Tolerance Education In The Hidden Curriculum: A Case Study On Indonesian Public School, Kevin Nobel Kurniawan Jan 2018

Tolerance Education In The Hidden Curriculum: A Case Study On Indonesian Public School, Kevin Nobel Kurniawan

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Religious intolerance is spreading within the Indonesian institution of education. Previous studies have shown that the growth of intolerance is due to the state’s regulation and pedagogical apparatus. In contrast to the previous studies, I argue that the intolerance is related to a hidden curriculum applied by the institution of education. Normatively, the hidden curriculum contains the value of religious tolerance. However, factually, I found evidence of practices of intolerance, through both the formal and informal spheres within the school structure, in a hidden curriculum. This article is written based on a qualitative approach with a mixed-method research strategy to …

Relational Capability And Commitment Of Extractive Industry Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Programs: A Case Study On A Geothermal Company In Sukabumi Regency, West Java, Fiel Kautsar

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs in extractive industries in Indonesia, which grew rapidly in the post-New Order era, can be seen as a means to develop local communities. However, such programs tend to be unilateral (one-sided), and leading to problems, because they often do not represent the expectations and needs of local communities. Previous studies about unilateral CSR in extractive industries categorized the programs into two types according to their substances: CSR as charity and CSR as mandatory. This article rejects both categories, as they do not optimally develop the local community. This article argues that the justice in CSR …

Self-Representation Among Dark-Skinned Individuals On The Discourse Of Beauty, Hasty Larasati

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article will explore how dark-skinned individuals perceive their skin color and whether they categorize their appearance as beautiful or ugly. Until recently, the dominant perception of beauty in Indonesia was represented by fair-skinned people, and this fact is strongly related to an individual’s identity. Dark skin is considered less beautiful. However, some individuals attempt to counteract the dominant beauty discourse. Previous literature studies found two reasons that support the counter-discourse toward beauty: recognition and negotiation. Recognition is an act of countering the mainstream discourse, while negotiation is an attempt to contest one’s identity based on their skin. This article …

Ketahanan Bahasa Indonesia Di Era Milenial, Oom Rohman Syamsudin

Jurnal Kajian Stratejik Ketahanan Nasional

This brief study aims at discussing the current condition of the Indonesian language which is sadly demonstrating signs of “deterioration”, as one of the consequences of the present social media assault. Ever more progress in the advances of sophisticated science and technology has broken down the endurance of standard Indonesian as demonstrated particularly by the millennial generation. This code mixing in language use is generally noticeable in writing a mixture of Indonesian and English, a common practice among today’s young generation in Twitter, Instagram and other social media. The use of elements of both language simultaniously, however, does not violate …

Pembangunan Yang Terbayang: Imajinasi Sosio-Teknikal Dalam Implementasi Pembangunan Berbasis Komunitas Di Indonesia, Hetsu Prahara

Antropologi Indonesia

This paper discusses the involvement of imagination in the implementation of several techniques for societal improvement introduced by intervention programs in Indonesia. Using the perspective of socio-technical imagination, I contend that the implementation of the World Bank’s Community- Driven Development (CDD) in Indonesia does not only revolve around technical matters, but also structured by collective imagination held by various development actors regarding the formation of desired social order. This paper is part of my reflexivity regarding my involvement as a researcher and filmmaker in a research project designed to evaluate the impact of the implementation of CDD program in health …

This article focuses on language practices of Puor and Lamalera people in Lembata Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia whenever they interact with each other in barter market. Both of them have different linguistic forms of vocabularies and dialects. Even though they have different languages, interestingly, they do not use Indonesian language as a lingua franca; they prefer to use their local languages in barter market. The limitation of their linguistic competence in Indonesian language as well as their perception of Indonesian language as a formal language, justifies their preference to local languages. They do not use Indonesian as their lingua …

Kronotop Kontra Politik Dan Visualitas Korban Dalam Film Dokumenter: Kajian Antropologi Media, Aryo Danusiri

Antropologi Indonesia

This article is my retrospective account on the making of one of my testimonial documentaries, “Kameng Gampoeng Nyang Keunong Geulawa” (The Village Goat that Takes the Beating, 1999) which was commissioned by a human rights-defender NGO based in Jakarta. The aim was to offer critical views on the Aceh conflict to the Indonesian public. By using chronotopes (Bakhtin, 1981) as the analytical tool, I delineate the way the Indonesian state and its military constituted a dominant view of Aceh as the Other by applying a semiotic model of authoritarian nationalism that circulated in the public sphere. As the counter-politics, I …

Antropologi Indonesia

Studies have shown the importance of identity politics in the ability for small-holders to form a solidarity in a collective action protest against development project. However, those studies do not show how the kinship relations in the context of adat system could shape the agency of small-holder to organize collective resistance against the development project that affects their livelihoods. Although we are not denying the importance of traditional kinship relations in developing solidarity among agrarian communities in Indonesia to carry out a public protest, kinship relations system might also be used by other interest such as government, contractor, and traditional …

“Kekerasan Dapat Dimaknai Berbeda-Beda”: Ragam Pemaknaan Atas Kekerasan Terhadap Perempuan Dalam Praktik Gerakan Sosial Aliansi Laki-Laki Baru, Febi Rizki Ramadhan

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

This article examines the variety of meaning towards violence against women in Aliansi Laki-laki Baru’s social movement practice as a social movement that focuses on issues regarding male engagement in ending violence against women and achieving gender equality. Using ethnographic methods, I argue that social movement, particularly Aliansi Laki-laki Baru, could not be understood as monolithic and homogeneous entity because its participants could have various meanings on violence against women. While violence against women could be contextualized as Aliansi Laki-laki Baru’s main focus, participants in ALB could construct their own meaning on ‘violence against women’ as a sociocultural phenomenon. Furthermore, …

However, efforts to preserve the prominence of the Country’s electricity sector have been ongoing as the sector is still experiencing sustained rolling blackouts, net import dependency and lack of transmission facility enforcement throughout the Indonesian archipelago. Such efforts have been varied from the incentivise policy and programs such as the Public-Private Partnership and the two phases of Fast Track Program. The reformation of electricity …
