Comparative Analysis Of Spring Flood Risk Reduction Measures In Alaska, United States And The Sakha Republic, Russia, Yekaterina Yevgenevna Kontar, Екатерина Евгеньевна Контарь
Comparative Analysis Of Spring Flood Risk Reduction Measures In Alaska, United States And The Sakha Republic, Russia, Yekaterina Yevgenevna Kontar, Екатерина Евгеньевна Контарь
Geosciences
River ice thaw and breakup are an annual springtime phenomena in the North. Depending on regional weather patterns and river morphology, breakups can result in catastrophic floods in exposed and vulnerable communities. Breakup flood risk is especially high in rural and remote northern communities, where flood relief and recovery are complicated by unique geographical and climatological features, and limited physical and communication infrastructure. Proactive spring flood management would significantly minimize the adverse impacts of spring floods. Proactive flood management entails flood risk reduction through advances in ice jam and flood prevention, forecasting and mitigation, and community preparedness. With the goal …

Book Clubs In The Esl Classroom: A Microinteractional Analysis Of Literacy Development In Adult Esl Students, Sharon E. Johnson
Book Clubs In The Esl Classroom: A Microinteractional Analysis Of Literacy Development In Adult Esl Students, Sharon E. Johnson
English
This study uses conversation analysis to identify literacy development in adult ESL classroom book club discussions. The investigation focuses on the interactions of three university students participating in a six-week book club about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The longitudinal microethnographic analysis reveals the students' development of interactional routines for enacting topic transitions. Two student strategies are examined: (a) the development of a group routine for reading discussion questions aloud; and (b) the use of the transition markers okay and next. The students' establishment of these strategies during the six meetings provides evidence of literacy development during classroom book …
Transboundary Agreement: Case Studies Of Marine Mammal Management In The Bering Strait, Kelsey B. Aho
Transboundary Agreement: Case Studies Of Marine Mammal Management In The Bering Strait, Kelsey B. Aho
Arctic and Northern Studies
The effectiveness of a state's natural resource management is rendered meaningless if the particular resource migrates into another state's jurisdiction. In the case of marine mammals, inadequate management of the species anywhere along their annual migration could make food insecure for the regional human populations. My research evaluates to what extent International Environmental Agreements have been able to manage transboundary challenges to food security. Two case studies, the Polar Bear Agreement (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 2000) and the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (International Whaling Commission, 1946), are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively using Ronald Mitchell's four factors …
For Generations To Come: Exploring Local Fisheries Access And Community Viability In The Kodiak Archipelago, Danielle J. Ringer
For Generations To Come: Exploring Local Fisheries Access And Community Viability In The Kodiak Archipelago, Danielle J. Ringer
Fisheries
The sustainability of fisheries and fishing-dependent communities depends upon numerous political, cultural, economic, and ecological factors. My research explores a key threat to this sustainability in Alaska -- the graying of the commercial fishing fleet. As current fishermen approach retirement age and a decreasing number of young people obtain ownership level careers in Alaska's fisheries, succession impacts become an increasingly pressing issue. This research utilized a political ecology framework and mixed methods ethnography, including 70 semi-structured interviews and 609 student surveys, to study local fisheries access and community viability in the Kodiak Archipelago communities of Kodiak City, Old Harbor, and …

Resilience To Capitalism, Resilience Through Capitalism: Indigenous Communities, Industrialization, And Radical Resilience In Arctic Alaska, Kevin C. Hillmer-Pegram
Resilience To Capitalism, Resilience Through Capitalism: Indigenous Communities, Industrialization, And Radical Resilience In Arctic Alaska, Kevin C. Hillmer-Pegram
Interdisciplinary Studies
A large and expanding body of scientific evidence shows that the Arctic is experiencing rapid social-ecological changes. Arctic stewardship is a framework for governance that is based on the principles of resilience thinking and is gaining prominence in both academic and political settings. However, critical scholars have indicted resilience thinking for failing to adequately comprehend the social dimensions of social-ecological systems. Resilience, therefore, remains a problematic theoretical foundation on which to base governance. The aim of this dissertation is to improve resilience thinking so that it can overcome its demonstrated shortcomings and thereby contribute to improved Arctic governance. I propose …
Not Just Small Potatoes: A Comparison Of Four Agricultural Education Models In Alaska, Annie Silverman
Not Just Small Potatoes: A Comparison Of Four Agricultural Education Models In Alaska, Annie Silverman
Communication
Agricultural education is a means of increasing food security, increasing willingness to try new fruits and vegetables, improving test scores, and increasing community resiliency. School gardens, which are one form of agricultural education, are the primary focus of this thesis. In order to identify barriers to maintaining school garden programs, semi-structured interviews were conducted at four school sites in the Fairbanks area. In order to compare emerging themes from the interview data in the Fairbanks area to school sites throughout the state, a survey was also administered through Survey Monkey to schools that received the Alaska state Farm to School …
Sex Estimation In Forensic Anthropology: A Test Of The Klales Et Al. (2012) Method With Implications Of Asymmetry, Sandra J. Call
Sex Estimation In Forensic Anthropology: A Test Of The Klales Et Al. (2012) Method With Implications Of Asymmetry, Sandra J. Call
Anthropology
A sample of 204 American individuals was examined to assess the accuracy and reliability of the three non-metric traits described by Phenice (1969) and revised by Klales et al. (2012) for assigning sex. In addition, the bilateral stability of the three non-metric traits was assessed to determine if asymmetrical expression of the traits compromises the classification accuracy of the revised method, since a prior study found that application of Phenice’s original technique yielded low classification accuracy when applied to the right innominate. Klales and colleagues claimed that expansion of the classification system from a dichotomous present/absent scale into five character …
Ancient Celts: Myth, Invention Or Reality? Dental Affinities Among Continental And Non- Continental Celtic Groups, Mallory J. Anctil
Ancient Celts: Myth, Invention Or Reality? Dental Affinities Among Continental And Non- Continental Celtic Groups, Mallory J. Anctil
Anthropology
Dental anthropological study of the proto-Celts, and continental and non-continental Celtic tribes during the Iron Age, particularly its applicability in estimating biological affinities of these tribes, has been generally overlooked. The present study helps fill the gap in the current understanding of these groups in several ways. First, 36 morphological traits in 125 dentitions from four regional samples, representing the proto-Celts, the continental and non-continental Celts, along with a comparative European Iron Age sample, were recorded and analyzed. Frequencies of occurrence for each dental and osseous nonmetric trait were recorded for each sample. Second, the suite of traits was then …

CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
This course provides an overview of the key national and international funding agencies. The essential information that is commonly required by funding agencies is reviewed and explored section-by- section. Students will practise writing sections of a mock proposal and will receive feedback about what works and what doesn’t in grant applications. Ethical and intellectual property issues are discussed and we examine the requirements for carrying out effective projects consistent with community protocols.

Project Planning, Margaret Florey
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
This workshop provides a sound foundation in project planning and development. It is aimed primarily at those people who are relatively new to planning language projects. Over four sessions, participants will identify the project goals and objectives, proposed outcomes, the target audience, and the project team members and their skills and roles. They will map out the activities and projected timeline together with a preliminary implementation plan. We will explore strategic plans and look at how each step of a project fits strategically into wider goals for the language. We consider ethical issues, community protocols and regulations that need to …

Ethnography In Language Documentation And Revitalization, Sarah Shulist, Faun Rice
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
This workshop will focus on training participants to use ethnographic methodologies in the development and implementation of projects for both language documentation and revitalization. The target audience includes community linguists and academic linguists with an intermediate to advanced level of knowledge about language programs, but without any extensive training in anthropology and ethnography. The goal is to provide this group of language activists with an additional set of tools for use in enhancing the efficacy and comprehensiveness of their documentary and revitalization work.

Documentation Of Orature, Imelda Udoh, Uwemedimo Iwoketok
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
Orature is an amalgamation of two words: oral and literature. It depicts the creative impulse of the society it evolves from. This artistic expression includes proverbs, riddles, extemporized poems/songs, folktales, childlore, etc. The general observation is that attention has been given to aspects of Orature by adults almost to the exclusion of children’s artistic expression. There is no doubt that some aspects of our collective Orature has been put in print. However, much more is yet to be documented. It is also often not considered that both adults and children draw their experiences from the same setting, they employ the …

CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
Given the widely recognized danger the world’s languages face at the present time, there has been a major expansion of language documentation and linguistic description, which requires what has been traditionally referred to as linguistic fieldwork. We generally prepare our students to undertake this work through field methods courses but “[w]hile we generally do a very thorough job of teaching how to elicit and analyze data, we often forget to tell them that there is a personal and practical side to fieldwork that can very well derail their research if they are not prepared for it.” (Macauley, 2004:194). The overall …

Spatial Visualization And Language Documentation, Kristine Hildebrandt
Spatial Visualization And Language Documentation, Kristine Hildebrandt
CoLang 2016 Workshop Syllabuses
Maps and atlases (collections of maps) can be an important and extremely useful part of the toolkit for examining and interpreting variation and change in language documentation and in projects aimed at maintenance, promotion or revitalization. They allow for orderly and illuminating generalizations to be drawn from often unruly distributions of patterns. They also allow for a birds-eye view of patterns across large populations or large geographic and temporal spaces. Although maps cannot tell the whole story behind languages and varieties, they are one way in which we can provide context or approach explanation for interesting or unexpected patterns or …
