The Relationship Between Visual Impairments And Socioeconomic Level Based On A Preschool Vision Screening Program., Verne Royal

All ETDs from UAB

The physiological, educational and psychosocial development of children is closely related to adequate visual functioning. Uncorrected visual defects can lead to more serious ocular damage. The distorted sensory information may hinder educational achievement as some 80 percent of learning occurs through the visual mode (Sherman, 1972), and inaccurate perception of one’s environment and the resulting inability to interact appropriately in educational and other social situations may result in psychosocial damage.

X-Ray Crystallographic Structure Determination Of Aminotri-N-Propylarsonium Chloride And Mass Spectral Study Of Amino-Trialkylarsonium Chlorides., Jake Samuel Vacarella Jan 1975

X-Ray Crystallographic Structure Determination Of Aminotri-N-Propylarsonium Chloride And Mass Spectral Study Of Amino-Trialkylarsonium Chlorides., Jake Samuel Vacarella

All ETDs from UAB

Aminotri-n-propylarsonium chloride was originally prepared by Krannich (1) by the chloramination of tri-n-propylarsine. On the basis of infrared data, it was assumed that the compound was an aminoarsonium chloride salt. However, a pentavalent structure was also a possibility.

Evaluation Of Temper Embrittlement In 2.25 Cr- 1 Mo Weld Metals Utilizing X-Ray Diffraction., Raymond George Thompson

All ETDs from UAB

Temper embrittlement in low alloy steel is a phenomenon of reversible embrittlement occurring when a susceptible alloy is held in or slowly cooled through a temperature range of 1100 - 650 °F (13). Characteristics of this type of embrittlement are a reduction in notch toughness, an increase in the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature as measured by Charpy vee-notch impact tests, and a change in fracture mode from ductile transgranular to brittle intergranular.

The Convergence Of A Sequence Of Functions Defined By Radicals., Eugene Pinkston Cooper Jan 1975

The Convergence Of A Sequence Of Functions Defined By Radicals., Eugene Pinkston Cooper

All ETDs from UAB

In the study of Real Analysis one problem which is often presented is to show that for x > 0, the sequence ✓x, √x + √x, ..., converges to a limit function and to determine the limit function. Since the limit function may be expressed as the positive solution of a quadratic equation, a question arises as to the behavior of similar sequences with radicals of degree greater than two.

Frequency Analysis Of Complex Auditory Cues., William Major Mills Jan 1975

Frequency Analysis Of Complex Auditory Cues., William Major Mills

All ETDs from UAB

A basic attribute of the human auditory system is its capacity for extracting information from an often complex acoustic environment. This concept is reflected in Ohm's acoustical law which holds that the ear is able to "hear out" the simple tonal components of a complex sound. Essentially, the ear has been thought to perform a Fourier analysis on the incoming waveform (Boring, 1942).

On The Relative Contribution Of Stress And Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Deprivation To The Retention Deficit Following Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Deprivation., Steven R. Mitchell

All ETDs from UAB

The question of what role, if any, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep plays in memory consolidation has yet to be answered. Those studies which find evidence for a functional role of REM in consolidation do so by comparing REM deprived (REMD) animals, which are subjected to cold, wetness, isolation, and fatigue, with caged controls, which are subjected to none of these.

As portions of George Orwell's 1984 (1949) and Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock (1970) approach the realm of reality, it is possible that human learning in the future will likewise have characteristics that most people deem an impossibility today. Tomorrow's learner will demand accessibility to a variety of information relevant to his or her programmed courses of study. According to Goodlad, O’Toole, and Tyler (1966), tomorrow's learner will process more information at a faster rate and with more comprehension than does the learner of today. Future educators will be required to abandon certain segments of education as we know it today, …

Strictly Orthodox Bisimple Semigroups Of Type-Ω, I., Myra Millican Borden Jan 1975

Strictly Orthodox Bisimple Semigroups Of Type-Ω, I., Myra Millican Borden

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this paper is to describe the structure of strictly orthodox bisimple semigroups of type-ω.Since E(S) E(T), E(S) is a sub semigroup of S. Hence S is an orthodox semigroup in the sense of Hall (3). Now, if Green's relations Rand L are congruence relations on both T and E(S) then we call S a strictly orthodox bisimple semigroup of type-ω.

Calcium complexes of polysaccharides that contain D-glucuronate residues have been implicated in such biological processes as calcium storage, calcification, and calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion. In 1957, Farber, Schubert and Schuster investigated the binding of sodium, potassium, and calcium cations to chondroitin sulfate polyanions.

Actors In Family Disturbance Related Crimes In A Large Southern City., William Virgil Pelfrey Jan 1975

Actors In Family Disturbance Related Crimes In A Large Southern City., William Virgil Pelfrey

All ETDs from UAB

The family, the backbone of society, is supposed to be an oasis of serenity where love abounds. Such is not always the case. Actually "There are more police calls for family conflicts than for murders, aggravated batteries, and all other serious crimes." The problem of family disturbances is said to have an iceberg quality because such a large portion of the problem has remained below the level of public consciousness. Perhaps the public has intentionally disregarded the problem of family disturbances. Typically, Americans seem to ignore unpleasantries until they affect them as individuals.

An Experimental Evaluation Of The Pairing Enrichment Program., Patricia Y. Travis

All ETDs from UAB

Maslow (1954, 1962) described the self-actualizing person as a person who is more fully functioning and lives a more enriched life than does the average person. The self-actualizing person tends to fulfill to the utmost his potentiality to be fully human and to gain the greatest potential and satisfaction in living. The term self-actualization refers to the process of making actual or real, of implementing or putting into motion, the potential resources of an individual.

Principle of General CovarianceSpecial relativity and classical mechanics share the principle of invariance of the laws of physics in all inertial reference frames. They differ in that the postulate of the constancy of the velocity of light holds in special relativity. On the other hand, the premise of general relativity is that the laws of physics be expressed in generally covariant equations. General covariance means that the equations expressing the laws have the same form for all reference frames. Such a formulation of the laws is made possible by using the tensor calculus developed by Ricci and LeviCivita. This follows …

Effect Of Porosity On The Creep Rupture Behavior Of Low Alloy Steel Weldments., Haines Andrews O'Neil Jan 1975

Effect Of Porosity On The Creep Rupture Behavior Of Low Alloy Steel Weldments., Haines Andrews O'Neil

All ETDs from UAB

This thesis reports on a study of the effects of porosity on the high temperature creep characteristics of low-alloy steel weldments. The material selected for investigation was ASTM A387-D, a 2-1/4% Chromium - 1% 15 Molybdenum low-alloy steel. This material is used in the fabrication of nuclear and petro-chemical reactor vessels, steam generators, piping, valves, etc. in which the operating conditions are high temperatures, high pressures and large cross-sections.Porosity is the most common cause for weld rejection in all welded materials. The resulting loss of productivity construction schedule delays, and of course, costs for rework more than adequately justify a …

Emission of a gamma ray from a nucleus is a result of a nuclear transition from one energy level to another. If the emitting nucleus is not bound in a crystal lattice, some of the transition energy, or the difference in energy of the two nuclear levels, may be imparted to the nucleus as it recoils, much as a gun acquires energy in recoiling after firing a bullet. This energy is termed the recoil energy associated with the transition. Consequently the energy of the emitted photon differs from the transition energy.
