Osteoarthritis Associated With Estrogen Deficiency., Jorge A Roman-Blas, Santos Castañeda, Raquel Largo, Gabriel Herrero-Beaumont Jan 2009

Osteoarthritis Associated With Estrogen Deficiency., Jorge A Roman-Blas, Santos Castañeda, Raquel Largo, Gabriel Herrero-Beaumont

Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects all articular tissues and finally leads to joint failure. Although articular tissues have long been considered unresponsive to estrogens or their deficiency, there is now increasing evidence that estrogens influence the activity of joint tissues through complex molecular pathways that act at multiple levels. Indeed, we are only just beginning to understand the effects of estrogen deficiency on articular tissues during OA development and progression, as well as on the association between OA and osteoporosis. Estrogen replacement therapy and current selective estrogen receptor modulators have mixed effectiveness in preserving and/or restoring joint tissue in OA. Thus, a …

Over the past three years (2006-2008), the medical/health and public health communities have shown a growing interest in using online 3D virtual worlds like Second Life® (http://secondlife.com/) for health education, community outreach, training and simulations purposes. 3D virtual worlds are seen as the precursors of ‘Web 3D’, the next major iteration of the Internet that will follow in the coming years. This paper provides a tour of several flagship Web 3D experiences in Second Life®, including Play2Train Islands (emergency preparedness training), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—CDC Island (public health), Karuna Island (AIDS support and information), Tox Town …

Predicting Length Of Treatment For Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome In Methadone-Exposed Neonates., Neil S. Seligman, Nicole Salva, Edward J. Hayes, Kevin C. Dysart, Edward C. Pequignot, Jason K. Baxter Oct 2008

Predicting Length Of Treatment For Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome In Methadone-Exposed Neonates., Neil S. Seligman, Nicole Salva, Edward J. Hayes, Kevin C. Dysart, Edward C. Pequignot, Jason K. Baxter

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to identify maternal variables predicting length of treatment for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).

STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of infants treated for NAS during 2000-2006 whose mothers were on methadone maintenance at delivery. Mixed-effects linear regression was used to examine the interaction of maternal and neonatal variables with length of treatment.

RESULTS: Of 204 neonates born to methadone exposed mothers, the average dose at delivery was 127 mg daily (25-340 mg) with median length of treatment 32 days (1-122 days). Trimester of initial exposure (P = .33), methadone dose at …

Case Report: Signal Drop On Mra Imaging Of The Internal Carotid Artery After Neuroform Stent Placement, Aditya S. Pandey Md, Meryl A. Severson Iii Md, Robert H. Rosenwasser Md

JHN Journal

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is an important tool in evaluating the patency of vessels which have previously been stented. Neuroform stents (Boston Scientific, Natick, MA, U.S.A.) are utilized to provide a scaffold across the neck of an aneurysm. These stents are synthesized from Nitinol (nickel and titanium) and thus cause minimal distortion upon imaging with MRA. Patients who have undergone Neuroform stent assisted coiling of aneurysms are routinely followed with MRA to delineate stenosis of the stented segment of vessel as well as recurrence of the aneurysms. While numerous reports show that Neuroform stents do not lead to MRA imaging …

Whiplash: Diagnosis, Treatment, And Associated Injuries., Sanjay Yadla, John K. Ratliff, James Harrop

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

STUDY DESIGN: Focused review of the current literature.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and synthesize the most current data pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of whiplash and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD), and to report on whiplash-related injuries.

METHODS: A search of OVID Medline (1996-January 2007) and the Cochrane database of systematic reviews was performed using the keywords whiplash and WAD. Articles under subheadings for pathology, diagnosis, treatment, and epidemiology were chosen for review after identification by the authors.

RESULTS: A total of 485 articles in the English language literature were identified. Thirty-six articles pertained to the diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology of whiplash, and …

Continuous Source Of Care Among Young Underserved Children: Associated Characteristics And Use Of Recommended Parenting Practices., Esther K Chung, Leny Mathew, Kelly F Mccollum, Irma T Elo, Jennifer F Culhane

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to 1) assess sociodemographic and health characteristics associated with having a continuous source of care (CSOC) among young children and 2) determine the relationship between having a CSOC and use of parenting practices.

METHODS: We conducted a prospective, community-based survey of women receiving prenatal care at Philadelphia community health centers. We conducted surveys at the first prenatal visit and at a mean age +/- standard deviation of 3 +/-1, 11 +/- 1, and 24 +/- 2 months postpartum, obtaining information on sociodemographic and health characteristics, child's health care provider, and 6 parenting practices. …

Hiv-1 Tat And Aids-Associated Cancer: Targeting The Cellular Anti-Cancer Barrier?, Giuseppe Nunnari, Johanna A Smith, René Daniel Jan 2008

Hiv-1 Tat And Aids-Associated Cancer: Targeting The Cellular Anti-Cancer Barrier?, Giuseppe Nunnari, Johanna A Smith, René Daniel

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is accompanied by a significant increase in the incidence of neoplasms. Several causative agents have been proposed for this phenomenon. These include immunodeficiency and oncogenic DNA viruses and the HIV-1 protein Tat. Cancer in general is closely linked to genomic instability and DNA repair mechanisms. The latter maintains genomic stability and serves as a cellular anti-cancer barrier. Defects in DNA repair pathway are associated with carcinogenesis. This review focuses on newly discovered connections of the HIV-1 protein Tat, as well as cellular co-factors of Tat, to double-strand break DNA repair. We propose that the Tat-induced …

Short-Wavelength Light Sensitivity Of Circadian, Pupillary, And Visual Awareness In Humans Lacking An Outer Retina, Farhan H. Zaidi, Joseph T. Hull, Stuart N. Peirson, Katharina Wulff, Daniel Aeschbach, Joshua J. Gooley, George C. Brainard, Kevin Gregory-Evans, Joseph F. Rizzo Iii, Charles A. Czeisler, Russell G. Foster, Merrick J. Moseley, Steven W. Lockley

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

As the ear has dual functions for audition and balance, the eye has a dual role in detecting light for a wide range of behavioral and physiological functions separate from sight. These responses are driven primarily by stimulation of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs) that are most sensitive to short-wavelength ( approximately 480 nm) blue light and remain functional in the absence of rods and cones. We examined the spectral sensitivity of non-image-forming responses in two profoundly blind subjects lacking functional rods and cones (one male, 56 yr old; one female, 87 yr old). In the male subject, we found …
