Reversing Democracy: Examining The Nagari Institution In West Sumatra, Indonesia, Tengku Rika Valentina, Roni Ekha Putera, Irawati Irawati

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

Democracy consolidation is a process that reduces the possibility of reversing democratization, for the process is featured by negotiations among actors that wants to "promote" the new system or "rules of the game" rather than to damage the old system, and everything is reflected in the process of returning to the nagari in West Sumatra, Indonesia. There is an anomaly of power when the nature of state authority finally raises a "drama" of a political system directly applied to local nagari institutions. The renewal of nagari from previously imposed uniformity under the Village Government Law 5/1979 cannot be analyzed merely …

In Indonesia, the authority for underwater cultural resources found in the sea involves two government agencies that have different views on the underwater cultural heritage. On one hand, the cultural heritage is treated as “cultural goods” and on the other hand it is treated as “economic goods”. The first …

How To Win (Reviewer) Friends And Influence (Editorial) People, William M. Thomson

In this paper, the author goes through the hard lessons learned from nearly three decades of experience as a scientist, reviewer and (latterly) editor. He covers such topics as precision in technical writing, common errors in presenting and describing data, …

Hidden Narratives; Personal Albums From The Kitlv Collection And Their Captions, Liesbeth Ouwehand Apr 2019

Hidden Narratives; Personal Albums From The Kitlv Collection And Their Captions, Liesbeth Ouwehand

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article examines captions found in the various personal albums in the KITLV photo collection (Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde / Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Carribean Studies). The article shows that two types of captions can be distinguished: descriptive or identifying and commentary or refective captions. These captions are an important part of the albums’ materiality and composition. Hence, captions turn the albums into autobiographical objects for both compiler and intended audiences. It is argued that photo albums and their image content should not be read separately from the captions either physically or digitally in …

The Panther’S Fang In Search Of Indonesian Television Archives, Els Bogaerts Apr 2019

The Panther’S Fang In Search Of Indonesian Television Archives, Els Bogaerts

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The television serial Siung Macan Kombang (The Panther’s Fang), produced and broadcast by TVRI Stasiun Yogyakarta in 1992, has lived on in the collective memory of Javanese television audiences. Likewise, Indosiar’s Javanese drama programmes, broadcast in the mid-1990s, retrieve reminiscences of past times, when private broadcasters served specific ethnic and linguistic audiences with local entertainment linked to tradition. However, since most Indonesian television stations have not archived their audio-visual collections, the public no longer has access to audio-visual content from a deeper past. Hence these cultural resources have become intangible heritage; when the programmes cease to be recollected in tales …

"Elimination Of Culture Based Discrimination Against Women In Indonesia: An Assessment Of The Implementation Of State Parties’ Obligations Under Article 5(A) Of The Women’S Convention", Widya Naseva Tuslian

Indonesia Law Review

The notion of cultural relativism has always been a fundamental challenge to upholding human rights values, especially regarding gender mainstreaming and the equality of both sexes. In this sense, there is a view that cross-cultural moral values are not acceptable given thecultural traits that produce their own modes of thinking and ideology. It is thus understandable that Article 5(a) of the Women’s Convention (i.e.,The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women), which is the only provision in international law that seeks to modify cultures that prejudice women, will deal with constant hurdles in countries like Indonesia …

Implementing The Extraterritoriality Principle To Strengthen Competition Law Enforcement In Indonesia In The Aec Era: A Comparative Study, Muhammad Rifky Wicaksono, Kusuma Raditya, Laurensia Andrini, Muhammad Hawin

Indonesia Law Review

The regional economic integration that ensues from the ASEAN Economy Community will provide its members not only with boundless opportunities for economic growth, but also with unprecedented challenges. The demands of a more interconnected regional economy would require the Indonesian government, as guardians of the competitive process in the Indonesian market, to protect it from anticompetitive conduct caused from both within and outside of its borders. However, there is a major gap since Indonesia’s current competition law does not provide KPPU with the jurisdiction to investigate, prosecute or punish violations committed by business actors located outside of Indonesia’s territory. Thus, …
