Acuity, Luminance And Monocular Deprivation In The Cat., Elizabeth Cates Smyly
All ETDs from UAB
Hubel and Wiesel (1970) described a "critical period" in the developing visual system of the cat extending from birth through the first three to four months of life based upon the ocular dominance condition of cortical neurons in monocularly deprived (MD) cats. Monocular deprivation during this period resulted in ocular dominance shifting in favor of the nondeprived eye. They determined that the effects of monocular deprivation were approximately proportional to the period of deprivation with a maximum sensitivity during the fourth and fifth week. After four months, cortical ocular dominance was found to be relatively immune to deprivation. Later physiological …

Improved Calculation And Display For Dose Distributions Associated With Intrauterine Radiotherapy., Nora Chan-Chi Lin
All ETDs from UAB
A computer program has been developed for dose distribution calculations associated with an intrauterine applicator. The program reconstructs the exact source positions from two orthogonal x-ray projections. The dosages delivered to reference points A and B are calculated. In addition, isodose curves are constructed on selected planes from which approximate three-dimensional dose distributions can be reconstructed.
Design And Analysis Of Refractive Optical Systems For Irradiance Redistribution Of Collimated Radiation., Patrick Walter Rhodes
Design And Analysis Of Refractive Optical Systems For Irradiance Redistribution Of Collimated Radiation., Patrick Walter Rhodes
All ETDs from UAB
Lens systems that modify the irradiance distribution of a collimated beam of radiation are useful primarily in applications involving laser beams. Since a laser is a source of high intensity, coherent, monochromatic light, a number of diverse applications for lasers have been suggested. However, the laser beam does not have uniform distribution of light intensity across its diameter and there are many cases where this is a severe drawback.

The Tensor Analyzing Power In Deuteron-Proton Reaction With The Weakly Bound Projectile Model., Chang-Shung Tung
All ETDs from UAB
The computer program developed previously for calculating the predictions of the Weakly Bound Projectile model for (d,p) and (d,n) reactions on spin-zero target nuclei, has been modified to calculate the angular distributions for tensor analyzing components T20 and T22. Comparison has been made with the measured values for the reactions 52Cr(d,p)53cr (ground state, Jn = 3/2, Ï€=-1, Q = 5.719 MeV) and 52Cr(d,p)53cr (first excited state, Jn = 1/2, Ï€ = -1, Q = 5.149 MeV) to study the Jn dependence of the calculated analyzing power, to test the n model, and to determine the dependence of the calculations on …
Conservatism In Transition: American Conservative Social Thought, 1860 - 1920., Larry Patrick Battles
Conservatism In Transition: American Conservative Social Thought, 1860 - 1920., Larry Patrick Battles
All ETDs from UAB
It required little perceptiveness to call this a period of transition. In a sense, all periods are transitional. Seldom, however, has the transition been so pronounced and the participants so acutely aware that they were living through a transition. Prior to 1860, as Wiebe put it, Americans lived in "island communities:" small, isolated, relatively homogeneous populations comfortable in their assumptions about the world and confident of their universal applicability.
The Relationship Between Religious Orientations And Levels Of Moral Judgment., Logan C. Jones
The Relationship Between Religious Orientations And Levels Of Moral Judgment., Logan C. Jones
All ETDs from UAB
This paper will investigate the possible relationships between religious orientations and morality. While it is generally assumed that religion and morality are related, previous research has not supported this contention. The evidence to date indicates that only a slight or even negligible correlation exists between religion and morality (see Hartshorne and May, 1928; Kilpatrick, 1949; Black and London, 1966; Batson, 1976). This research has mainly concentrated on overt behaviors; for example, religion has been defined as the frequency of church attendance and morality has been defined in terms of altruism.

Underwood (1969) conceptualized memory for a word as involving the retention of a collection of attributes. Different types of encoded information are represented by these attributes, which serve to discriminate one memory from another. The attributes which are established as a memory during learning, may vary as a function of age.

The Effect Of Learning On The Perception Of Orthographic Symbols., Trudy J. Frey
All ETDs from UAB
The process of reading requires that an efficient transition be made from a visual symbol to a word name and to its meaning. For most adults this process is relatively easy. The experienced reader does not have to consciously spell out every letter or word to arrive at the meaning of a sentence; however, the case is different for children who are learning to read. The translation from a visual symbol to a word name and its meaning is a seemingly difficult one.
Conscious And Automatic Processing Of Semantic And Acoustic Attributes By Mildly Mentally Retarded And Nonretarded Young Adults., John Thomas Sandy
Conscious And Automatic Processing Of Semantic And Acoustic Attributes By Mildly Mentally Retarded And Nonretarded Young Adults., John Thomas Sandy
All ETDs from UAB
Nonretarded and mentally retarded individuals, 16 to 20 years old, served as subjects in two experiments which tested the effects of semantic and acoustic word attributes. In the conscious processing task, one group rated each stimulus word as "good" or "bad" (incidental semantic task), another group formed rhyme (incidental acoustic group) and a third group was given no processing strategy. Subjects were tested using a standard recognition test and a rhyme recognition test, immediately and after 24 hours. The results revealed that the nonretarded group was superior to the mentally retarded group in the semantic condition. In Experiment 2, the …

Annual Cycle Of Serum Gonadal Steroids And Serum Lipids Associated With Migration Of The Striped Mullet, Mugil Cephalus L., John Joseph Dindo
All ETDs from UAB
The striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, a valuable food resource for man, has been found in estuaries throughout the world. The present study examines changing physiological responses of the reproductive system in conjunction with the fall schooling and migratory periods.Serum gonadal steroids increased 8-10 fold from late September to the end of November for both sexes. The gonadal mass and Gonado-Somatic Index of Mugil cephalus rose rapidly in October and November returning to prespawning values in December. Fluctuations were observed in the serum total lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides, throughout the study period. A decline in the summer followed by a sharp …

An In Vitro Electrochemical Corrosion Study Of Coupled Surgical Implant Materials., Charles Durward Griffin
All ETDs from UAB
The use of surgical implants in the human body is common and increasing in frequency. The materials used in biological applications vary widely according to the specific conditions of use. In cases requiring high strength, resistance to fatigue and wear, the chosen material is often a metallic alloy. Regardless of the choice of materials, one of the major design criteria.is compatibility between the implant and the human body. Two of the basic phenomena of interest in observing the effect of implanted materials on tissues of the body are: the direct response of tissues adjacent to the implanted material, and the …
Postnatal Testicular Development In 3 Inbred Strains Of Mice., John Howard Wilters
Postnatal Testicular Development In 3 Inbred Strains Of Mice., John Howard Wilters
All ETDs from UAB
A large amount of genetic variability exists in the size and functional characteristics of male gonads between strains of inbred mice (Shire and Bartke, 1972; Hayward, 1973: Eleftheriou and Lucas, 1974). Shire and Bartke noted marked variations in both the absolute and relative postnatal testicular weights in 11 strains from 56 to 112 days of age. The relative weight (mg of testes/100g of body weight) increased for most strains. The DBA/2J strain increased by 123mg, the C57BL/6J by 84mg and the AKR/J strain by only 45mg. The C57BL/10J strain however was unique in that it showed a decrease of 235mg …

The American Concrete Institute Committee 313 on "Bin Wall Design and Construction" introduced a comprehensive recommended design procedure on silo design in 1968. The Committee recommended using Janssen's formula (1) for static pressure calculations on silo walls. The procedure has been described in detail under "Design Procedures" in Chapter 2. This Committee's recommendations were highly criticized because much higher pressures had been measured than those predicted by Janssen's static pressure formula.
