Notes From A Lecture On Midwifery By Dr. William Shippen, Jr. April 7, 1798; And Clinical Notes From The Pennsylvania Hospital, December 1799-February 1800, Uriah Derickson
Medical Student and Faculty Lecture Notes
This notebook was written by student Uriah Derickson at Pennsylvania Hospital. The notebook includes notes from a lecture on Midwifery by Dr. William Shippen, Jr. that were taken on April 7, 1798. Shippen was a professor of Anatomy and Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital from 1774-1806. He pioneered courses in midwifery despite opposition, and warned against the use of instruments in childbirth (Penn University Archives & Records Center). The notebook also contains clinical notes written at the Pennsylvania Hospital under the direction of Dr. Benjamin Rush and Dr. Philip Syng Physick. The notebook mentions that on February 26, …
