B.R. Wells Rice Research Studies 2002, R. J. Norman, J.-F. Meullenet

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Arkansas is the leading rice producing state in the U .S .. representing almost 46% of the total U .S. production and almost 47% of the total acres planted to rice . Rice cultural practices vary across the state and across the U.S. However, due to changing political, environmental, and economic times, the practices arc dynamic. This survey was initiated in 2002 to monitor how the changing times reflect the changes in the way Arkansas rice producers approach their livelihood. The survey was conducted by polling county Extension agents in each of the counties in Arkansas that produce rice. Questions …

Bioassessment Of The West Fork Of The White River, Northwest Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, Andrea J. Radwell, Robin A. Reese Jun 2003

Bioassessment Of The West Fork Of The White River, Northwest Arkansas, Arthur V. Brown, Andrea J. Radwell, Robin A. Reese

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The West Fork-White River has been and continues to be an important water resource for northwest Arkansas. It is used recreationally for fishing and swimming, agriculturally as a source of water for livestock and irrigation of crops, it is mined for gravel, used as a receiving stream for municipal wastewater effluent, and contributes to Beaver Lake which provides water for treatment and distribution to most of northwest Arkansas. While these uses have benefited a large segment of the Arkansas population, they have also contributed to the decline in environmental quality of the river. To facilitate the development of appropriate management …

A Free Trade Agreement Of The America's: A Case Study Of Brazil, Maria Eliana Cadario

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper will examine the likely impacts of the proposed Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) that was initiated by President Bush in 1994 and is anticipated to include 34 countries in the Western Hemisphere excluding Cuba and to come into force during 2005. The paper will focus on the likely trade effects for Brazil, the largest potential member of the FTAA. In the first part, I will review the current trade relations between countries in the Western Hemisphere and the US, including the various bilateral and multilateral agreements such as NAFTA, MERCOSUR, CBI, The Andean Trade Preference Act, …

Dar Islam Mosque, Albuquerque, New Mexico Studio Design Project, Melissa Harlan Jan 2003

Dar Islam Mosque, Albuquerque, New Mexico Studio Design Project, Melissa Harlan

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

In historically Muslim countries, mosques take the prescribed form of a large hall with adjacent courtyard, minaret(s), and ornately decorated entrance portal. With Islam's spread to the United States, the mosque no longer takes this form, due to construction and technological conventions, as well as the diminished economic will of the religious community. The design for the Dar Islam Mosque in Albuquerque, New Mexico takes a position of difference in response to the current debate in the Muslim community over historicism versus contextualism of mosques, where the individual's response to the space is primary, with emphasis placed on disconnecting from …

Dna Sequence Of Melanocortin 1-Receptor Gene In Coturnix Japonica: Correlation With Three E Locus Alleles, E, E+, Erh, Rupali B. Ugrankar Jan 2003

Dna Sequence Of Melanocortin 1-Receptor Gene In Coturnix Japonica: Correlation With Three E Locus Alleles, E, E+, Erh, Rupali B. Ugrankar

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The melanocortin 1-receptor (MC1-R) gene plays a key role in the expression of fur and feather color in mammals and birds by regulating the distribution of two melanin pigments: eumelanin (black/brown) and pheomelanin (red/yellow). MC1-R corresponds to the classical Extension (E) locus in mice, pigs, dogs, horses, and chickens. Three E locus alleles, the wild-type (e + ), brown (E), and redhead (e rh) have been identified in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). To determine if the quail E locus phenotypes were due to variation in the MC1-R gene, the coding region of the MC1-R gene was PCR amplified and DNA …

Subterranean Biodiversity Of Arkansas, Part 1: Bioinventory And Bioassessment Of Caves In The Sylamore Ranger District, Ozark National Forest, Arkansas, G. O. Graening, Michael E. Slay, Karen K. Tinkle Jan 2003

Subterranean Biodiversity Of Arkansas, Part 1: Bioinventory And Bioassessment Of Caves In The Sylamore Ranger District, Ozark National Forest, Arkansas, G. O. Graening, Michael E. Slay, Karen K. Tinkle

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Inventory and assessment of subterranean ecosystems of the Sylamore Ranger District (within Baxter, Marion, Searcy, and Stone counties) Ozark National Forest, was performed 2000 to 2002. The Sylamore District, completely underlaid in karst topography (occurring in Mississippian to Ordovician carbonates), contains approximately 10% of the known caves in Arkansas. Thirty-five sites were inventoried, six of which were sampled for environmental quality. These were combined and analyzed with previous studies, creating a database of 1,238 total species occurrences, 230 species, and 61 total sites. Most common were cave crickets, pipistrelle bats, woodrats, mosquitoes, and spiders. Fourteen species obligate to coves or …

Dragonflies (Odonata) Of The Ouachita National Forest, George L. Harp, Phoebe A. Harp Jan 2003

Dragonflies (Odonata) Of The Ouachita National Forest, George L. Harp, Phoebe A. Harp

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Ouachita National Forest (ONF) was established in 1907 and encompasses 1.8 million acres (728,450 ha) in Arkansas and Oklahoma, almost entirely within the Ouachita Mountains Natural Division. The adult dragonfly species richness, seasonal and spatial distribution, and relative abundance were surveyed during 2002. Fifty-four collections were made at 43 sites during 10-19 May (20 collections), 10-22 July (19 collections) and 9-17 September (15 collections). Literature records were searched, as well as records from pertinent museums and individuals. Eighty-three species are reported here for the ONF, 77 of which were collected during 2002. Nehallenia integricollis newly reported for Arkansas, as …

Experimental Channel Catfish Virus Infection Mimics Natural Infection Of Channel Catfish, Robin L. Stingley, Wayne L. Gray, Billy R. Griffin, Reid Landes Jan 2003

Experimental Channel Catfish Virus Infection Mimics Natural Infection Of Channel Catfish, Robin L. Stingley, Wayne L. Gray, Billy R. Griffin, Reid Landes

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Channel catfish virus (CCV) causes a severe hemorrhagic disease in channel catfish fry and fingerlings. CCV epizootics are associated with elevated water temperatures and high mortality rates. Survivors of acute disease are latently infected with i virus. In this study, we investigated conditions effecting CCV pathogenesis and latency utilizing an experimental immersion model to simulate natural infection and a population of Arkansas catfish verified to have no prior CCV exposure, the results indicate that the Auburn- 1 laboratory strain is comparable to CCV field isolates in virulence and ability to establish latent infection. The study confirms that water temperature and …
