The United States has an ever-increasing older adult population, with nearly one-fifth of US citizens over the age of 65 (United States Census Bureau, 2022). America is already in need of nurses trained to work with aging patients and that need is only expected to grow. Many registered nurses (RNs) choose specialties other than gerontological care, with only approximately four percent of RNs currently working in long-term care facilities or retirement or nursing homes (Smiley et al., 2021). Center on Aging webpage displaying winning photographs in the "FRAME: Focus on Real Aging in Maine contest." Amateur and professional photographers of all ages submitted 82 photos celebrating the lives of older Mainers. The photos far exceeded expectations in their quality and in the depiction of the diversity of older people's lives and contributions to Maine towns, economic vitality, and way of life.

Carbonell, assistant secretary for Aging in the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, will be at the University of Maine on Friday Oct. 18 [2002] to announce three grants to be used for the development of a National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Action Plan. The UMaine Center on Aging, in conjunction with the Maine Center for Osteoporosis Research and Education in Bangor, will receive one of those grants.
