020

Shakespeare In The Eighteenth Century: Algorithm For Quotation Identification, Marion Pauline Chiariglione

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quoting a borrowed excerpt of text within another literary work was infrequently done prior to the beginning of the eighteenth century. However, quoting other texts, particularly Shakespeare, became quite common after that. Our work develops automatic approaches to identify that trend. Initial work focuses on identifying exact and modified sections of texts taken from works of Shakespeare in novels spanning the eighteenth century. We then introduce a novel approach to identifying modified quotes by adapting the Edit Distance metric, which is character based, to a word based approach. This paper offers an introduction to previous uses of this metric within …

Peer Acceptance In The Lunchroom And Children’S Internalizing Symptoms, Jake Steggerda May 2020

Peer Acceptance In The Lunchroom And Children’S Internalizing Symptoms, Jake Steggerda

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is evidence to suggest that the context of the school lunchrooms provides children with rich opportunities for enhancing or hampering the quality of their relationships (Craig, Gregus, Elledge, Pastrana, & Cavell, 2016; Steggerda et al., in preparation). Although past research has linked children’s peer acceptance to their level of internalizing symptoms, few studies have examined peer acceptance within the lunchroom context. This study extends that work by examining associations between lunchroom peer acceptance (assessed via self- and peer-reports) and children’s internalizing symptoms. Participants were 676 fourth-grade students (50.7% female; 42.7% Hispanic/Latino, 30.3% White, 10% Pacific Islander, and 17% other) …

Stay-At-Home Motor Rehabilitation: Optimizing Spatiotemporal Learning On Low-Cost Capacitive Sensor Arrays, Reid Sutherland

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Repeated, consistent, and precise gesture performance is a key part of recovery for stroke and other motor-impaired patients. Close professional supervision to these exercises is also essential to ensure proper neuromotor repair, which consumes a large amount of medical resources. Gesture recognition systems are emerging as stay-at-home solutions to this problem, but the best solutions are expensive, and the inexpensive solutions are not universal enough to tackle patient-to-patient variability. While many methods have been studied and implemented, the gesture recognition system designer does not have a strategy to effectively predict the right method to fit the needs of a patient. …
