An Odontometric Biodistance Analysis Of The Rong And The A'Chik, Mary Ashley Stough
An Odontometric Biodistance Analysis Of The Rong And The A'Chik, Mary Ashley Stough
Anthropology
Little is known about the population history and genetic affinities of many of the tribal groups of northeastern India, including the Rong and the A'chik. Previous linguistic and genetic studies have suggested that these non-Hindu tribal groups may be descendants of East Asian immigrants. Due to the linguistic and genetic research, cultural differences between the groups, and geographic barriers it was hypothesized that members of these two tribal groups share a population history different from that of ethnic groups of other regions of the subcontinent. This study employs tooth size allocation analysis to test hypotheses concerning the origins of the …
Evaluating Amino Acid Isotopic Biomarkers Of Added Sugar And Animal Protein Intakes, Jessica Jean Johnson
Evaluating Amino Acid Isotopic Biomarkers Of Added Sugar And Animal Protein Intakes, Jessica Jean Johnson
Biological Sciences
Diet is an important risk factor for chronic disease, but identifying precise relationships between diet and disease remains challenging because of the high error in self-reported dietary measurements. Objective biomarkers of diet can help account for this error. Natural abundance amino acid carbon isotopes ratios (AA CIRs) and nitrogen isotope ratios (AA NIRs) are candidate biomarkers of multiple dietary intakes in the US, due to their natural variation in the diet. In this dissertation, I evaluate whether AA CIRs and AA NIRs are sensitive and specific biomarkers of intakes, such as added sugar and animal protein, in the context of …
From Colonization To Conservation: Examining Representations Of Nonhuman Arctic Animals In British Children's Literature During The Long Nineteenth Century, Hannah Ney
Arctic and Northern Studies
This paper examines the impact of British children's literature on shaping attitudes toward the Arctic and its nonhuman animals during the long nineteenth century. As the British renewed their interest in the Arctic, authors used children's literature to convey imperial ambitions and shape beliefs about the region. Using an ecocritical lens, this analysis demonstrates that the crafting of nonhuman animal portrayals helped shape children's beliefs about the Arctic and its role in the British Empire. The literature showcased illustrates a significant shift in British attitudes toward the human-environment relationship, moving from exploration to exploitation to protection. Early exploration narratives introduced …
Coastal Hazard Analyses And Projections For Arctic Alaska Communities, Richard M. Buzard
Coastal Hazard Analyses And Projections For Arctic Alaska Communities, Richard M. Buzard
Geosciences
Storms and a changing climate can cause disasters for coastal communities. This is particularly felt in the Arctic, where temperatures are rising faster than the global average and sea ice decline has led to a longer open-water period when storms can make landfall. Communities in western and northern Alaska have experienced decades of frequent flooding and erosion. Climate change is a significant contributor today and for the future, but the current prevalence of disaster loss is more closely related to the continued development within hazard-prone areas. This dissertation maps areas prone to erosion and flooding to provide decision-making products for …
Societal Structure, Family, And Masculinity In The Bildungsroman: An Analysis Of The Great Santini And Portnoy's Complaint, Aaron Salzman
Societal Structure, Family, And Masculinity In The Bildungsroman: An Analysis Of The Great Santini And Portnoy's Complaint, Aaron Salzman
English
This thesis considers the idea of Becoming as presented in post-World War II American novels. As a model, the Hero's Journey is presented as a structure in which an individual can achieve freedom and satisfaction through discipline ,according to internal psychological forces in combination with external narratives. In the body of this piece, I present two narratives: Ben Meechum's successful journey to adulthood under the cruel tutelage of his father, and Alex Portnoy's journey to an unstable adulthood after choosing a life different from what was modeled by his overbearing parents, who followed strict cultural rules. By comparing a successful …
Chukchi Communities Of The Bering Strait Region, A Hundred Years After Bogoras, Eduard Zdor
Chukchi Communities Of The Bering Strait Region, A Hundred Years After Bogoras, Eduard Zdor
Anthropology
The Chukchi are the Indigenous people of the farthest northeastern part of Eurasia, nowadays called Chukotka. It happens that, at the dawn of the 20th century, Chukchi culture became the focus of a landmark publication The Chukchee, authored by a luminary Russian ethnographer Waldemar Bogoras. Produced as part of the special series Publications of the Jesup North Pacific Expedition, this voluminous monograph, overwhelmingly, continues to be a go-to resource to learn about the Chukchi customs, spiritual beliefs, material culture, and way of life. As an Indigenous Chukchi scholar who, to my knowledge, is the first of my people to be …

Summit
A Note from the Writing Specialist: Last year’s edition of Summit was the first time the Writing Center released a physical copy of the journal, and we are so excited to offer you another one for 2022/2023. For Summit’s forward last year, I wrote about how proud I was of the writing tutors who put this journal together and of all the UAS students they serve. Not much has changed on that front, except that I am somehow even more proud of what these students have accomplished and what I know they are capable of going forward. Every year, they …

Sled Dogs As Gifts. An Ethnography Of Dog Exchanges Among Kennels In Alaska., Allison K. Cruz
Sled Dogs As Gifts. An Ethnography Of Dog Exchanges Among Kennels In Alaska., Allison K. Cruz
Anthropology
This thesis investigates the social relationships that develop through the circulation of sled dogs among Alaskan kennels. It is based on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork at racing events, in sled dog kennels, as well as semi-structured interviews around Fairbanks. The research is informed by anthropological literature on kinship, personhood, and gift-giving economies. It examines how sled dogs are acquired and exchanged in Alaska and offers a novel perspective on the value of dog bloodlines and the relationships that unite breeders, mushers and sled dogs. The main argument is that Alaskan sled dogs are exchanged as gifts (rather than commodities) with the …
Look North Tokyo: Japanese Business In Post-World War Ii Alaska, Pierce A. Bateman
Look North Tokyo: Japanese Business In Post-World War Ii Alaska, Pierce A. Bateman
Arctic and Northern Studies
Since the early 1950s, Alaska and Japan have engaged in both economic and cultural exchanges that have made lasting impacts on the 49th State. For the nearly 75-year-long relationship, Japan was Alaska's number one trade partner by the measure of its exports, worth at its height in 1992, well over $3 billion. From products like timber, fish, and natural gas, Alaska had the raw resources that Japan lacked, while Japan had the industrial economy that Alaska needed. Diminishing public and scholarly interest of Alaska-Japan relations, however, has resulted in the neglect of this recent period of Alaska's economic and diplomatic …

Marine Debris In The Bering Sea: Combining Historical Records, Toxicology, And Local Knowledge To Assess Impacts And Identify Solutions, Veronica M. Padula
Fisheries
Marine debris, particularly plastic marine debris, has numerous impacts on the environment, wildlife, and human communities. This research examines dimensions of marine debris in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, Alaska, including impacts of marine debris pollution on wildlife and the environment; the history of marine debris research, monitoring, and cleanup activities; and community perspectives on local to global solutions. The first chapter of this dissertation is an integrative literature review to better understand the current status of marine debris knowledge in the Bering Sea region and identify critical knowledge gaps. We synthesized the depth and breadth of research, monitoring, …

Emerging Themes And Future Directions Of Multi-Sector Nexus Research And Implementation, Jennifer Schmidt
Emerging Themes And Future Directions Of Multi-Sector Nexus Research And Implementation, Jennifer Schmidt
ISER Articles
Water, energy, and food are all essential components of human societies. Collectively, their respective resource systems are interconnected in what is called the “nexus”. There is growing consensus that a holistic understanding of the interdependencies and trade-offs between these sectors and other related systems is critical to solving many of the global challenges they present. While nexus research has grown exponentially since 2011, there is no unified, overarching approach, and the implementation of concepts remains hampered by the lack of clear case studies. Here, we present the results of a collaborative thought exercise involving 75 scientists and summarize them into …
A Framework For Assessing Food-Energy-Water Security: A Few Case Studies From Rural Alaska, Jennifer Schmidt
A Framework For Assessing Food-Energy-Water Security: A Few Case Studies From Rural Alaska, Jennifer Schmidt
ISER Articles
Food, energy, and water (FEW) are basic needs for well-being and quality of life. Assessing FEW security allows residents, communities, and policy makers to make informed decisions about how to sustain and improve well-being. We have developed a FEW security assessment framework that examines four components of security: availability, access, quality, and preference. With the help of local community members, we interviewed 114 households in three rural Alaska communities to assess FEW security, drivers and outcomes of FEW security, and potential interactions among FEW components and with renewable energy (RE) developments. While FEW security was high overall, preference and quality, …

Friday, July 9, 2027, will be the 100-year anniversary of the raising of the Alaska flag designed by seventh grade student Benny Benson. Top 8% of US state flag designs. Only US state flag designed by a Native American. Youngest designer. Indentured #217. Orphan. Poorest. “Inmate.” Only US state flag designer alive when the flags were flown to the Moon. As we prepare for the 100-year anniversary, what do know about Benny - as opposed to assume? We assumed that Benny was age 13 when he won the Alaska flag contest in 1927; history books said so. We assumed that …

Communities want to determine their own climate change adaptation strategies, and scientists and decision-makers should listen to them — both the equity and efficacy of climate change adaptation depend on it. We outline key lessons researchers and development actors can take to support communities and learn from them.
Northern Dene Astronomical And Sky-Related Knowledge: A Comparative Anthropological Study, Chris M. Cannon
Northern Dene Astronomical And Sky-Related Knowledge: A Comparative Anthropological Study, Chris M. Cannon
Anthropology
The sky and its contents are routinely overlooked in Northern Dene ethnology as a meaningful part of linguistic and cultural knowledge. However, more than 11 years of primary fieldwork learning with and from elders, speakers, and culture bearers from 12 Northern Dene groups across 32 communities in Alaska and Canada has shown that astronomical knowledge is deeply rooted in both practical and sacred ways of knowing. With a focus on detail and breadth, this comparative ethnological study utilized an experience-based approach to investigate the ways in which Northern Dene Peoples perceive, conceptualize, and integrate the sky and its contents into …
Rooted In Environmental Justice: Phytogeography And Ethnoecology Of Serianthes, Else Demeulenaere
Rooted In Environmental Justice: Phytogeography And Ethnoecology Of Serianthes, Else Demeulenaere
Biological Sciences
Serianthes Benth. (Fabaceae) is one of the most endangered plant genera in the world, with 12 of the 18 species listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Serianthes trees are culturally important to island communities of the Indo-Pacific region for canoes, boats, traditional houses, and medicine. Habitat loss and ecosystem degradation increased pressure on these trees, also threatening its Indigenous cosmology and traditional practices. This interdisciplinary study integrated genomic, biogeographic and ethnoecological approaches to develop appropriate policies that protect the Indigenous biocultural diversity of Serianthes. Phylogenomics of 401 nuclear exons and non-coding flanking regions using both a multi-species …

Guide To Sources For The Study Of The 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act: Volume 2 Bibliography, Sue Sherif, Joan Antonson
AHS ANCSA Committee
The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (43 USC 1601-1624) -- Public Law 92-203, approved December 18, 1971 (85 Stat. 688) has been the subject of a number of bibliographies compiled since the act was passed in 1971. They include stand-alone publications and ones that are in published books about the act. The bibliography that follows was initiated for commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the passage of the landmark legislation, especially to add sources published since the 40th anniversary and to be helpful for a researcher initiating a study. The first publications generally provided background historical context and summarized the …

Meals In The Melting-Pot: Immigration And Dietary Change In Diversifying Cities, Nicola Frances Rule, Colin Charles Dring, Thomas F. Thornton
Faculty, Staff, and Students
Changes in diets and food practices have implications for personal and planetary health. As these implications have become more apparent, dietary change interventions that seek to promote healthy and sustainable transitions have proliferated, and the processes and drivers of dietary change have come under increasing scrutiny. In particular, dietary acculturation has been recognised as a driver of dietary change in the context of immigration to expanding, cosmopolitan cities. However, research has largely focused on changes in the diets of immigrants and ethnic minorities. In contrast, this study contributes to our understanding of the process of dietary acculturation among the largest …

Anthropology
Utilizing Peircean semiotics and Dell Hymes' Ethnography of Communication, this research analyzes the dance style known as Roman havasi or, Turkish Roman dance. Elements and influences under consideration include costuming, dance vocabulary, musical instruments and traditions, gender-based stylistic differences, spheres of performance, audience member and participant demographics, and notions of authenticity in embodiment and presentation. An abridged history of the Roman is also presented, including public policies that influence the rights and lifestyle of Turkish Roman, as such factors have influenced their sense of social belonging as well as their dance and musical expressions. Romani people have experienced marginalization wherever …
Apple Production Potential In Interior Alaska Within A State Of Amplified Climatic Change, Justin Hogrefe
Apple Production Potential In Interior Alaska Within A State Of Amplified Climatic Change, Justin Hogrefe
Natural Resources
Successful apple (Malus Domestica) tree and fruit growing have been ongoing in Alaska for over 100 years. At the outset, crabapples were the only varieties produced, but as agriculturalists, orchardists, and farmers began to experiment with grafting coldhardy rootstock with scions, new cultivars began to emerge, with varying degrees of success, throughout the state. In addition to experimental cultivars, the climate began to change, with an overall warming trend emerging. Together these variables could be the winning combination to large-scale apple orchards being started in the state of Alaska. More fruit production in the state would strengthen both the small …
Human Paleoecology From The Late Glacial To Early Holocene, Tangle Lakes, Alaska, Audra J. Darcy
Human Paleoecology From The Late Glacial To Early Holocene, Tangle Lakes, Alaska, Audra J. Darcy
Anthropology
This study examines paleoenvironmental change from the Late Glacial to the Early Holocene in the Tangle Lakes region of interior Alaska to explore changes in resource distribution and impacts on prehistoric hunter-gatherer subsistence patterns in upland settings (>500 masl). In interior Alaska, prehistoric hunter-gatherer subsistence economies were organized around the procurement of large herbivores (bison, caribou, elk, and moose), which were primarily regulated by habitat availability. Changes in habitat availability altered the distribution of key faunal resources, necessitating shifts in land-use strategies. The palaeoecological record from Glacier Gap helps contextualize resource distribution within dynamic landscapes by identifying changes in …

Taking A Stand On Not Taking A Stand: Media Bias In The Online Reporting Of Covid-19, Kyle Johnson
Communication
This thesis was written to examine the digital communication strategies of three major news organizations when reporting on COVID-19 in the U.S. for bias. The research looked at social media posts, online article counts and themes, main websites of each organization and audio/visual broadcast segments from all three organizations posted online. This research used an advocacy approach, examining the tension between entertainment and journalism ethics by holding news organizations to journalism standards to see how they compare. Results showed that NPR and Fox News produced more online articles than MSNBC and linked to their own articles on twitter more. The …
