Northern Eskimo Law Ways And Their Relationship To Contemporary Problems Of "Bush Justice": Some Preliminary Observations On Structure And Function, Arthur E. Hippler, Stephen Conn

Books & monographs

This paper describes the how the basic values, personality, and culture of Northern (Inupiat) Eskimos contribute to attitudes toward conflict and their society’s capacity to resolve conflict. The paper analyzes the influence of Anglo-American agents of change on that capacity and, especially, the legal system and procedures that developed in the post-contact use of the village council to resolve disputes. It discusses the formal intervention of state law through the magisterial system and its interaction with Eskimo law ways that the village council encouraged. A comparison of village councils and magistrate courts points out the apparent success of the councils …

The Reactions Of Barren-Ground Caribou (Rangifer Tarandus Granti) To Simulated Pipeline And Pipeline Crossing Structures At Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, Kenneth N. Child Jun 1973

The Reactions Of Barren-Ground Caribou (Rangifer Tarandus Granti) To Simulated Pipeline And Pipeline Crossing Structures At Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, Kenneth N. Child

Reports and Unpublished Documents

Field data and observational records emphasized three themes for research: a) behavior of individual animals (by sex and age) and groups of caribou (by size and composition) in the vicinity of man-made obstructions, b) reactions of caribou presented with deflection or choice situations, that is, when in proximity to an alternate method of passage over or under the pipelines, and c) reaction of maternal cows and calves when confronting similar structures. The responses of animals on subsequent encounters with the pipelines were studied for insights on the learning ability of caribou to pass beneath or over obstacles.

Some Trends In Non-Native Adaptation In Villages Along The Kobuk And Koyukuk Rivers In Northwest Alaska, Frank J. Keim

Anthropology

Non-Natives living in isolated village settings in Alaska have traditionally been Ignored in anthropological investigations. These non-Natives are the subject of this thesis. It is a preliminary treatment of the adjustments they must make as newcomers to a cultural environment that is at first unfamiliar to them. As a result of these adjustments ,• the newcomers develop a different approach to life, one which includes a blend of elements from both their own culture and that in which they find themselves as strangers. The thesis also briefly discusses these non-Natives as change agents in the modification of the life patterns …

Books & monographs

An outgrowth of the 1970 Bush Justice Conference sponsored by the Alaska Judicial Council, the paper's primary purpose is to help facilitate establishment of more appropriate delivery and administration of legal services for ethnically distinct populations of Alaska.

Effective Teachers Of Indian And Eskimo High School Students, Judith Kleinfield Aug 1972

Effective Teachers Of Indian And Eskimo High School Students, Judith Kleinfield

ISER Reports

The focus of this study is upon analyzing effective and ineffective teachers in terms of their behavior in the classroom, not in terms of their personalities or attitudes. It is suggested that 2 fundamental characteristics distinguish effective from ineffective teachers of American Indian and Eskimo students: (1) a high level of personal warmth, especially warmth communicated nonverbally through facial expression, body distance, and touch; and (2) a high level of active demandingness in the classroom--demandingness expressed as an aspect of the teacher's personal concern for the student, rather than a concern for subject matter. This study also suggests the need …
