Development And Preliminary Validation Of The Sexual Minority Identity Emotion Scale, Jacob Goffnet, Samantha Robinson, Anna Hamaker, Mohammod Mahmudar Rahman, Sheree M. Schrager, Jeremy T. Goldbach Mar 2024

Development And Preliminary Validation Of The Sexual Minority Identity Emotion Scale, Jacob Goffnet, Samantha Robinson, Anna Hamaker, Mohammod Mahmudar Rahman, Sheree M. Schrager, Jeremy T. Goldbach

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Emotions influence health behaviors and outcomes, yet little research has examined the emotion–health relationship among sexual minorities. The few studies in this area have used general measures of feelings without regard for identity, despite the literature positing emotions as culturally and contextually specific. This critical limitation obscures inferences made in studies that have found emotions to predict mental health outcomes for sexual minorities. This study begins to address this gap by developing and examining the preliminary validation of the Sexual Minority Identity Emotion Scale, a measure of shame and pride specific to the identity experiences of sexual minority adolescents. The …

Stoner Instability-Mediated Large Magnetoelectric Effects In 2d Stacking Electrides, Zhigang Gui, Haiyan Zhu, Zhe Wang, M. Umar Farooq, Laurent Bellaiche, Li Huang

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Strong magnetoelectric effects in single-phase two-dimensional (2D) materials are extremely rare in nature. Here by first-principles calculations, we find a strong magnetoelectric coupling in polar stacking bilayer Hf2S that allows the reversal of net magnetic moments with the reversal of electric dipoles. Further analysis shows that such strong magnetoelectric effects benefit from the Stoner instability of surface Hf atoms triggered by polar stacking. Moreover, an unexpectedly large out-of-plane electric polarization (which is at least two times larger than that of bilayer BN) survives in the material, despite its metallicity. The large electric polarization is ascribed to the delocalized …

Does Sin Tax On The Legal Market Facilitate The Illicit Market? An Ex-Ante Assessment On The Us Cannabis Market, Yoohun Han, Khondoker Abdul Mottaleb, John N. Ng'ombe, Alvaro Durand-Morat

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sin tax is essential to reduce the harm caused by products like cannabis. However, excessive taxation may facilitate illicit markets. We examine sin tax policies' impact on legal and illicit cannabis markets in the selected US states. Using a Constant Elasticity of Substitution utility framework, we assess scenarios like sin tax increase and anti-illicit cannabis policies. Our findings indicate high sin taxes may drive consumers to illicit markets, but anti-illicit market policies could control its extent. However, there is a trade-off between market size, tax revenue, consumers' utility, and illicit market control. Thus, optimizing sin tax policies is challenging, necessitating …

Sustainable Shift: Analyzing Drivers For Low-Carbon Transportation Adoption In California’S Heavy-Duty And Off-Road Sectors, Vuban Chowdhury, Farzana Mehzabin Tuli, Suman Kumar Mitra

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The transportation sector stands out as a major challenge for California’s transition to a more sustainable transportation system, as it accounts for most of the greenhouse gas emissions. This underscores the urgency for government agencies to take decisive action in promoting the adoption of low-carbon transportation (LCT) within the heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) and off-road equipment (ORE) sectors. This study employs content analysis to investigate the impact of behavioral factors, specifically awareness and impression, on LCT adoption within these sectors. The analysis results are refined using a generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool. The results indicate that awareness about LCT, in conjunction …

Temperature Forecasts For The Continental United States: A Deep Learning Approach Using Multidimensional Features, Jahangir Ali, Linyin Cheng

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Accurate weather forecasts are critical for saving lives, emergency services, and future developments. Climate models such as numerical weather prediction models have made significant advancements in weather forecasts, but these models are computationally expensive and can be subject to inaccurate representations of complex natural interconnections. Alternatively, data-driven machine learning methods have provided new dimensions in assisting weather forecasts. In this study, we used convolutional neural networks (CNN) to assess how geopotential height at different levels of the troposphere may affect the predictability of extreme surface temperature (t2m) via two cases. Specifically, we analyzed temperature forecasts over the continental United States …

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article is an introduction to the rich domain of curriculum studies with specific reference to science teaching and learning. It is designed not as a systematic review or theoretical treatise but rather as an overview for those charged with transforming science content and processes into a classroom curriculum. In other words, while written from the scholarly perspective of curriculum studies, the hope is that it will be seen by teachers as a set of possibilities rather than recommendations while reminding educators that what happens in classrooms to students and their parents is the curriculum, but it is only one …

Water Potential From Adaptive Force Matching For Ice And Liquid With Revised Dispersion Predicts Supercooled Liquid Anomalies In Good Agreement With Two Independent Experimental Fits, Raymond Weldon, Feng Wang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

A revised version of the Water potential from Adaptive force matching for Ice and Liquid (WAIL) was developed by using the previous data set for fitting the WAIL model but with a dispersion term calculated using symmetry adapted perturbation theory (SAPT). The model has no adjustable parameters and relies solely on fitting first-principles information. The new model, named revised WAIL (rWAIL), shows improved predictions of most properties of water when compared to the previously published WAIL model. The rWAIL model also compares favorably to other first-principles-derived water models, such as MB-Pol, at only a fraction of the computational cost. The …

An Examination Of Thematic Research, Development, And Trends In Remote Sensing Applied To Conservation Agriculture, Zobaer Ahmed, Aaron Shew, Lawton Nalley, Michael Popp, V. Steven Green, Kristofor Brye

Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies Publications and Presentations

Conservation agriculture seeks to reduce environmental degradation through sustainable management of agricultural land. Since the 1990s, agricultural research has been conducted using remote sensing technologies; however, few previous reviews have been conducted focused on different conservation management practices. Most of the previous literature has focused on the application of remote sensing in agriculture without focusing exclusively on conservation practices, with some only providing a narrative review, others using biophysical remote sensing for quantitative estimates of the bio-geo-chemical-physical properties of soils and crops, and few others focused on single agricultural management practices. This paper used the preferred reporting items for systematic …

A recent study published data on the growth performance, relative weights of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract, liver histology, serum biochemistry, and hematological parameters for turkey poults fed an experimental diet contaminated with aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and humic acids (HA) extracted from vermicompost. The negative effects of AFB1 (250 ng AFB1/g of feed) were significantly reduced by HA supplementation (0.25% w/w), suggesting that HA might be utilized to ameliorate the negative impact of AFB1 from contaminated diets. The present study shows the results of the remaining variables, as an extension of …

Quantifying Wildfire Drivers And Predictability In Boreal Peatlands Using A Two-Step Error-Correcting Machine Learning Framework In Tefire V1.0, Rongyun Tang, Mingzhou Jin, Daniel M. Ricciuto, Anping Chen, Yulong Zhang

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wildfires are becoming an increasing challenge to the sustainability of boreal peatland (BP) ecosystems and can alter the stability of boreal carbon storage. However, predicting the occurrence of rare and extreme BP fires proves to be challenging, and gaining a quantitative understanding of the factors, both natural and anthropogenic, inducing BP fires remains elusive. Here, we quantified the predictability of BP fires and their primary controlling factors from 1997 to 2015 using a two-step correcting machine learning (ML) framework that combines multiple ML classifiers, regression models, and an error-correcting technique. We found that (1) the adopted oversampling algorithm effectively addressed …

Generative Mechanisms Of Ai Implementation: A Critical Realist Perspective On Predictive Maintenance, Alexander Stohr, Philip Ollig, Robert Keller, Alexander Rieger

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Artificial intelligence (AI) promises various new opportunities to create and appropriate business value. However, many organizations – especially those in more traditional industries – struggle to seize these opportunities. To unpack the underlying reasons, we investigate how more traditional industries implement predictive maintenance, a promising application of AI in manufacturing organizations. For our analysis, we employ a multiple-case design and adopt a critical realist perspective to identify generative mechanisms of AI implementation. Overall, we find five interdependent mechanisms: experimentation; knowledge building and integration; data; anxiety; and inspiration. Using causal loop diagramming, we flesh out the socio-technical dynamics of these mechanisms …

Experimental Characterization Of A Fully Polarimetric Pulsed Terahertz Spectroscopy System, Nikita Gurjar, Morgan E. Ware, Magda El-Shenawee

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

A terahertz time domain pulsed spectroscopy system is modified to provide fully polarimetric radiation and analysis. The operation of this polarimetry system is characterized using a birefringent, x-cut quartz crystal. The modification is based on rotating the photoconductive antennas such that both the emitted and detected polarizations are out of the plane of incidence. Subsequently, broadband wire grid polarizers are used to select the incident and detected direction of linear polarization to be either parallel with (vertical) or perpendicular to (horizontal) the plane of incidence with the sample surface. The experiments are conducted in both transmission and reflection. Depending on …

Using The Federal Reserve’S Balance Sheet To Predict Macroeconomic Outcomes, Michael J. Crawley Feb 2024

Using The Federal Reserve’S Balance Sheet To Predict Macroeconomic Outcomes, Michael J. Crawley

Accounting Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study investigates whether the U.S. Federal Reserve’s balance sheet can be used to predict macroeconomic outcomes. The Federal Reserve writes its own accounting standards, and I recast portions of the Federal Reserve’s weekly balance sheet as if it more closely followed Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Specifically, I estimate the fair value of the Federal Reserve’s U.S. Treasury notes and bonds and calculate the associated unrealized gains and losses. I demonstrate that unrealized gains (losses) on the Federal Reserve’s U.S. Treasury notes and bonds are associated with lower (higher) one-quarter ahead inflation and real gross domestic product growth. Additionally, I …

Vaccine Immunogenicity Versus Gastrointestinal Microbiome Status: Implications For Poultry Production, Chrysta N. Beck, Jiangchao Zhao, Gisela F. Erf Feb 2024

Vaccine Immunogenicity Versus Gastrointestinal Microbiome Status: Implications For Poultry Production, Chrysta N. Beck, Jiangchao Zhao, Gisela F. Erf

Poultry Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

At the turn of the 21st century, the importance of maintaining a balanced microbiome was brought to the forefront of the microbiology, immunology, and physiology research fields. Exploring the complex interactions between vaccine administration, mucosal microbiome, oral tolerance, and enteric inflammation in health and disease is challenging since environmental factors (such as diet and sanitation) have major influences on gut microbiota composition. High enteric pathogen load has been shown to contribute to dampened cell-mediated and humoral immune responses to vaccines in human case studies, either through elevated enteric inflammation or increased tolerance to environmental microbes. Although antibiotic and probiotic interventions …

Characterizing Catalyst Function And Transformations In The Plasma Reduction Of Co2 On Atomic Layer Deposition-Synthesized Catalysts, Samuel Keith Conlin, Hamed Mehrabi, David Parette, Eva M. Nichols, Robert H. Coridan Feb 2024

Characterizing Catalyst Function And Transformations In The Plasma Reduction Of Co2 On Atomic Layer Deposition-Synthesized Catalysts, Samuel Keith Conlin, Hamed Mehrabi, David Parette, Eva M. Nichols, Robert H. Coridan

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The enhancement of CO2 reduction in atmospheric-pressure, non-thermal plasma has been shown using a variety of catalyst systems with ranging composition, particle sizes, and morphologies. Improvements in CO2 conversion can be attained by choice of catalyst material. However, inhomogeneity in the material distribution arising from the synthesis affects the catalytically active surface area and dielectric environment that modulates the plasma properties near the catalyst. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) can be used to control the composition of ultra-thin layers on support materials. We used ALD to synthesize metal oxide catalyst coatings on high surface area supports. We found that …

Roberts, Jonathan Brye, Michelle Evans-White, Christopher G. Henry, Daniel J. Lessner, Chandler Arel

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Phosphorus (P) fertilizers with low water solubility, like struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O), have been identified to possibly reduce nutrient losses in furrow-irrigated cropping systems. However, there is a lack of research on the impacts of P and nitrogen (N) fertilization on greenhouse gas [GHG; i.e., methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2)] production in furrow-irrigated rice (Oryza sativa). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of electrochemically precipitated struvite (ECST), chemically precipitated struvite (CPST), triple superphosphate (TSP), diammonium phosphate (DAP), environmentally smart nitrogen …

Computational Discovery Of Microstructured Composites With Optimal Stiffness-Toughness Trade-Offs, Beichen Li, Bolei Deng, Wan Shou, Tae-Hyun Oh, Yuanming Hu, Yiyue Luo, Liang Shi, Wojciech Matusik

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The conflict between stiffness and toughness is a fundamental problem in engineering materials design. However, the systematic discovery of microstructured composites with optimal stiffness-toughness trade-offs has never been demonstrated, hindered by the discrepancies between simulation and reality and the lack of data-efficient exploration of the entire Pareto front. We introduce a generalizable pipeline that integrates physical experiments, numerical simulations, and artificial neural networks to address both challenges. Without any prescribed expert knowledge of material design, our approach implements a nested-loop proposal-validation workflow to bridge the simulation-to-reality gap and find microstructured composites that are stiff and tough with high sample efficiency. …

Cathodoluminescence And Tip-Plasmon Resonance Of Bi2te3 Triangular Nanostructures, Qigeng Yan, Siyuan Wang, Kuiwen Guan, Xiaojin Guan, Lei He

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bi2Te3, as a topological insulator, is able to support plasmonic emission in the visible spectral range. Thin Bi2Te3 flakes can be exfoliated directly from a Bi2Te3 crystal, and the shape of Bi2Te3 flakes can be further modified by focused ion beam milling. Therefore, we have designed a Bi2Te3 triangular antenna with distinct tip angles for the application of plasmonic resonance. The plasmonic emission of the Bi2Te3 triangular antenna is excited and investigated by cathodoluminescence in the scanning electron microscope. Enhanced tip …

Self-Consistent Phonon Calculations And Quartic Anharmonic Lattice Thermal Conductivity In 2d Ins Monolayer, Eesha Andharia, Hind Alqurashi, Abhiyan Pandit, Bothina Hamad

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Low lattice thermal conductivity (κl) is a crucial factor for higher figure-of merit and hence the efficiency of thermoelectric generators. There are several reports on intrinsically low κl values in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials using density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations. In general, phonon dispersions are studied at absolute zero temperature using the finite-displacement approach within harmonic approximations. In addition, the κl is calculated using the third-order cubic interatomic force constants (IFCs) by solving the Boltzmann transport equation for phonons. In these calculations, we use quartic IFCs to solve self-consistent phonon equations …

Long-term continuous deposits and well-preserved thick loess sections are natural archives for the reconstruction of global climate change. However, the loess sections are often discontinuous owing to soil erosions and accumulations. This study aimed at reconstructing long-term continuous paleoclimatic records by integrating the target sections of two typical loess sequences in northeast (NE) China. One section, the Dajiugang (DJG) section, was investigated and sampled, and the Sanbahuo (SBH) section was used as the target for integrating and reconstructing the paleoclimate. Sedimentary, pedogenesis, and luminescence dating analyses were conducted to analyze the potentials for reconstructing the paleoclimate by integrating two typical …

Grand Challenges In Membrane Transport, Modeling And Simulation, Jacob Monroe, Chidambaram Thamariselvan, Ranil Wickramasinghe

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Today, membranes play an increasing role in separation processes across a wide range of industries, including water treatment, biomedical applications, bioseparations, and gas separations (Yeom et al., 2022). Numerous different membrane types exist, which can be broadly categorized as either porous or non-porous, where pores may be or may not be filled with a separate phase from the bulk solvent and membrane phases. In addition, various driving forces exist - pressure, concentration, electric field, etc.—that lead to transport across the membrane. For a porous membrane, solute transport is usually governed by convective flow through the pores. Micron-sized pores are used …

Army installation commanders need timely weather information to make installation closure decisions before or during adverse weather events (e.g., hail, thunderstorms, snow, and floods). We worked with the military installation in Fort Carson, CO, and used their Weather Warning, Watch, and Advisory (WWA) criteria list to establish the foundation for our algorithm. We divided the Colorado Springs area into 2300 grids (2.5 square kilometers areas) and grouped the grids into ten microclimates, geographically and meteorologically unique regions, per pre-defined microclimate regions provided by the Fort Carson Air Force Staff Weather Officers (SWOs). Our algorithm classifies each weather event in the …

Survey Of Memory Consolidation Techniques For Video Question Answering, Matthew Couts, Pha Nguyen, Khoa Luu

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Video Question Answering (VideoQA) is a field of research focused on developing models that can engage in natural conversations with humans about the content of videos. Currently, the most successful approaches involve analyzing videos frame-by-frame, which is computationally and memory-intensive. To imitate human memory, the Atkinson-Shiffrin memory model can formulate the machine’s video understanding capability through Vision-Language Models. Reducing the number of frames processed by the model is a crucial operation in this approach category and can be handled by a memory consolidation algorithm. The memory consolidation algorithm should be able to determine the keyframes to transfer from short-term to …
