Background: Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure often complicated by postoperative infections, with Staphylococcus aureus as a key opportunistic pathogen. Rising antibiotic resistance and side effects of conventional antiseptics like chlorhexidine highlight the need for natural alternatives. This study evaluated the antibacterial and antibiofilm potential of 96% ethanol extract from Ziziphus mauritiana leaves against S. aureus.
Methods: The extract was prepared by maceration and tested in vitro using microdilution for minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against S. aureus ATCC 25923. Antibiofilm activity was assessed via crystal violet staining on mature biofilms, with …

Introduction. Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) is a lung parenchyma infection acquired outside of the hospital and is significantly associated with morbidity and mortality rates. Identifying patients with moderate-severe CAP at high risk of mortality through a combination of these variables is expected to serve as a basis for prompt and appropriate intervention, ultimately improving clinical outcomes for CAP patients. This study aimed to develop a scoring system using clinical characteristics, radiological findings, and serum biomarkers to assess the mortality risk in patients with moderate-severe CAP.
Methods. This study employs a retrospective cohort design with moderate-severe CAP patients treated …

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that remains a significant global health problem despite the availability of an effective vaccine. Measles re-emergence is driven by gaps in immunization coverage, waning post-vaccination immunity, and increased population mobility. In adults, measles infection is associated with greater disease severity compared to children. This literature review was conducted by reviewing recent scientific publications addressing the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, management, complications, and prevention of measles, with a focus on the adult population. Measles is caused by an RNA virus of the Paramyxoviridae family and is transmitted through respiratory droplets and aerosols. Typical …

Leprosy remains a public health problem in Indonesia. In 2023, Indonesia ranked third globally in the number of leprosy cases, with 14,376 reported cases, after India (107,851 cases) and Brazil (22,773 cases). One of the key strategies for leprosy control in Indonesia is the implementation of preventive measures, including home visits and the administration of chemoprophylaxis using single-dose rifampicin (SDR). Post-exposure prophylaxis plays an important role in preventing leprosy transmission among contacts of confirmed patients. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of leprosy chemoprophylaxis recipients in the Tirtayasa Public Health Center area during 2023–2024. This study was an descriptive …

Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia
Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a congenital heart defect that causes chronic low oxygen levels, increased right ventricular workload, and a higher risk of complications. Weaning mechanical ventilation in patients with TOF is particularly challenging due to right ventricular dysfunction, muscle weakness, and the risk of heart failure. This study evaluates the use of a spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) strategy with pressure support ventilation (PSV) mode for mechanical ventilation weaning in pediatric patients with TOF. An observational study was conducted on a six-year-old pediatric patient with TOF and a cerebral abscess who underwent mechanical ventilation weaning using the SBT technique …

Staphylococcus aureus is a major Gram-positive pathogen that is increasingly resistant to antibiotics, significantly contributing to antimicrobial resistance (AMR)-related deaths. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the antibacterial activity of calcined chicken eggshell powder (CCEP), a waste-derived material rich in calcium compounds. CCEP was prepared by calcining eggshell powder at 900 °C for 3 hours. Its antibacterial potential was evaluated using in vitro assays, including agar disc diffusion and broth microdilution, as well as in silico molecular docking against penicillin-binding protein 4 (PBP4, PDB ID: 3HUM). The in vitro results showed that a 20% (w/v) CCEP solution in glycerol produced …

Private Sector Healthcare Investment In Indonesia: Leveraging Australia-Indonesia Partnerships For Health System Transformation, Susan Josephine Neuhaus
Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration
Australia and Indonesia are strategic partners with expanding bilateral trade valued at AUD 26.7 billion (2022-23). Health care partnerships between the two countries offer significant opportunities for private sector engagement. Indonesia’s large population, rapidly growing middle class, and implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN) present partnership opportunities to strengthen health system capacity, address infrastructure gaps and workforce shortages, and contribute to shared economic and prosperity goals. This study explores how Australian private healthcare investment can complement government initiatives in supporting Indonesia’s UHC while advancing Australia’s regional engagement. A descriptive qualitative analysis was conducted using …

Antimalarial drug resistance has encouraged various innovations to develop novel drug compounds that are effective, feasible, and safe, adhering to health standards. One way to do that is by observing and predicting the biological activity of drug compounds using quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. In this study, QSAR analysis was conducted on the 4-N-(methyl)-4-aminoquinoline derivatives, which effectively inhibit the growth of Plasmodium falciparum as a source of malaria. The research stages involved molecular structure modeling, molecular geometry optimization using the AM1 semi-empirical method, and QSAR descriptor calculations, including electronic (atomic charges (q), HOMO and LUMO energies, polarizability (α), …

This study examined the risk of Salmonella spp. exposure among chicken farm workers by evaluating occupational health management practices. The probability of exposure was determined by assessing the number of contamination points. Sampling for Salmonella spp. contamination was conducted at 7 and 45 days of chicken batches across five areas, alongside evaluation of worker behaviors to assess exposure risk. Three of the 12 large closed-system farms, each housing >10,000 chickens, were selected. Results indicated that boots were the most contaminated items. Workers generally adhered to habitual boot-wearing, which reduced the risk of exposure. Moderate levels of workers' exposure prevention practices, …

Herbal medicine has become popular worldwide, especially in developing countries, with around 80% of the population opting for herbal treatments. The perceived benefits of natural remedies, such as affordability and fewer side effects, drive this trend. Herbal therapies effectively manage skin diseases, infections, and common ailments. However, the absorption of bioactive compounds in herbal extracts is often limited. Recent developments in nano-based herbal delivery systems, like nanosomal, show promise in enhancing the efficacy of herbal remedies for topical applications, providing improved solubility, stability, and skin penetration. This review describes various nanosomal studies developed and successfully used to enhance the topical …

Obesity is a major risk factor for chronic diseases and early mortality. Although dietary counseling is essential in managing obesity, maintaining a calorie deficit and preventing weight regain remain difficult.
