Frequently the need to identify or exclude an individual arises in criminal cases. Historically, fingerprinting has been a universally acceptable method of individual identification. Unfortunately, fingerprints are not always found at the crime scene ; therefore, other methods for identification of an individual are needed. One of these is the typing of body fluids, particularly blood, for genetic markers that may distinguish one individual from another.

Studies on the localization of acrosomal enzymes have shown that a heat stable component in non-immune serum binds to the acrosomal region of spermatozoa of a number of species (Weil and Finkler, 1959; Edwards, 1960). Beck et al. (1962) demonstrated by immunofluorescent techniques that this serum component is an immunoglobulin molecule and it can bind to both the acrosome and tail region of homologous and heterologous spermatozoa. Symons and Herbert (1971) characterized it as IgG in the mouse, while Johnson (1968) showed it to be IgG2 in the guinea pig. IgM and IgA do not show detectable binding to mammalian …

The objective of this study was to develop an automated and microprocessor-controlled flow injection analysis system for sulfur dioxide using a West-Gaeke method. Two systems were developed for this purpose: The first system allowed continuous reagent flow into the carrier stream, while the second system allowed programmed injection of reagent into the carrier stream.

Piscine responsiveness to exogenous mammalian gonadotropin injection was assessed in Fundulus grandis, the Gulf killifish. Responsiveness was measured through the reproductive parameters of plasma sex steriod levels (estrogen for the female and testosterone for the male animals) as well as gonadalsomatic indexes, GSI. Females were also evaluated on the microscopic and macroscopic appearance of the ovary. Injections of ovine luteinizing hormone (o-LH) were made at different times of the day (early, midday, and late) as well as during times of differing reproductive condition (different times of the year). The activated sludge process is used by the coal-coking industry to treat toxic substances from the wastewater generated by the coking process. High levels of ammonia, phenol, cyanide, and thiocyanate are removed from the wastewater by the activity of a mixed microbial community. Though the microbes efficiently remove the toxic compounds, they in turn create a problem: the removal of the biomass that is generated in the degradation of these compounds. The transport and disposal of the excess sludge results in what is possibly the largest cost factor in the activated sludge treatment of wastewater.Because the microbial community is essential …

Increasing quantities of solid waste production by our society is beginning to cause severe problems with disposal. Municipal production alone amounts to 150 million tons annually (14). Rural production represents less of a problem since farmers have been recycling manure and other farm wastes back to the land for centuries. The primary problem lies in finding a sanitary means of disposing of municipal waste.

Cyanide occurs in the wastewater of a variety of industries, particularly those involved in steel production, metal plating, coal gasification and in the manufacture of chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals. Because of its toxicity, cyanide is generally removed from wastewaters by chemical and physical methods, including alkaline chlorination, complexation and acidification, prior to biological treatment. A disadvantage of these processes is their cost.

A Study Of Asymmetry In Mosquitofish Populations In Polluted And Nonpolluted Environments Using A New Scale Staining Technique., J Mark Brubaker

Levels of fluctuating asymmetry were compared in two populations of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) from polluted waters and two populations from nonpolluted waters. Two of the characters studied, pectoral fin rays and lateral line scales, showed no asymmetry in these populations and therefore provided no data for comparisons. A third character, number of pores in the lateral line scales, showed asymmetry in all populations. Asymmetry was quantified in two ways: the absolute difference between counts on left and right sides Id I, and the number of asymmetrical scale pairs, ASP. Many neurologic and neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, brain and spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis not only impair speech production, but also make one unable to communicate with hand signals. This has the effect of virtually isolating the victim from social interaction. According to a report from the University of Wisconsin's Trace Research Institute, there are as many as 500,000 such people in this country. One family in four is at one time or another faced with a communication disorder of some degree of severity (Baker, 1982).
