A Study Of Centralization In The Thai Police Department., Pairat Pongchareon Jan 1981

A Study Of Centralization In The Thai Police Department., Pairat Pongchareon

Individual liberty is one of the most important goals men seek and sometimes even fight for today. But freedom can be achieved only by those who live in a democratic society. In a totalitarian society, there is no freedom for the individual because the state has total control over man without limitations. Also, there is no individual movement in politics, economics, society, religion, or education under the realm of totalitarianism.

Chapter I introduces the reader to the high rate of crime and delinquent behavior associated with juveniles. In addition, the chapter points out the importance of strengthening the informal means of social control, particularly the educational system. Of particular concern is the need for instilling democratic attitudes and a sense of good citizenship as a way of combating the delinquent behavior of juveniles. The chapter further points out the universality of law and the importance of favorable, positive attitudes toward law. The need for strong attachments is also shown, citing Hirschi’s study. Studies showing positive non-delinquent attitudes with knowledge of …

The relationship which exists between the press and foreign policy in American political life has been and still is the subject of much debate. The degree of influence which the press exerts on the State Department has been perceived as ranging from non-existent to powerful enough to topple governments. For example, in 1949, the Communist forces of Mao Zse-dong drove the Nationalist Army of Chiang Kai-shek from the mainland of China. Press exposure of corruption, impotence, and waste of United States money and matériel was reportedly influential in Washington's decision to withdraw its support from Chiang, causing many Americans to …

Anodic Stripping Voltammetry Of Tellurium (Iv) In 1.0m Nh4, Scn At Rotating Disk Gallium - Thin-Film Electrode., Mojeed Tunde Olayiwola Jan 1981

Anodic Stripping Voltammetry Of Tellurium (Iv) In 1.0m Nh4, Scn At Rotating Disk Gallium - Thin-Film Electrode., Mojeed Tunde Olayiwola

All ETDs from UAB

The electroanalytical technique of anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV), using a gallium-thin film electrode in 1.0M NH4SCN at 60°C has been applied to study the electroanalytical chemistry of Te(IV). Both externally plated and in-situ plated thin-film gallium on rotating glassy carbon disk electrodes are presented. Detection limits of Te(IV) on various monolayer equivalents of gallium plated on a solid glassy carbon electrode are also presented. The sensitivity of this method, which is 1x10-9 TE(IV), is comparable to that of anodic stripping voltammetry using gold-plated electrodes.

Alcohol-Related Arrests In Birmingham., Robert L. Berry

All ETDs from UAB

Criminologists and historians generally conclude that the present is neither the best nor the worst as far as crime is concerned. Durkheim (1964) made a memorable observation on the inevitability of criminal acts when he said, "Crime is normal because a society exempt from it is utterly impossible" (p. 67).

Factors Contributing To Weight Loss Induced By Intraventricular 6-Hydroxydopamine Lesions In Diabetes (Db/Db) Mice., Mary Ann Pelleymounter

All ETDs from UAB

The diabetes mouse (db/db) is a genetic mutant that displays hyperphagia, obesity, hyperglycemia, hypoactivity and hypothermia. In addition, hypothalamic norepinephrine (NE) is elevated in these mice, in comparison to lean littermates. Recent work has shown that central catecholamine depletion produced by intraventricular infusion of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in the db/db mouse results in significant weight loss and decreased blood glucose levels. The purpose of this study was to examine both long and short term effects of central NE depletion in db/db mice and to evaluate some of the behavioral and physiological factors that may contribute to weight loss following 6-OHDA lesions. …

A Nominal Group Process Approach To Identification Of Assessment Needs Of Multi-Problem Elderly., Louise R. Thibodaux

All ETDs from UAB

Although nearly 11% of the population of the United States is over 65 years of age, there is, to date, no coherent national policy coordinating services to the elderly (Peterson, Powell and Robertson, 1976) . It is widely acknowledged that the elderly are the victims of inflation, rising crime, and lack of incentive to participate meaningfully in the nation’s economy. Nevertheless, Congress continues to plan for Federal assistance in a piecemeal fashion, treating senior citizens as a categorical group (Etzioni, 1976). Government services ranging from food stamps to crime prevention comprise 134 separate Federal programs administered under five executive departments …

An Assessment Of Alabama's 240-Hour State-Mandated Basic Police Training Curriculum., David Wayne Carlington

All ETDs from UAB

Within a period of only a few years, police training in the United States has moved from a situation of considerable ambivalence as to the need for any training of police personnel to a situation in which the need is now widely recognized. Only fools and liars would de-emphasize the priority of police training. However, there remains a wide rift between the nature and extent of the training that is required and the form it should take. Nevertheless, one premise appears to penetrate all debates ; the need for relevancy.
