Unexpected And Usual Breaks' Impact On Body Composition In College Athletes, Aston Dommel Jan 2022

Unexpected And Usual Breaks' Impact On Body Composition In College Athletes, Aston Dommel

All ETDs from UAB

Body composition is an important factor that determines athletic performance. At the elite level, margins of victory are narrow, with small changes in performance making the difference between victory and defeat. Changes in body composition affect performance, in both improvements and decrements. Athletes regularly experience breaks from structured activity and resources caused by expected circumstances (school breaks, off-season) and unexpected circumstances (injury, COVID-19). Due to differences in diet, physical activity, and other factors, breaks may cause changes in body composition that can hinder or help the athlete upon return to structured resources. Currently, there is a plethora of cross-sectional research …

Integrated Structural Health Monitoring Techniques Using Drone Sensors, Abdelaziz Ibrahem Mohammed Abdellatef Jan 2022

Integrated Structural Health Monitoring Techniques Using Drone Sensors, Abdelaziz Ibrahem Mohammed Abdellatef

All ETDs from UAB

Bridges, as long-life large structures, are considered a challenge in both their construction and maintenance. Since they are subjected to frequent cyclic loads normally and accidents occasionally, they are prone to possible damages during their lifetime. There-fore, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a must to avoid collapse or undesired closing. Various methods are used for that purpose that differ in their cost, efficiency, and ac-curacy. To obtain a better understating of the acceleration records of the bridge, the response of the vibrating beam subjected to stationary or moving mass is first studied by solving the equations of motion of both …

Tooth Agenesis: Prevalence And Pattern Among Different Ethnicities, Gabrielle Coe Jan 2022

Tooth Agenesis: Prevalence And Pattern Among Different Ethnicities, Gabrielle Coe

All ETDs from UAB

Tooth agenesis is one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans and is defined as the failure of tooth development or odontogenesis. Prevalence of non-syndromic tooth agenesis has a reported range of 1.6-36.5% and varies by gender, ethnicity, and location. While tooth agenesis is well studied, information within ethnic groups requires further investigation. In this study, dental records of 3033 patients of the UAB School of Dentistry were evaluated to identify and categorize missing teeth by ethnicity and gender. Data analysis was conducted with Chi-square or Fisher’s exact test, with a two-sided significance level of 0.05. An overall prevalence …

The Association Between Metabolically Healthy Obesity And Coronary Heart Disease Among Regards Study Participants, Kiara N. Aaron Jan 2022

The Association Between Metabolically Healthy Obesity And Coronary Heart Disease Among Regards Study Participants, Kiara N. Aaron

All ETDs from UAB

A major obstacle to the advancement of our understanding of the metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) phenotype is the inconsistent definition of metabolic health and obesity among studies. A harmonized definition of MHO in adults has been proposed based on the diagnosis of obesity (BMI > 30 k/m2) and meeting the cardio-metabolic criteria for triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), no antihypertensive treatment, fasting blood glucose, and no drug treatment with glucose-lowering agents. In addition, waist circumference can be associated with increased disease risk when WC is >94 cm in men and >80 cm in …

The Role Of Complement C3 In Iga Nephropathy, Sarah Elizabeth Coffee Jan 2022

The Role Of Complement C3 In Iga Nephropathy, Sarah Elizabeth Coffee

All ETDs from UAB

IgA nephropathy is an autoimmune disease characterized by glomerular IgA1- containing immunodeposits. These immunodeposits are enriched for aberrantly glycosylated IgA1 bound by IgG autoantibodies and contain complement component C3. Current research suggests a multi-hit disease pathogenesis: IgAN patients have elevated serum levels of IgA1 missing galactose in some hinge region O-glycans; this galactosedeficient IgA1 is recognized by IgG autoantibodies resulting in formation of circulating immune complexes; some of these complexes deposit in the glomeruli and induce kidney injury. As there is no disease-specific treatment, many patients progress to kidney failure. In this master’s thesis I sought to assess whether C3 …

Conclusion: Specialists and general dentists use a …

Klf2 Regulation Of Glycocalyx Expression, Barrier Function, And Thromboinflammation In Human Lung Microvascular Endothelial Cells, Cambria O'Grady Jan 2022

Klf2 Regulation Of Glycocalyx Expression, Barrier Function, And Thromboinflammation In Human Lung Microvascular Endothelial Cells, Cambria O'Grady

All ETDs from UAB

KLF2 is an important transcription factor for maintaining vascular homeostasis. Its expression in endothelial cells is triggered by shear stress. The endothelial glycocalyx also plays a role in regulating vascular function, and prior work has shown that glycocalyx expression is affected by shear stress as well. However, the direct link between KLF2 and mechanisms that regulate glycocalyx synthesis has not been established. In the present study, we used human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HLMVECs) to observe changes in glycocalyx expression, barrier function, and thromboinflammation caused by KLF2 overexpression. Lentiviral transduction was the method used for KLF2 overexpression, resulting in a …

Study Of Microrna-23a Cluster In Bone Formation, Revati Suryawanshi Jan 2022

Study Of Microrna-23a Cluster In Bone Formation, Revati Suryawanshi

All ETDs from UAB

The differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells to pre-osteoblasts, lies upon various transcription factors and physiological signaling, but is also governed by the micro-RNA-23a cluster. The miR-23a cluster has miR-23a, miR-27a and miR-24-2 transcribed from a single promoter as a sole RNA primary transcript. Its effects have been observed in embryonic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and in cancer (1-2). It regulates the lineage commitment of MSCs. (3). With respect to bone formation, miR-23a cluster is involved MSCs commitment to and osteoblast maturation (4). Here, through in vivo and in vitro experiments, we report that knock down of microRNA-23a cluster …

Kitchen exhaust hoods are designed to capture the cooking emissions, but it is not well understood whether the commercial kitchen exhaust hoods in food trucks are properly, efficiently operated to reduce the workers' exposure to such harmful contaminants. The purpose of the study was to evaluate food truck workers' exposure to respirable particulates generated from cooking process …

Predictors Of Us Hospital Responsiveness To International Patient Inquiries, Suzanne M. Garber Jan 2022

Predictors Of Us Hospital Responsiveness To International Patient Inquiries, Suzanne M. Garber

All ETDs from UAB

Medical travel has been growing at a steady rate as global travel has also increased. However, with the advent of COVID-19, all global travel came to a screeching halt, including travel intended for medical purposes across borders. Now that travel is resuming worldwide, American hospital administrators are anxious to fill their beds with more profitable, international patients to make up for revenue losses incurred during the pandemic. Existing literature on the topic of medical tourism focuses on the role of patient initiative, choice, and risk-taking behaviors with little mention of hospital leadership’s ability or desire to construct a management strategy, …

The Effect Of Federally Qualified Health Centers (Fqhcs) Prevalence On Uncompensated Care In Us Hospitals, Kena R. Norris Jan 2022

The Effect Of Federally Qualified Health Centers (Fqhcs) Prevalence On Uncompensated Care In Us Hospitals, Kena R. Norris

All ETDs from UAB

Over the past two decades, uncompensated care in U.S. hospitals has grown at a staggering rate and reached $46.4 billion in 2013. It began to decline in 2014, due to the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), but is now on the rise again. Uncompensated care is typically affected by policy and market factors such as legislative changes and an increase in the number of uninsured. While hospitals continue to serve as critical safety net providers, they are often not the only or most appropriate facility to serve the indigent in U.S. communities. Instead, federally qualified …

The Effect Of Integrative Medicine Interventions On Patient Activation Measure, Rochelle F. Richards Jan 2022

The Effect Of Integrative Medicine Interventions On Patient Activation Measure, Rochelle F. Richards

The study’s primary purpose is to evaluate the use of Integrative Medicine Interventions (IMIs) and their relationship to patient activation levels; and to investigate the association between IMI protocols and patient activation levels on patient reported outcomes (PROs) for those with chronic diseases, specifically chronic fatigue and mental health-related conditions of anxiety and depression, using the principles of Integrative Medicine’s (IM) whole-person approach as the model of care in independent IM practices across the …

Alterations In Synaptic Structure And Tau Phosphorylation In Alheimer's Disease, Courtney K. Walker Jan 2022

Alterations In Synaptic Structure And Tau Phosphorylation In Alheimer's Disease, Courtney K. Walker

All ETDs from UAB

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in individuals over the age of 65. Of the two hallmark pathologies of AD, tau neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) correlate more strongly with cognitive decline than do Aβ plaques. NFTs form in the entorhinal cortex (EC) and appear in anatomically connected regions over time as disease progresses. This tau spreading may occur via synaptic connections. Most excitatory synapses occur on dendritic spines, which house the postsynaptic machinery. Spines are actin-rich, plastic structures that change their size and shape in response to synaptic activity in a process that is dependent on actin …

Care-Resistant Behavior Trajectories Of Individuals Living With Dementia In Nursing Homes And Distal Outcomes In Oral Health: A Secondary Analysis, Chunhong Xiao Jan 2022

Care-Resistant Behavior Trajectories Of Individuals Living With Dementia In Nursing Homes And Distal Outcomes In Oral Health: A Secondary Analysis, Chunhong Xiao

All ETDs from UAB

Persons living with dementia who exhibit care-resistant behaviors (CRB) are likely to resist mouth care and have poor oral health. Knowing the “balance” between providing optimal mouth care while managing CRB is critical for developing tailored interventions. No evidence has demonstrated a balance between CRB level, mouth care completion, and oral health status. The overarching goal of this study was to identify a balance or “sweet spot” between enough mouth care to maintain oral health and a manageable level of CRB intensity. The purpose of this study was to examine and describe the characteristics of CRB trajectories as they relate …

The Effect Of Training On Eye Movement While Learning To Use A Non-Foveal Retinal Locus, Jason Eugene Vice Jan 2022

The Effect Of Training On Eye Movement While Learning To Use A Non-Foveal Retinal Locus, Jason Eugene Vice

All ETDs from UAB

Vision is our most far-reaching sense. It allows us to quickly detect information about the environment and enhances our ability to interact with the world around us. Accordingly, many neural areas are devoted to obtaining, processing, and interpreting visual information. When vision is impaired through normal aging or disease processes, the functional implications for a person can be quite significant. This is particularly true when a person is deprived of high acuity, central vision. Many people with bilateral central visual impairments learn to compensate for vision loss by adopting a viewing strategy that involves the use of the peripheral retina. …
