B. R. Wells Rice Research Studies 2003, R. J. Norman, J.-F. Meullenet, K. A.K. Moldenhauer

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Arkansas is the leading rice-producing state in the U.S., representing just over 48% of the total U.S. production and 48.5% of the total acres planted to rice. Rice cultural practices vary across the state and across the U.S. However, due to changing political, environmental, and economic times, the practices are dynamic. This survey was initiated in 2002 to monitor how the changing times reflect the changes in the way Arkansas rice producers approach their livelihood. The survey was conducted by polling county extension agents in each of the counties in Arkansas where rice is produced. Questions included topics such as …

Instructor On Demand: Can Online Delivery Of Lectures Promote Learning Achievement?, Rebecca Ann Martindale Aug 2004

Instructor On Demand: Can Online Delivery Of Lectures Promote Learning Achievement?, Rebecca Ann Martindale

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Reported enrollments of students taking online courses in institutes of higher learning in the 2000-01 academic years were estimated at 3.077 million, according to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES). Dramatic enrollment increases have led to a need for research that involves both the comparison of learning achievement based on delivery mediums, and student attitudes concerning alternative delivery methods. This study compared the learning achievement of students when the deliveries of course lectures were presented both in-class and online, as well as measured attitudes of students concerning delivery mediums. Both types of lectures were presented …

Evaluation Of Small Grain Forage Crops And Cultivars Of Soft Red Winter Wheat For Stocker Cattle, L. B. Daniels, K. F. Harrison, D. S. Hubbell Iii, E. B. Kegley, D. Hellwig, Z. B. Johnson

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Use of small grain forage crops for stocker cattle production was extensively evaluated in two separate three-year research projects at the Livestock and Forestry Branch Research Station near Batesville, Ark. The first section of this Research Report presents results of a study in which 216 commercial crossbred steers (Avg. body weights 463 lb) grazed forage of wheat, oats, rye, ryegrass, wheat + rye, wheat + ryegrass, rye + ryegrass, and wheat + rye + ryegrass during the winter and spring months from 1999 through 2002. Grazing of these forages during the winter and spring provides excellent gains in stocker cattle …

Intra-Vascular Administration Of Particles To Induce Pulmonary Hypertension, Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome, And Ascites In Animals, Gisela F. Erf, Robert F. Wideman Jr., Howard L. French Apr 2004

Intra-Vascular Administration Of Particles To Induce Pulmonary Hypertension, Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome, And Ascites In Animals, Gisela F. Erf, Robert F. Wideman Jr., Howard L. French

Patents Granted

The invention relates to a new process for inducing pulmonary hypertension (elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries) in animals, with the objective of identifying and/or eliminating susceptible individuals or families to achieve genetic improvement in agriculturally important breeds of poultry (broiler chickens and turkeys), and cattle. The invention will also be useful for animal research directed toward understanding pulmonary hypertension and its sequelae in human patients as well as in animals. Sustained pulmonary hypertension leads to pulmonary hypertension syndrome, which adversely impacts poultry production throughout the world, as well as cattle production when cattle are kept at latitudes sufficiently …

Wayne E. Sabbe Arkansas Soil Fertility Studies 2003, Nathan A. Slaton

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Rapid technological changes in crop management and production require that the research efforts also be presented in an expeditious manner. The contributions of soil fertility and fertilizers are major production factors in all Arkansas crops. The studies contained within will allow producers to compare their practices with the university's research efforts. Additionally, soil test data and fertilizer sales are presented to allow comparisons among years, crops, and other areas within Arkansas.

Toward An Understanding Of Norwegian Dwelling, Amber R. Murray Jan 2004

Toward An Understanding Of Norwegian Dwelling, Amber R. Murray

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Neither traditional nor modern Norwegian artifacts have received significant critical attention or appreciation in mainstream histories of we stem art or architecture. This lack of cultural exportation has to do with the fact that surveys of art and architecture history, as well as close studies of the modern period, have tended to focus on canonical works, and, often as a result, the artifacts of Norway have been excluded from this mainstream history. In response to this paucity of scholarship, this study investigates the intersections between Norway's art and culture through a synthesis of phenomenal readings of the country's built landscape …

A Survey Into The Prevalence Of Parasitic Helminths In Boiler Breeders, Anita Sarathi Jan 2004

A Survey Into The Prevalence Of Parasitic Helminths In Boiler Breeders, Anita Sarathi

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of helminth infections in spent broiler breeders. Intestinal tracts from 10 birds from each of five farms were obtained and examined for parasite identification and quantification. Heterakis gallinarum infections were the most common, followed in order of decreasing incidence by Capillaria obsignata, Ascaridia galli and Raillietina cesticillus. Peak worm burdens for individual birds were 121 (A. galli), 535 (H. gallinarum), 2I5 (C. obsignata) and 125 ( R. cesticillus). Significant farm-to-farm variation in worm burdens was observed.

Western Kingbird (Tyrannus Verticalis): Recently Established Breeding Bird In Arkansas, Elizabeth Ellis, Ragupathy Kannan

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Western Kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis) has nested for six consecutive years in Arkansas since 1998. Eleven nests of this species were observed in the summer of 2003 in urban areas of Fort Smith (Sebastian Co.) and Van Buren (Crawford Co.). All nests were on human-made structures. Of the 11, seven (64%) were located on power stations and the remaining four (36%) were on light posts. Mean nest height was 7.92 m (n = 11nests) and the mean width of nest poles was 31.18 cm (n= 4). Nest building lasted 12 to 13 days (mean = 12.5 days, n = 2 …
