The Effect Of Fine And Gross Motor Skill Training On The Reading And Mathematics Achievement Scores Of First Grade Students., Sarah Margaret Kneisley

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to determine if the development of fine and gross motor skills contributed to reading and mathematics achievement scores among first grade students. The study was conducted using a pretest/posttest control group design. The 43 first grade students were randomly assigned to experimental and control group conditions. Experimental group subjects participated in an eight-week (23-hour) training program during the spring of 1983. The control group subjects were pretested prior to the treatment program and posttested at the conclusion to determine mathematics achievement, reading achievement, and motor proficiency. All data were analyzed using independent and dependent …

Using Two-Level Grammars To Describe The Syntax Of English., Robert Dale Johnson Jan 1984

Using Two-Level Grammars To Describe The Syntax Of English., Robert Dale Johnson

All ETDs from UAB

Two-level grammars (2LGs) have traditionally been used to define the syntax and semantics of programming languages. However, this paper will show that 2LGs can also be used to describe the syntax of English sentences, as well as to perform context checks to ensure that an English sentence is grammatical. Briefly stated, the metarules of a 2 LG may be used to generate an English sentence, much in the same way as a context-free grammar might. Once the sentence is generated, the hyperrules of the 2LG may be used to verify that the sentence exhibits subject/verb agreement, subject/object agreement (if required), …

Models For Calculating Voltage Dip Caused By Induction Motor Starting., Harold Jack Robison Jan 1984

Models For Calculating Voltage Dip Caused By Induction Motor Starting., Harold Jack Robison

All ETDs from UAB

The induction motor is the major power utilization component in a large industrial plant. A typical plant will have several dispersed motors operating at certain speeds and loadings while other motors are at a standstill. When a large motor is switched onto the distribution system, a disturbance is created which will impact the operation of running motors and other equipment electrically removed from the point of connection. For instance, a large motor started across-the-line will have an inrush current of from five to eight times its normal full-load value, and damage to the motor can result. Such magnitudes of current …

The identification of individual source is one of the main objectives of the forensic serologist when analyzing blood, bloodstains, or other body fluids. Certainly, the more we know about a specific blood sample, the more we can learn about an alleged criminal act. All individuality is due to variations between people or things, and blood is no exception (Sensabaugh, 1982). Numerous enzymes and other proteins occur in various forms in the blood and other body fluids. These different forms of proteins in a population (polymorphism) exhibit demonstrable genetic variation.

During the past 40 years, the United States has experienced several strategic material shortages prompted by crises such as World War II and the Korean War. Historically, the issue of a critical materials policy by the United States was not addressed until shortages of materials hindered the manufacturing capabilities of industry. However, the United States has recently begun to acknowledge that there is another potential critical materials problem developing.

Frequently the need to identify or exclude an individual arises in criminal cases. Historically, fingerprinting has been a universally acceptable method of individual identification. Unfortunately, fingerprints are not always found at the crime scene ; therefore, other methods for identification of an individual are needed. One of these is the typing of body fluids, particularly blood, for genetic markers that may distinguish one individual from another.

Comparison Of The Effects Of Introversion, Extraversion And Anxiety On Conditioning., Hugh Boyd Wicks Jan 1984

Comparison Of The Effects Of Introversion, Extraversion And Anxiety On Conditioning., Hugh Boyd Wicks

All ETDs from UAB

Extraversion, anxiety, and two different experimental conditions were varied independently in a 2 x 2 x 2 study of eyeblink conditioning and extinction. The Eysenck Personality Inventory and the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale were given to 167 college students of both sexes to measure individual differences in extraversion and anxiety, respectively. Students who scored in the upper or lower quartiles on these tests were classified as either anxious extraverts, non-anxious extraverts, anxious introverts, or non-anxious introverts. Subjects learned under one or the other of two sets of conditions. One set--partial reinforcement, low UCS strength, and short CS-UCS interval--is expected to …

Localization Of Fc Receptors On Murine Spermatozoa., John Lawrence Hinton Jan 1984

Localization Of Fc Receptors On Murine Spermatozoa., John Lawrence Hinton

All ETDs from UAB

Studies on the localization of acrosomal enzymes have shown that a heat stable component in non-immune serum binds to the acrosomal region of spermatozoa of a number of species (Weil and Finkler, 1959; Edwards, 1960). Beck et al. (1962) demonstrated by immunofluorescent techniques that this serum component is an immunoglobulin molecule and it can bind to both the acrosome and tail region of homologous and heterologous spermatozoa. Symons and Herbert (1971) characterized it as IgG in the mouse, while Johnson (1968) showed it to be IgG2 in the guinea pig. IgM and IgA do not show detectable binding to mammalian …

Phase Spectrum Of The Visually Evoked Eeg Response As A Measure Of Latency., James Harris Strickland Jan 1984

Phase Spectrum Of The Visually Evoked Eeg Response As A Measure Of Latency., James Harris Strickland

All ETDs from UAB

The latency of evoked response waveforms has become an important clinical parameter. Latency is defined as the time between stimulus onset and a specific peak of the evoked response waveform. The latency of the visual evoked response (VER) waveform is a measure of neural conduction time in diagnosing multiple sclerosis (Regan, 1979). Slowed conduction shown by abnormally increasedpeak latencies in different sensory evoked responses can also help locate tumors and other structural lesions of the nervous system, areas of ischemia, and infarction (Grundy, 1983). Investigators have measured the latency of evoked responses in studies designed to find anesthetic drugs which …

Computer Assisted Continuous Infusion Of Fentanyl During Cardiac Anesthesia., James Michael Alvis Jan 1984

Computer Assisted Continuous Infusion Of Fentanyl During Cardiac Anesthesia., James Michael Alvis

All ETDs from UAB

Computers are becoming an integral part of routine clinical medicine. Recently, with the advent of the microcomputer, it has become possible to move this new technology into the operating room and, therefore, into the anesthesiologist's domain.Anesthesiology is a very dynamic field: some research in this field is making the practice of anesthesia a more precise science. Nevertheless, today anesthesia is at least as much an art as it is a science, relying heavily on the experience of the anesthesiologist in attendance to diagnose and treat the patient. This normally involves choice of an appropriate drug, calculation of the correct dosage, …

Fundulus Grandis Response To Exogenous Lh Injection., Mary Claire Reddington Jan 1984

Fundulus Grandis Response To Exogenous Lh Injection., Mary Claire Reddington

All ETDs from UAB

Piscine responsiveness to exogenous mammalian gonadotropin injection was assessed in Fundulus grandis, the Gulf killifish. Responsiveness was measured through the reproductive parameters of plasma sex steriod levels (estrogen for the female and testosterone for the male animals) as well as gonadalsomatic indexes, GSI. Females were also evaluated on the microscopic and macroscopic appearance of the ovary. Injections of ovine luteinizing hormone (o-LH) were made at different times of the day (early, midday, and late) as well as during times of differing reproductive condition (different times of the year). Additionally, a dose response curve to the o-LH was determined on both …

The Electrical Stimulation Of Bone Formation., Elie K. Chamoun Jan 1984

The Electrical Stimulation Of Bone Formation., Elie K. Chamoun

All ETDs from UAB

In 1957 Fukada demonstrated that bone has piezoelectric properties, that is, bone produces electric current and potential in response to mechanical forces. The same phenomena were reported in 1962 by Bassett who found that the potentials developed in the area of compression were negative, and positive in the area of tension. In 1968 Cochran performed experiments on wet bone as well as in vivo experiments on cats. There was no difference between the potential patterns from dead or living bone in response to a mechanical force. In 1971 Marino suggested that collagen was the source of a piezoelectric potential.
