Precision In The Global War On Terror: Inciting Muslims Through The War Of Ideas, Sherifa D. Zuhur Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Never before have Americans paid so much attention to Islam and Muslim ideology. Although efforts have been made to separate mainsteam views from extremist principles, Muslims feel that many of their basic beliefs are under attack in the ongoing war of ideas. The author explores why, surveying a broad swath of accusations and efforts to change Muslim and Islamist ideas and institutions.

Global Climate Change National Security Implications, Carolyn Pumphrey Dr. Apr 2008

Global Climate Change National Security Implications, Carolyn Pumphrey Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

On March 29-31, 2007, the Strategic Studies Institute and the Triangle Institute for Security Studies conducted a colloquium on “Global Climate Change: National Security Implications” held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This volume is based on the proceedings of this conference. Chapter 1 addresses the growing historical awareness of the threat and outlines the science of climate-change. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on how climate change might affect human societies and the degree to which it might cause or exacerbate violence and conflict. Particular attention is paid to the implications for the security of the United States. Chapters 4 and …

Baloch Nationalism And The Geopolitics Of Energy Resources: The Changing Context Of Separatism In Pakistan, Robert J. Wirsing Dr. Apr 2008

Baloch Nationalism And The Geopolitics Of Energy Resources: The Changing Context Of Separatism In Pakistan, Robert J. Wirsing Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author examines the energy context of the simmering Baloch separatist insurgency that has surfaced in recent years in Pakistan’s sprawling Balochistan province. In particular, he looks at how Pakistan’s mounting energy insecurity--a product of rapid increase in demand coupled with rising scarcity and the region’s intensified energy rivalry--has both magnified the economic and strategic importance of this province while at the same time complicating Pakistan’s efforts to cope with the province’s resurgent tribal separatism. The author concludes that Pakistan’s government needs to overhaul its counterinsurgent policies to avoid protracted conflict and to enlist the Baloch as partners in energy …

Drug Intoxicated Irregular Fighters: Complications, Dangers, And Responses, Paul Rexton Kan Dr. Mar 2008

Drug Intoxicated Irregular Fighters: Complications, Dangers, And Responses, Paul Rexton Kan Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The presence of drugged fighters is not unknown in the history of warfare. Yet widespread drug use on the battlefield is now part of protracted conflicts largely fought by nonprofessional combatants that take place in an international system characterized by the process of globalization. From marijuana, khat, hallucinogenic mushrooms, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine to looted pharmaceuticals, irregular fighters have found a ready supply of narcotics to consume for a variety of combat purposes. Such consumption has led to unpredictable fighting, the commission of atrocities, and to the prolongation of internal violence. The presence of intoxicated combatants will continue to be …

Building For The Future: China's Progress In Space Technology During The Tenth 5-Year Plan And The U.S. Response, Kevin Pollpeter Mr. Mar 2008

Building For The Future: China's Progress In Space Technology During The Tenth 5-Year Plan And The U.S. Response, Kevin Pollpeter Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The Chinese government is using space power to increase its influence at home and abroad and hopes to leverage the political, economic, and military benefits of space to become a great power. The ambivalent nature of the U.S.-China relationship, however, assures that over the long term China's rise as a space power will present challenges to the United States. Militarily, China's improved remote sensing capabilities and launch tempos require the U.S. military to prepare to counteract China's use of space in a potential conflict over Taiwan. Commercially, China's lower labor costs and mercantilist approach to space could establish China as …

Projecting Pyongyang: The Future Of North Korea's Kim Jong Il Regime, Andrew Scobell Dr. Mar 2008

Projecting Pyongyang: The Future Of North Korea's Kim Jong Il Regime, Andrew Scobell Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author seeks to assist planners and decisionmakers in thinking about and preparing for possible future contingencies concerning North Korea. He does not dwell on war or conflict scenarios involving North Korea because military planners have already focused considerable effort and attention on these. It is entirely possible that the fate of the country as a political, territorial, and juridical entity is intimately bound up with the fate of the Kim Jong Il regime, but one should not assume this to be so. In other words, the collapse of the Kim regime may not lead to the collapse of North …

The Political Context Behind Successful Revolutionary Movements, Three Case Studies: Vietnam (1955-63), Algeria (1945-62), And Nicaragua (1967-79), Raymond A. Millen Ltc Mar 2008

The Political Context Behind Successful Revolutionary Movements, Three Case Studies: Vietnam (1955-63), Algeria (1945-62), And Nicaragua (1967-79), Raymond A. Millen Ltc

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Following the collapse of the Soviet Empire, the new world order did not bring about a closure of revolutionary warfare. In fact, the Soviet-inspired wars of liberation against imperialism have been eclipsed by reactionary, jihadist wars. By all indications in Afghanistan, Chechnya, Somalia, and Iraq, Islamic militants have embraced revolutionary warfare, although not Mao’s People’s War model. Therefore, a study of revolutionary warfare is apt because the conflict between the West and radical jihadism will continue to take place in dysfunctional, collapsing, or failed states. The author examines the political-military lessons from these conflicts and suggests that the United States …

Transforming To Effects-Based Operations: Lessons From The United Kingdom Experience, Andrew M. Dorman Dr. Jan 2008

Transforming To Effects-Based Operations: Lessons From The United Kingdom Experience, Andrew M. Dorman Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author examines the extent to which the United Kingdom (UK) has transitioned to effects-based operations to ascertain: (1) Areas where the U.S. Army could draw lessons from UK policies; (2) Areas where the U.S. Army and the British Ministry of Defence could develop integrated or complementary approaches and doctrines towards transformation for future alliance/coalition operations; and (3) Implications for the U.S. Army for working with the UK. This monograph is subdivided into four parts. Section 1 is a review of the evolution of British defence policy since the end of the Cold War and evaluates the degree to which …

Jordanian National Security And The Future Of Middle East Stability, W. Andrew Terrill Dr. Jan 2008

Jordanian National Security And The Future Of Middle East Stability, W. Andrew Terrill Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The United States and Jordan have maintained a valuable mutually-supportive relationship for decades as a result of shared interests in a moderate, prosperous, and stable Middle East. In this monograph, the author highlights Jordan’s ongoing value as a U.S. ally and considers ways that the U.S.-Jordanian alliance might be used to contain and minimize problems of concern to both countries. Although Jordan is not a large country, it is an important geographical crossroads within the Middle East and has been deeply involved in many of the most important events in the region’s modern history. In recent years, the importance of …

The Interagency And Counterinsurgency Warfare: Aligning And Integrating Military And Civilian Roles In Stability, Security, Transition, And Reconstruction Operations, Joseph R. Cerami Dr., Jay W. Boggs Mr. Dec 2007

The Interagency And Counterinsurgency Warfare: Aligning And Integrating Military And Civilian Roles In Stability, Security, Transition, And Reconstruction Operations, Joseph R. Cerami Dr., Jay W. Boggs Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

For decades since the formation of the defense establishment under the 1947 National Security Act, all U.S. cabinet departments, national security agencies, and military services involved in providing for the common defense have struggled to overcome differences in policy and strategy formulation, organizational cultures, and even basic terminology. Post-September 11, 2001, international systems, security environments, U.S. military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the greater Global War on Terrorism have confronted civilian policymakers and senior military officers with a complex, fluid battlefield which demands kinetic and counterinsurgency capabilities. This monograph addresses the security, stability, transition, and reconstruction missions that place …

The “People” In The Pla: Recruitment, Training, And Education In China's 80-Year-Old Military, Justin B. Liang Mr., Sarah K. Snyder Dr.

Articles & Editorials

Three conclusions were reached: (1) China’s ideal “new type” of military officer is university educated and possesses the technical competence and physical ability to handle actual combat against a modern, high-tech adversary. (2) Driven by the understanding of the critical and integral role of soldiers to the success of military modernization, China’s professional military education (PME) system is undergoing rapid changes, focusing on science, technology, and the development of leadership skills. (3) Underpinning China’s drive towards a more high-tech military is the concept of “informatization," a sophisticated idea about aligning capabilities and requirements in the face of an increasingly hybridized …
