Interpreters Perspective On Intercultural Communication, Gulchin F. Seyidova
Interpreters Perspective On Intercultural Communication, Gulchin F. Seyidova
Communication
Although Translation/Interpreting Studies and Intercultural Communication Studies appear to be closely related fields of studies, both seem to have ignored their potential connectedness. In Interpreting Studies, scholars and practitioners have begun to recognize that interpreters have intercultural communication functions and do not simply automatically convey messages across parties. In Intercultural Communication Studies, scholars have neglected examining intercultural communication in the interpreting context. This study explores professional Azerbaijani interpreters' lived experiences of intercultural challenges they face in the interpreting setting to help better understand both the communication processes involved in interpreting, and interpreting as a scene for intercultural communication. Conversational interviews …
Whence These Farmers?: El Pantano Bioarchaeology And The Advent Of Agriculture In West Mexico, Nicholas S. Corduan
Whence These Farmers?: El Pantano Bioarchaeology And The Advent Of Agriculture In West Mexico, Nicholas S. Corduan
Anthropology
This masters thesis in dental anthropology and bioarchaeology examines discrete, non-metric dental data collected from skeletal remains of a Middle Formative era Mexican population at EI Pantano. This site is situated in Jalisco, West Mexico, and represents one of the earliest archaeological examples of transitional agriculture for this area. Materials recovered from the burials suggest that the yet-undiscovered settlement whose people used the cemetery had complex interactions with diverse Mexican groups, including the OImec-linked site of Tlatilco in the Valley of Mexico, and also with groups as far away as Guatemala and the Andes mountains. Phenetic analysis of dental morphology …

How The Devils Went Deaf: Ethnomycology, Cuisine, And Perception Of Landscape In The Russian North, Sveta Yamin-Pasternak
How The Devils Went Deaf: Ethnomycology, Cuisine, And Perception Of Landscape In The Russian North, Sveta Yamin-Pasternak
Anthropology
Arctic tundra is rich mushroom country and a number of high latitude fungi species can potentially be used as food. Different regions often play host to many of the same or similar mushroom varieties. Yet, people's attitudes toward the same mushrooms---and mushrooms in general---vary widely both in temporal and geographical senses. The given work presents a study in ethnomycology---a field of inquiry concerned with human beliefs and practices associated with mushrooms, carried out in the Bering Strait area of Chukotka, Russia. Once avoided by the Native people living on the Russian and American sides of the Bering Strait, wild mushrooms …
Deg Xinag Oral Traditions: Reconnecting Indigenous Language And Education Through Traditional Narratives, Beth R. Leonard
Deg Xinag Oral Traditions: Reconnecting Indigenous Language And Education Through Traditional Narratives, Beth R. Leonard
Indigenous Studies
"Deg Xinag," literally 'local language' is the westernmost of the Athabascan 1 languages. The language area is also referred to as "Deg Hit'an," literally, 'local people'. The Deg Hit'an are often referred to inappropriately in anthropological and linguistic literature as "Ingalik," a Yup'ik word meaning 'lice-infested'. There are currently three villages in western, interior Alaska where this language is spoken and about 20 fluent speakers of this language remaining. As I proceeded through my graduate research I came to understand the significance of indigenous language revitalization in relation to its potential contributions to indigenous and cross-cultural education. These contributions include …
Weapon, Toy, Or Art? The Eskimo Yo-Yo As A Commodified Artic Bola And Marker Of Cultural Identity, Alysa J. Klistoff
Weapon, Toy, Or Art? The Eskimo Yo-Yo As A Commodified Artic Bola And Marker Of Cultural Identity, Alysa J. Klistoff
Anthropology
The Eskimo yo-yo is a popular tourist art found in gift shops across Alaska. It is made in a variety of shapes, ranging from seals and dolls, to mukluks and simple balls. Many are plainly decorated; others display elaborate decorations, fine beadwork, and intricate details. Some shops carry only Native-made pieces, while others carry imitation pieces made in China. Though a true history of the Eskimo yo-yo remains "shrouded in mystery" (Ray 1977), Eskimos maintain that this game originated as an important and widely used hunting tool made simply with sinew and bones---the bola. The gun has replaced the bola …
Six Thousand Years Of Change In The Northeast Pacific: An Interdisciplinary View Of Maritime Ecosystems, Nicole Misarti
Six Thousand Years Of Change In The Northeast Pacific: An Interdisciplinary View Of Maritime Ecosystems, Nicole Misarti
Marine Biology
The goal of this thesis is to develop long-term records of North Pacific ecosystems and explore relationships between change in marine ecosystems and prehistoric Aleut culture through soil chemistry, isotope analyses of lake cores, and isotope analyses of bone from archaeological middens. Chemical analysis of soils yielded differences in soils of various archaeological features as well as middens of varying composition. Sites that had no middens were chemically distinguishable from sites that did have middens helping to define resource consumption in the local region. An important result of this study is that no single ecosystem (nearshore benthic, coastal pelagic or …
The Extent Of Homelessness In The Kenai Peninsula Borough, Meghan Wilson, Marie Lowe
The Extent Of Homelessness In The Kenai Peninsula Borough, Meghan Wilson, Marie Lowe
ISER Reports
In 2007, Love INC asked the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) to conduct a study investigating the characteristics of the homeless population within the boundaries of the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Love INC is currently in the pre-development phase of creating a transitional housing facility on the Kenai Peninsula. ISER conducted phone interviews with relevant agencies serving the Kenai’s homeless population. These interviews yielded demographic information on the homeless population and provided both the current housing status of Kenai homeless and reasons for homelessness today. Men, women, and youth utilize homeless services on the Kenai Peninsula; they are between …

Economic And Social Impacts Of Bsai Crab Rationalization On The Communities Of King Cove, Akutan, And False Pass, Marie Lowe, Gunnar Knapp
ISER Reports
This report examines economic and social impacts of the first two years of crab rationalization on the Aleutians East Borough communities of King Cove, Akutan and False Pass. The study was conducted by the University of Alaska Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) for the Aleutians East Borough (AEB) and the City of King Cove. Crab rationalization resulted in dramatic consolidation in Bering Sea crab fisheries. During the first two years of rationalization, consolidation reduced the number of boats participating in the Bristol Bay Red King Crab fishery and the Bering Sea Snow Crab fishery by about two-thirds. This …

Copper River Salmon Habitat Management Study, Marie Lowe
ISER Reports
In 2006, Ecotrust commissioned the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Alaska Anchorage to conduct a study on land managers’ perceptions of salmon habitat management in the Copper River Watershed (CRW). ISER interviewed 20 managers from 10 organizations representing Federal agencies (BLM, USACE, USFS, USFWS), State of Alaska agencies (ADFG, DEC, DNR) and Alaska Native Corporations (AHTNA, EYAK). The study was conducted to examine managers’ perceptions about the current status of watershed management with regard to health of salmon populations. By interviewing resource managers, the research was conducted to determine threats to salmon habitat and …

Dena'ina Duch'deldih: "We Are Learning Dena'ina," Language Goals And Ideologies Among Adult Learners Of Dena'ina Athabascan, Lindsay A. Bell
Education
The work contained herein consists of two research papers that emerged from a single qualitative study of goals and ideologies of adult learners of Dena'ina Athabascan in attendance at the 2005 Dena'ina Language Institute. The study draws upon 19 semi-structured, in-depth interviews that were collected and analyzed in order to increase community control over the program and to assist in the development of future programming offered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The first research paper suggests that goals of attendees clustered into four categories: fluency, literacy, cultural knowledge, and community building. More important than these four stated goals were …
"Let Us Die Trying": A Post-Colonial Reading Of Velma Wallis, Seth G. Myers
"Let Us Die Trying": A Post-Colonial Reading Of Velma Wallis, Seth G. Myers
English
This essay explores the work of Velma Wallis from the perspective of post-colonial theory. Her works, Two Old Women and Bird Girl and the Man who Followed the Sun are read within this theoretical framework as volatile and resistant texts, in opposition to readings that might limit their meaning as ethnographic or otherwise. I outline the generalities of my theoretical framework with reference to Edward Said and Homi K. Bhabha, before I approach a discussion of Native American literature and Velma Wallis specifically. Within this theoretical framework, I find that Wallis resists, not only generic definition, but the larger structures …

Shadow Networks: Border Economies, Informal Markets, And Organized Crime In Vladivostok And The Russian Far East, Tobias Holzlehner
Shadow Networks: Border Economies, Informal Markets, And Organized Crime In Vladivostok And The Russian Far East, Tobias Holzlehner
Anthropology
The breakdown of the Soviet Union has led to fundamental changes in Russia. New cultural and economic practices emerged out of the fragments of the collapsed state. Exploring economic activities in the Russian Far East at street markets and border crossings, the thesis focuses on new informal economic practices and non-regulated commercial organizations and seeks to understand the emerging roles of entrepreneurs, organized crime, and the state in post-Soviet Russia. The informal, the non-state; the illegal, and the gray in contemporary Russia are the subject of this thesis. Questions at the center of the inquiry are: What are shadow networks, …

Diet And Dental Health In Predynastic Egypt: A Comparison Of Hierakonpolis And Naqada, Tammy Renee Greene
Anthropology
Seven dietary indicators on 364 dentitions of working class Predynastic Egyptians from Hierakonpolis and Naqada are examined in this dissertation. The majority of the samples from both sites date to the Naqada 11 period (3500-3200 BC), during which these were the two main urban centers for Upper Egypt. Both sites are located on the west bank of the Nile approximately 130 km from one-another. The samples consist of adults and juveniles ranging from 6 years to over 50 years of age. The dietary indicators, which include caries, calculus, abscess, periodontal disease, macrowear, microwear, and hypoplastic enamel defects are used to …
Retrospective Analysis Of Marine Biological Data From Port Valdez, Alaska: A Case Study In Long -Term Monitoring, Arny L. Blanchard
Retrospective Analysis Of Marine Biological Data From Port Valdez, Alaska: A Case Study In Long -Term Monitoring, Arny L. Blanchard
Marine Biology
Efforts to understand anthropogenic effects within the Port Valdez study area provide a simple and adaptive model for developing and refining hypotheses to measure the structure of and detect, change in nearshore and benthic habitats. Drivers of change detected by this study are the 1964 Prince William Sound earthquake and the oil transportation and salmon aquaculture industries within the fjord. The study area is a glacial-outwash fjord characterized by strong seasonal and spatial environmental gradients due to glacial influences including seasonally low salinity, high suspended sediment loads, and subsequent high sedimentation rates. Direct and indirect effects from intolerance to low …
