The Forgotten Minority: A Cross-Sectional And Time-Series Analysis Of American Indian/Alaska Native Child Abuse And Neglect, 1993-2003, Linda Kaye Ketcher Aug 2008

The Forgotten Minority: A Cross-Sectional And Time-Series Analysis Of American Indian/Alaska Native Child Abuse And Neglect, 1993-2003, Linda Kaye Ketcher

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Very little empirical research has been conducted on child abuse among American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN). This dissertation examines the rate of reported AI/AN child abuse from 1993-2003 for the 20 U. S. states with the largest percentages of AI/AN populations. Research on child abuse and neglect from at least two bodies of literature is examined - one on child abuse in the general population and the other on child abuse among American Indians/Alaskan Natives. Based on SAS output from pooled time series analysis, two tables were created, one for the general population and one for the AI/AN population. The results …

Microwave Dielectroscopy Of Breast Tissue Phantoms In The 5.8-40 Ghz Range, Binh Tran Aug 2008

Microwave Dielectroscopy Of Breast Tissue Phantoms In The 5.8-40 Ghz Range, Binh Tran

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Based on the high contrast in dielectric properties between the low-water-contain sample and the high-water-content one, we can determine whether the tissue sample is cancerous or normal. In order to make the measurement repeatable and convenient, some phantom materials, which have the same dielectric properties of human tissues, have been prepared. These phantom tissues are made from gelatin, water with honey syrup and Sodium Chloride (NaCl). In this project, we are going to measure and compare the dielectric properties of different types of phantom tissues by using focused beam antennas. The purpose of this project is to perform a systematic …

Visualization Of An Approach To Data Clustering, Marisabel Guevara May 2008

Visualization Of An Approach To Data Clustering, Marisabel Guevara

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Using visualization and clustering goals as guidelines, this thesis explores a graphic implementation of a data clustering technique that repositions vertices by applying physical laws of charges and springs to the components of the graph. The resulting visualizations are evidence of the success of the approach as well as of the data sets that lend themselves to a clustering routine. Due to the visual product of the implementation, the algorithm is most useful as an aid in understanding the grouping pattern of a data set. Either for a rapid analysis or to assist in presentation, the visual result of the …

Conversion Of Biomass Resource To Useful Forms Of Energy And Other Products, Steven Jennings May 2008

Conversion Of Biomass Resource To Useful Forms Of Energy And Other Products, Steven Jennings

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The United States is facing increasing pressure to find renewable energy sources due to rising energy costs. With world energy demand at an all time high, renewable energy has been thrust into the forefront of research as a means to mitigate this looming crisis. Throughout the United States, there is a large quantity of agricultural biomass that could be used to generate energy and lessen the dependence on diminishing resources. Specifically, animal feeding operations (AFOs) such as dairies generate large amounts of cow manure, which, when improperly handled, causes both air and water pollution. Currently, most manure is temporarily stockpiled …

Kinetics Determination Of Soybean Oil Transesterification In The Design Of A Continuous Biodiesel Production Process, Irwin Jacob, Ed Clausen, Danielle Julie Carrier May 2008

Kinetics Determination Of Soybean Oil Transesterification In The Design Of A Continuous Biodiesel Production Process, Irwin Jacob, Ed Clausen, Danielle Julie Carrier

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

One-step batch transesterification consisting of three stepwise reversible reactions of pure soybean oil with methanol was conducted at two different mixing speeds (600 and 300 rpm) to produce soybean oil fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel). In both batch reactions, sodium methoxide (1.09 wt% based on soybean oil) was used as the catalyst, the reaction temperature was 60oC, and the methanol-to-oil molar ratio was 6:1. The objectives were to determine and/or investigate: 1) the mechanism and order of the reaction, 2) the reaction rate constants, 3) the effect of changes in mixing intensity on the reaction rate, 4) the comparison of …

Jumping On The Next Bandwagon: An Overview Of The Policy And Legal Aspects Of The Local Food Movement, Marne Coit May 2008

Jumping On The Next Bandwagon: An Overview Of The Policy And Legal Aspects Of The Local Food Movement, Marne Coit

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This article is an exploration of this new and growing local food movement. It is not a cohesive movement, nor is it one that is organized by a particular group. Rather, it is a grassroots movement comprised of people who are interested, for various reasons, in obtaining food grown or produced where they live or in producing this food themselves. The purpose of this article is to explore what the local food movement is, why consumers are interested in basing their food purchasing choices on where their food originates, current and future regulation of local food, and where this movement …

Dangerous Interpretations Of The Precautionary Principle And The Foundational Values Of European Union Food Law: Risk Versus Risk, Miguel A. Recuerda May 2008

Dangerous Interpretations Of The Precautionary Principle And The Foundational Values Of European Union Food Law: Risk Versus Risk, Miguel A. Recuerda

Journal of Food Law & Policy

In their ordinary lives, many people try to avoid any situation involving risk that could cause themselves harm. On the other hand, others assume risk with greater facility because they are not sufficiently aware of it, or because they know that the probability of resulting damage is very low. Overwhelming worry in the face of any kind of risk would be paralyzing (we would not leave the house, eat in any restaurant outside of our home, drive, or fly). On the contrary, an attitude absolutely heedless of risks would end up causing innumerable damages, some of them irreparable. Common sense …

United States Food Law Update: Food Safely Planning, Attribute Labeling, And The Irradiation Debate, Bryan Endres May 2008

United States Food Law Update: Food Safely Planning, Attribute Labeling, And The Irradiation Debate, Bryan Endres

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This article summarizes significant changes and developments in food law throughout the second half of 2007. The previous edition of the Food Law Update noted the recent increase in imported food and the resulting stress placed on food safety agencies and customs officials. Detailed inspections of every food shipment entering the United States would quickly exhaust limited agency resources and cripple efficient international trade of food products. On the other hand, after several well-publicized food scares and the ongoing threat of international contamination, the public increasingly demands high levels of physical surveillance. As a part of this ongoing discussion, this …

European Union Food Law Update, Emilie H. Leibovitch May 2008

European Union Food Law Update, Emilie H. Leibovitch

Journal of Food Law & Policy

The following European Union Food Law Update will address significant changes in European Union (EU) food law that occurred between 2006 and early 2008. The update will be different from the previous ones, as it will instead be organized by the subject areas addressed by the developments. The published regulations, proposals, cases, and other relevant news will thus be incorporated under their corresponding topic headings.

Wayne E. Sabbe Arkansas Soil Fertility Studies 2007, Nathan A. Slaton Apr 2008

Wayne E. Sabbe Arkansas Soil Fertility Studies 2007, Nathan A. Slaton

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

Rapid technological changes in crop management and production require that the research efforts also be presented in an expeditious manner. The contributions of soil fertility and fertilizers are major production factors in all Arkansas crops. The studies described within will allow producers to compare their practices with the university’s research efforts. Additionally, soil test data and fertilizer sales are presented to allow comparisons among years, crops, and other areas within Arkansas.
