Thoughts On Music Ethnography In Urban Indonesia: From Yogyakarta Recordings To Translocal Popular Culture In The Melayu Borderlands, Max Richter

Antropologi Indonesia

Previous studies on Indonesian music focused on cultural heritage and traditional preservation or western-style modern music such as pop and rock music. Both were perceived as separate genre, even modern music often downplayed traditional one. The author argues analysis of hybrid genre like keroncong and dangdut would provide more complicated picture than such dichotomy. He explained long history of cultural exchanges in various parts of Indonesia which showed these two genres influenced each other. As a case study the author presents urban music as main character of urban social lives in Indonesia. This article depicts street music and campursari in …

Contestation, Negotiation And Culture In The Reconstruction Of Riau's Identity, Lugina Setyawati

Antropologi Indonesia

This paper explained the issue of inequality which appears in the process of democratization through the analysis of contestation, negotiation, and the reconstruction of Riau’s identity. Ideally, democratic principles respect equality; however, identity expresses inequality because it defines who is dominant and subordinate in a certain social group through ethnic category and gender identity. It separates the insiders and outsiders with different rights through cultural idioms. Moreover, the identity is not merely applied in the private domain, but also in the public sphere. This paper resulted from research conducted in Riau Province in a periode of decentralization process. The findings …

Tradisi, Ekonomi-Politik, Dan Toleransi Yogyakarta, Diatyka Widya Jul 2010

Tradisi, Ekonomi-Politik, Dan Toleransi Yogyakarta, Diatyka Widya

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article aims to illustrate that cultural reproduction is always in the interplay with politic and economic system within societal structure. Therefore, the effort to understand the meaning of cultural symbol has to be accompanied by the attempt to explore the political and economic interests that shape the cultural practices. The Yogyakarta people undoubtedly perceive religion practices as more than cultural practices. The article will demonstrate that dispute in religious matters have never become the main trigger of conflict between religious groups. In most cases, the tension is driven by the clash of political and economic interests between the dominant …

The Performance Of Panggung Bangsawan In Riau Lingga; A Reconstruction Of A Theatrical Process, Sutamat Arybowo

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Panggung Bangsawan is a popular folk theatre in Riau Lingga. The ups and downs in its performance are atributed to changes in social, political, and cultural conditions. This article is a reconstruction of a near extinct Panggung Bangsawan group in the Teluk village in the islands of Riau Lingga. First, I have attempted to describe the staging process; second, to endeavour to understand the phenomenon of change which occurs when a folk tale is transformed from written work into a performance; and third, to expose the transformation of a script (text) divided into scenes into a performance. This is an …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Due to the emergence of what in Indonesian is called industri rekaman daerah 'Indonesian regional recording industries', which has developed significantly since the 1980s, many regional recording companies have been established in Indonesia. As a consequence, more and more aspects of Indonesian regional culture have appeared in commercial recordings. Nowadays commercial cassettes and Video Compact Discs (VCDs) of regional pop and oral literature genres from different ethnic groups are being produced and distributed in provincial and regency towns, even those situated far from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Considering the extensive mediation and commodification of ethnic cultures in Indonesia, this …

Film "Mendadak Dangdut" (2006); Pemahaman Geografi Budaya Dan Identitas, Bayu Kristianto Apr 2009

Film "Mendadak Dangdut" (2006); Pemahaman Geografi Budaya Dan Identitas, Bayu Kristianto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Place has certain connotations that are involved in shaping the identity of an individual or a community. Due to the importance of place or location in identity formation, Cultural Studies has its own area of analysis focusing on the understanding of place, which is cultural geography. Peter Jackson (1989: 23, quoted by Giles and Middleton 1999: 104) defines cultural geography as a study on how cultures are constituted by social practises occurring in certain contexts which are influenced by historical and geographical factors. The discussion of artistic works centred on the role of place in identity formation becomes an interesting …

Keterpenjaraan Perempuan Dalam Ruang Kota Di Dalam "Lost In Translation" (2003) Dan "The Good Girl" (2002), Asri Saraswati

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The urban space offers more challenges to the female self. Two motion pictures, Lost in translation (2003) and The good girl (2002), depict the issue of gender and space by conveying the city as prison for the female characters. This article analyses the urban space and argues that in the two movies, the female characters struggle and eventually create meaning in the urban room. Applying feminism and urban geography in analysing the position of female characters within the city, the paper finds that the two films offer their perception on, and solutions to, the imprisonment of women by the urban …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article addresses the research on media history in Indonesia. The VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) period of the seventeenth/eighteenth century, also known as the early modern period, is regarded as a starting point in this study. It was during this time that printing machines were imported from Europe by the VOC authorities. The availability of paper and printing ink also made it possible for the production of printed matter such as forms, books, and other material. The first known printed media was the Bataviasche Nouvelles, which served as a kind of newspaper. This period saw three types of publishing houses: …

The Status And Function Of English In Indonesia: A Review Of Key Factors, Allan Lauder Jul 2008

The Status And Function Of English In Indonesia: A Review Of Key Factors, Allan Lauder

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

In order to understand the way English is used and seen in Indonesia today, it is useful to know something about how historical, political, socio-cultural and linguistic factors have shaped its status and functions over the last century. The use of English in Indonesia has developed in the context of post-colonial educational competency building, and more recently the need to support development – in particular its role in state education. However, attitudes of some policy makers and commentators towards the language have often been ambivalent, expressing fears of its power to exert negative cultural influences. The special status of English …

Indonesia Dalam Pertautan Budaya Pembangunan Dan Budaya Warga Desa, Ivanovich Agusta Oct 2007

Indonesia Dalam Pertautan Budaya Pembangunan Dan Budaya Warga Desa, Ivanovich Agusta

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The construction of the next imagined-village as a part of the next imagined-Indonesia evokes the need of a new genre on embedding the culture of development and the culture of civil-village. The article presents an "Until-Where" genre (on where the aims of development are reached). In the genre, praxis orientation becomes a context of both cultural analysis and social structure. The deconstructive critique of the culture of development is focused on Kantian humanism, evolutionism and development planning, the politics of space, and capitalization on village development. Co-articulation between the culture of development (which has the tendency for uniformity) and the …

Culture Research In The Recent Work Of Itamar Even-Zohar, Harry Aveling

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Masyarakat Konsumen Sebagai Ciptaan Kapitalisme Global: Fenomena Budaya Dalam Realitas Sosial, Selu Margaretha Kushendrawati

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Global capitalism, which is born in the globalization process, has created consumption culture and consumer society— whose existence is seen just in the differences of their consumption commodities, and on and on consumes the signs and social status that marked on the commodities. In itself, global capitalism has the progressive-power which can help us in our daily live. However, the same progressiveness could bring the world in the unrecoverable and uncontrollable progressiveness. Progressive-power that inherent in the global capitalism has the tendency to lead the world into undetermined, injustice and hegemonic situation. This paper would discover this global capitalism phenomena, …

Secara singkat ada banyak cara untuk melihat karakteristik yang beragam dari hubungan antara penerjemah beserta terjemahannya dan penulisnya

Transisi Budaya Di Bali Dalam Novel Jerman: Wayan Zwischen Drogen Und D Monen, Lilawati Kurnia Apr 2006

Transisi Budaya Di Bali Dalam Novel Jerman: Wayan Zwischen Drogen Und D Monen, Lilawati Kurnia

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Europe has been interested in Indonesia for many centuries ago. The Dutch Government and the East-Indies Company (VOC), for example, already established the connection between Indonesian and German along with the colonization when the VOC brought the German Regiment to the islands of Indonesia. Nevertheless, this relationship was not in a friendly way but was the power one. German also adopted the domination of the colony by the Dutch. Bali as the foremost attraction for the Europe since the 19th century has become a place of destination to the western tourists in the 20th century. The transition of Balinese culture …

Tradisi Lisan, Naskah, Dan Sejarah; Sebuah Catatan Politik Kebudayaan, I Nengah Duija Oct 2005

Tradisi Lisan, Naskah, Dan Sejarah; Sebuah Catatan Politik Kebudayaan, I Nengah Duija

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Tradition can be seen from two different perspectives, those of literacy (writing system) and of oral tradition. Recently, some intellectuals have shown interest in oral tradition as academic study in some universities. Oral tradition is not supposed to be seen merely as part of the past and a cultural entity of no importance. This paper describes the two traditions of oral literature and manuscript writing as a basis for local historical knowledge and records of cultural politics. The discussion will be more about the content of tradition that is related to the history of cultural politics than a historical observation.

Memahami "Cultural Studies" Dan Multikulturalisme Dari Perspektif Pascamodern, Akhyar Yusuf Lubis Oct 2004

Memahami "Cultural Studies" Dan Multikulturalisme Dari Perspektif Pascamodern, Akhyar Yusuf Lubis

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Cultural studies is a study of culture, the paradigm of which is quite different from that of the conventional (i.e. modern) studies. If we accept this view, it means that the whole problem of cultural reality, epistemology, and methodology cannot be used to understand and investigate cultural studies and multiculturalism. The infeasibility of using conventional study of culture to apprehend cultural studies and multiculturalism is related with the principle of incommensurability between those two fields, so there are different worldviews and rules (language games) between the two. This difference is vividly showed in character and model of study that conceives …
