Identifying Microbial Complexities And Control Strategies At Pre-Harvest Poultry Production, Tolulope Tiwa Ogundipe
Identifying Microbial Complexities And Control Strategies At Pre-Harvest Poultry Production, Tolulope Tiwa Ogundipe
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While significant progress has been made in post-harvest control of Salmonella in the poultry industry, the development of effective pre-harvest intervention strategies remains critical for reducing foodborne pathogens. Environmental reservoirs such as poultry litter and drinking water systems (DWS) are potential harborage sites for Salmonella and other microbial communities. Understanding the microbiota of these environments, including biofilms within water lines, is essential to identifying factors contributing to Salmonella colonization and improving pre-harvest control approaches. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and quantity of Salmonella in poultry litter and water lines, characterize the microbial populations in these environments, and assess …
In Vitro Investigation Of Macrophage Functional And Metabolic Modulation, Shelby Nicole Bess
In Vitro Investigation Of Macrophage Functional And Metabolic Modulation, Shelby Nicole Bess
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Macrophages are a subset of immune cells with a variety of functions that are abundant in numerous tumor types such as colorectal and breast cancer. It has been suggested that macrophages may serve an important function as immune mediators in tumor behavior; however, macrophage activity is complex and remains not completely understood. The overall goal of this dissertation was to explore and exploit tumor-associated macrophage phagocytic function and the changes in their interactions with cancer cells in an in vitro mouse model and in 2D and 3D in vitro culture models. First, we wanted to better understand macrophage behavior under …
Evaluation Of Fluridone In Rice, Maria Carolina De Carvalho Rocha Souza
Evaluation Of Fluridone In Rice, Maria Carolina De Carvalho Rocha Souza
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The increasing pressure of Palmer amaranth [Amaranthus palmeri (S.) Watson] in rice (Oryza sativa L.) fields demands new chemical control options to manage this weed. The recent labeling of fluridone on this crop from the three-leaf rice stage offers an additional residual herbicide for battling Palmer amaranth; however, research is needed to evaluate its effectiveness and rice tolerance. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate Palmer amaranth control and rice tolerance to fluridone across different locations in Arkansas in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Preemergence (PRE) applications of fluridone at 168 g ai ha⁻1; (1× label rate) and 336 …
Space And Subjectivity In The Emerging American West, Scott Hendry
Space And Subjectivity In The Emerging American West, Scott Hendry
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The American West resists theoretical definition. As myth, ideal, region, contact zone, place, space, symbol, territory, home, assemblage, dream, and home, the West is continually changing. As a region, the West is not a closed space; it is an open, ongoing constellation of processes, an unfolding simultaneity of storied events or happenings. This dissertation, “Space and Subjectivity in the Emerging American West,” explores literature and cinema of the modern West. My project seeks to answer the question “What is the American West?” by examining the work of novelists, poets, filmmakers, cultural geographers, philosophers, and photographers who reimagine identity, locality, and …

Crispr-Cas9 Integration Of Salmon Elovl2 In Zebrafish Enhances Lc-Pufa Biosynthesis And Growth Across Diets, Waleed Sami J. Al-Bachry
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fish are a rich source of EPA and DHA, which are well-known long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs). The sustainable production of these essential fatty acids poses significant challenges, mainly due to our dependence on marine fish and certain nuts. CRISPR-Cas system was utilized to insert the elongation of long-chain fatty acids-like2 (Elovl2) gene from Salmo salar into Danio rerio. Elovl2 was introduced at 10-15-minute post-fertilization, and successful integration confirmed by PCR genotyping, sequencing and expression of EGFP. Approximately 67% of injected embryos successfully exhibited EGFP and sequence results verified the gene integration of Salmo salar Elovl2 at the first start …
Variation In Stress Response Regulation Across Natural Isolates Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Crystal Christine Crook
Variation In Stress Response Regulation Across Natural Isolates Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Crystal Christine Crook
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The stress response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a valuable area of study for understanding cellular adaptation mechanisms that govern survival in fluctuating environments. This dissertation investigates stress response regulation in yeast through the roles of Hog1 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and the post-transcriptional regulator Mkt1, a key post-transcriptional regulator, in diverse wild yeast isolates. Hog1 is traditionally known for its central role in osmotic stress regulation in the high-osmolarity glycerol (HOG) pathway. This study expands the functional scope of Hog1 to include oxidative and ethanol-induced stress responses.
In parallel, we investigate post-transcriptional regulation of stress responses by the Mkt1 interactome, …
Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination Protocols Using Pre-Synchronization In Suckled Beef Cows, Wyatt Eugene Weber
Fixed-Time Artificial Insemination Protocols Using Pre-Synchronization In Suckled Beef Cows, Wyatt Eugene Weber
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Adoption of artificial insemination by beef producers has been limited within the United States. Estrous synchronization (ES) for fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) has been one of the most effective ways to implement artificial insemination into beef production systems, but its efficiency has primarily been restrained by the dependency on the effectiveness of the initial gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) injection in many FTAI protocols. The hypotheses of these studies were to determine practical methods of pre-synchronization to improve current FTAI protocols, ultimately increasing beef herd reproductive performance. The objective was to evaluate the use of prostaglandin F2α (PGF) and progesterone (P4) …
Real Time Adaptive Control Of A Pid Via Genetic Algorithm Machine Learning Systems, Cemre Tas
Real Time Adaptive Control Of A Pid Via Genetic Algorithm Machine Learning Systems, Cemre Tas
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The most common control method that is utilized by all industries across the world is the proportional-integrative-derivative controller (PID) due the relatively low cost and complexity of the system. However, there are draw-backs with PIDs, it is not adaptative to a changing system, so it works on nominal systems, and it starts breaking down when a system begins to have a non-linear response. The method chosen to overcome both is the utilization of machine learning with the use of genetic algorithms.
This method allows any PID system to be capable of adapting in real-time, while not adding significant additional cost …
Evolutionarily Conserved Functions Of The Gene Frazzled In Midline Axon Guidance In Drosophila Melanogaster And Tribolium Castaneum., Piyasi Ghosh
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Axon guidance in bilaterians is often controlled by various signaling pathways in the nervous system, which determine the fate of the axons if they cross the midline or not. One such pathway involved is the ligand-receptor pair Netrin (Net) and Frazzled (Fra), which is also known as the attractive pathway that promotes midline crossing axons in insects and other bilaterians. Orthologs of the pathway ligand Netrins and their receptors Frazzled [Fra] in insects and Deleted in Colorectal cancer [DCC] in vertebrates are widely conserved in bilaterians. How well these regulatory roles of the protein are conserved is poorly understood. In …

The Efficacy Of Foam-Based Hand Sanitizers For The Control Of Enveloped And Non-Enveloped Virus Transmission, Francis Torko
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Infectious disease transmission due to viruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), influenza virus, human noroviruses (HuNoV), and hepatitis A, can occur via person-to-person contact or contaminated surfaces. Effective hand hygiene, including hand washing and use of hand sanitizers, is considered a critical tool for the control of infectious disease transmission, as recommended by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization. However, while research on hand washing efficacy is well-documented, research on hand sanitizer efficacy, particularly for foam-based products, remains limited. This research addressed critical gaps in the area of …

Bacterial Chondronecrosis With Osteomyelitis In Broiler Chickens: Experimental Lameness And Additive Probiotic Treatments, Amanda Anthney
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the global population already surpassing 8.2 billion and expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, the poultry industry has seen a surge in demand due to its unmatched efficiency and affordability for consumers across the globe. Selective breeding and quality nutrition developments since the industry's commercialization have allowed producers to grow broilers up to 7 pounds by market age. While this extraordinarily efficient process has allowed quality poultry products to be available worldwide, the modern-day broiler has developed a multitude of musculoskeletal issues. Due to the lack of integral skeletal development to match the rapid production of muscle tissue, …

Characterization Of Streptococcus Gallolyticus: An Emerging Pathogen Causing Turkey Streptococcosis, Latasha S. Gray
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
During the past five years, there has been an increased occurrence of Streptococcus gallolyticus in young turkey poults. This emerging pathogen previously affected turkey flocks without any indication of disease prior to acute mortality. However, recently there has been two cases of neurological presentation associated with S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus that are unique to traditional disease presentation in turkey poults. The objectives of the present dissertation were to compile data associated with the two neurological cases and compare different S. gallolyticus strains as well as pathogenic Enterococcus cecorum to the neurological strains. The two neurological cases occurred between July and …
Fish Cultivation In Fallow Season Rice Fields: Effects On Landscape Methane Emissions, Samuel Carroll
Fish Cultivation In Fallow Season Rice Fields: Effects On Landscape Methane Emissions, Samuel Carroll
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Co-cultivation of aquatic animals and rice in the same field is a fairly common practice in various parts of the world, with a number of well-established agro-ecological benefits, such as decreasing the need for chemical pesticides and fertilizers, increasing soil organic matter, and reducing the land area needed for agricultural production. One area of environmental concern in rice production is greenhouse gas emissions. Rice production contributes about 10% of global anthropogenic methane (CH4) emissions. Currently around 27.5% of Arkansas rice fields are flooded in the winter, which can increase CH4 emissions in the fallow season by 45% …

Background: Conventional chemotherapeutic agents, such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), can exert anti-tumor effects through immunogenic cell death (ICD) induction. Researchers have found hallmarks that quantify ICD (such as the translocation of HMGB1 and calreticulin). Although chemotherapeutic agents can induce ICD, they increase the expression of immune checkpoints, limiting their effectiveness. Studies have emphasized the importance of investigating the heterogeneous responses of cells co-localized in a solid tumor (macrophages, tumor cells, etc.) to ICD induction. However, these studies were performed in vivo, which limits the collection of information on cell-cell interactions due to model complexity.
Methods: In this study, we used a …

Water scarcity and rising global temperatures are two of the greatest current and future threats to poultry sustainability. Therefore, selection for water efficiency (WE) and heat resilience are of vital importance. Additionally, intestinal integrity is of critical importance under challenging conditions to maintain nutrient absorption and therefore, growth and performance of broilers. Here, we examined the effect of chronic cyclic heat stress (HS) on the ileal expression profile of tight-junction, gap-junction, adherens, and desmosome genes in the fourth generation of divergently selected low (LWE)- and high water efficient (HWE)-chicken lines. LWE birds exhibited higher levels of gut permeability, regardless of …

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a fast-growing plant that quickly produces a dense groundcover. The utilization of buckwheat as a cover crop in vegetable production could be beneficial to Georgia producers, however for successful adoption, weed control in the cover crop coupled with control of buckwheat volunteers must be achievable. A preemergence (PRE) and a postemergence (POST) experiment were each conducted three times in Ty Ty, GA (2020-2021) addressing these objectives. In the PRE study, acetochlor at 0.56 lb ai acre(-1) injured buckwheat up to 16% without negatively influencing growth, suggesting potential for use in buckwheat for weed control. Flumioxazin, fomesafen, …

Clostridium perfringens is a prevalent gut bacterial pathogen in humans and animals. This study investigated the role of the mechanistic targets of rapamycin (mTOR) and deoxycholic acid (DCA) on C. perfringens intestinal infection. Chickens were sequentially infected with Eimeria maxima and received the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin and DCA. C. perfringens-induced necrotic enteritis (NE) was evaluated using body weight gain (BWG), histopathology, bile acids, pathogen colonization, cell infiltration and death, and gene expression. The significant difference of p < 0.05 was analyzed by one-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons. Notably, rapamycin strongly reduced the subclinical and clinical NE histopathologies. DCA and DCA combined with rapamycin alleviated clinical NE and BWG loss. Rapamycin, DCA, and DCA + rapamycin attenuated bile acid reduction in NE birds, and they also reduced immune cell infiltration into the intestinal lamina propria as well as immune cell migration in vitro. At molecular levels, DCA and DCA + rapamycin reduced proinflammatory IFN gamma, MMP9, IL23, and IL17 gene expression. Rapamycin, DCA, and DCA + rapamycin reduced NE-induced intestinal cell apoptosis. Together, these results suggest that mTOR signaling mediates C. perfringens-induced ileitis, and combining mTOR inhibition and DCA improves the intervention efficacy against NE ileitis and BWG loss.

ObjectivesHumans display species-wide right-hand preference across tasks, but this pattern has not been observed at comparable levels in nonhuman primates, suggesting the behavior arose after the panin-hominin split. Muscle attachment sites (entheses) are used to infer soft tissue anatomy and reconstruct behaviors within skeletal populations, but whether entheseal size asymmetry can reflect hand preference remains unclear. If entheseal asymmetry is linked to hand preference, we expect to see greater asymmetry in human hands, where hand preference is more pronounced, compared to nonhuman primates. We tested for bilateral asymmetry in the size of the opponens pollicis muscle flange using a sample …

Altered food landscapes contribute importantly to wildlife disease dynamics and may play a critical role in host heterogeneity in disease outcomes through changes in host diet composition. We explored the effects of dietary macronutrient composition on disease pathology and feeding behavior of canaries (Serinus canaria domestica) infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG). In the first experiment, we provided canaries with isocaloric diets composed of identical ingredients that varied in macronutrient content (high protein or high lipid) then MG- or sham-inoculated birds. In the second experiment, we offered both diets to canaries before and after MG or sham inoculation. In experiment one, …

As global phosphorus (P) stores rapidly decline, P fed algal blooms continue to threaten critical freshwater resources across the globe. In the Midwestern United States (US), particularly the Corn Belt, biorefineries could play a key role in addressing this issue. By recovering P from the byproducts of ethanol production these facilities could reduce the P content of distillers grain feed, thereby reducing P excreted in manures. This process could potentially divert P away from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and toward renewable P (rP) fertilizer production utilizing the recovered P. To foster the inclusion of P recovery incentives in state …

As a result of climate change, global temperatures are increasing, and water scarcity is on the rise. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr] is one of the most important crops in the world due to its importance as food and feed. One of the major limiting factors for soybean production is drought, which can cause up to 80% reduction in yield. Therefore, growers and plant breeders are turning to soybean accessions that demonstrate better water use efficiency (WUE). However, in addition to drought, insect herbivory by soybean looper (Chrysodeixis includens, SBL) and fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, FAW) can also reduce soybean …

A Battle Among Sovereigns: Partnering Federal Exhaustion And Infringement Principles To Safeguard Tribal Court Jurisdiction Over Labor And Employment Disputes, Cody T. Preston
Arkansas Law Review
Since the shift in federal policy starting in the late 1960s towards Indian self-determination and self-government, Indian tribes have leveraged federal support to enter into a broad variety of commercial activities to fund their governments and community programs. Despite some of the earliest iterations of the policy of self-determination being a call to “break decisively with the past and to create the conditions for a new era in which the Indian future is determined by Indian acts and Indian decisions” and to uphold promises to provide tribes with “a standard of living comparable to that of other Americans,” tribes have …

Infiltrating The Black Box: Expanding The No-Impeachment Rule To Protect Defendants From Pervasive Juror Bias, Jordan Whitfield
Arkansas Law Review
In the United States, a criminal defendant is entitled to “a fair trial but not a perfect one, for there are no perfect trials.” However, defendants are also guaranteed the right to an impartial jury. While perfection within a jury is “an untenable goal,” a system that allows for juror bias during deliberations to go undetected threatens a defendant’s most crucial constitutional rights. Thus, when juror bias threatens to interfere with a defendant’s rights to a fair trial and impartial jury, there is a prevalent need for the judicial system to step in and mitigate the effects of juror bias. …
