Behavioral Outcomes Of Home-Based Services For Children And Adolescents With Serious Emotional Disorders, Edwin Morris, Lourdes Suarez, John C. Reid Jan 1997

Behavioral Outcomes Of Home-Based Services For Children And Adolescents With Serious Emotional Disorders, Edwin Morris, Lourdes Suarez, John C. Reid

Journal of Family Strengths

The current study evaluates the effectiveness of an intensive home-based treatment program, Families First, on the behaviors of children and adolescents suffering from mental disorders and being at risk for out-ofi home placement. The sample included 85 youngsters and their families from a semi-rural community. The Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents-Revised (DICA-R) was administered to the children, and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was completed by a parent at pretreatment and posttreatment. The families participated in a 4-6 week, intensive home intervention where crisis intervention, social support services, and needed psychological services were offered. The results indicated that both …

A Model For Family Preservation Case Assessment, Kam-Fong Manit Cheung, Patrick Leung, Sharon Alpert

Journal of Family Strengths

The outcomes of family preservation practice have been researched and debated. The effectiveness of family preservation is still inconclusive and many of the findings may only be inferred to specific situations. Few studies have addressed the assessment techniques or outcome factors from a qualitative perspective. This article synthesizes current literature, research and practice, and proposes a practice framework with questioning techniques to assist practitioners in assessing the strengths and characteristics of a family, and making decisions on whether or not familybased services are appropriate for the family. Two actual cases are presented to illustrate how the worker can benefit from …

A Multi- Faceted, Intensive Family Preservation Program Evaluation, Michael Raschick

Journal of Family Strengths

This evaluation of a county intensive family preservation services (ifps) program makes several important methodological contributions to assessing post-treatment placement patterns of ifps clients. It is the first published ifps evaluation that utilizes an interval-level, overall measure of restrictiveness of placement, and one of the few that has followed placement patterns for a full two-years after treatment. The study is also a good example of complementing placement data with measures of family health and stability, and with qualitative feedback from former ifps clients. Finally, this study demonstrates the potential for doing methodologically sound evaluations of local ifps programs.

Conceptual Bases Of The Planning Process In Family Preservation/Family Support State Plans, June Lloyd Jan 1997

Conceptual Bases Of The Planning Process In Family Preservation/Family Support State Plans, June Lloyd

Journal of Family Strengths

Congress and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) intend for the Family Preservation and Support Act of 1993 (P.L. 103-66) to catalyze major reforms in state human services systems. DHHS and numerous other institutions developed conceptual and procedural guidance for the states' planning processes. Review of the planning dimensions of participation and expertise reveals that major emphases on stakeholder participation and technical planning processes obscure the need for expertise in family preservation and family support.

What's Working In Family-Based Services--Or, What's Left To Believe In During A Time Of Such Doubt?, Roger Friedman

Journal of Family Strengths

This article is a qualitative, personal report from the field, designed to highlight current developments in family-based theory and practice that bring hopefulness to workers and clients. The author, an experienced human services consultant and family therapist, draws from his recent experience in a number of states to identify exemplars of practice in the following areas: integrative theory building, functional family assessment, systems change in regard to inter-agency coordination and foster care, community building in low income neighborhoods, developing humility as helpers, and addressing issues of hope and spirituality with clients and with co-workers. Given the turbulent and hostile political …

Editorial: The Impact Of Welfare Reform On Families, Alvin L. Sallee

Journal of Family Strengths

On the horizon a huge wave is building, about to crash down on the poorest most hard pressed families in our country. The impact of welfare reform on families and on those who serve them will be profound The degree to which families and workers will be adversely affected is to date not fully understood. Yet as my son concluded, "...basically, if you are on welfare you had better win the lottery or learn to swim in the treacherous waters of poverty!" (C. Sallee, personal communication, November, 1996). We are also informed by looking back at the Elizabethan Poor Laws …

The Family Partners Credit Card: A Token Economy System Adapted For Intensive Family Preservation Services To Enable Families To Manage Difficult Behavior Of Adolescents, Jude Nichols, Barbara Peo Early

Journal of Family Strengths

Increasingly, families referred for Intensive Family Preservation Services have not experienced a crisis of maltreatment, focused on the parent; rather these families have children with chronic behavioral difficulties for which their parents lack the skills to cope. These are the same families whose children were formerly placed in residential programs. This paper presents The Family Partners Credit Card System, incorporating behavioral techniques developed to treat children in out-of-home placements into a family preservation model. Two case examples illustrate how the system has been modified to train biological or adoptive parents in parenting skills, enable them to teach their children pro-family …

Toward The Development Of Ethical Guidelines For Family Preservation, David A. Dosser Jr., Richard J. Shaffir, Michaux M. Shaffir, De Vault Clevenger, Dustin K. Jeffiries

Journal of Family Strengths

Family preservation workers need a standard set of ethical guidelines to assist them in providing their service in a proper manner. This paper describes how ethical codes have been developed for the "traditional" mental health care disciplines and why such codes are not sufficient for the type of work done in family preservation. The paper further provides examples of the types of ethical dilemmas family preservation workers encounter as well as suggestions for workers, supervisors, and agencies in dealing with such dilemmas.

Improving Family Functioning Through Family Preservation Services: Results Of The Los Angeles Experiment, William Meezan, Jacquelyn Mccroskey

Journal of Family Strengths

This article describes a study of the outcomes of home-based family preservation services for abusive and neglectful families in Los Angeles County. It focuses on changes in family functioning during the 3 month service period and one year after case closing. Families known to the public child welfare agency were referred to the project based on caseworker judgement of the need for services rather than on the criteria of imminent risk of placement. Two hundred forty families were randomly assigned to either the service group receiving family preservation services from two non-profit agencies or to the comparison group receiving regular …

Evaluating Family Preservation In Nevada: A University-State Agency Collaboration, Christine Bitonti, Joy Salmon

Journal of Family Strengths

In this paper, concepts from the emerging family-centered paradigm in child welfare and mental health are applied to evaluative research in family preservation: the ecological perspective, enhancement of competence, a consumer orientation, and collaborative relationships. The experience of family preservation research collaborators from the School of Social Work at the University of Nevada, Reno and the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services illustrate these concepts. The researchers apply the theory of isomorphism to the research endeavor to produce eight principles of effective research partnerships derived from family-centered concepts and their own experiences.

Idiographic Self-Monitoring Instruments To Empower Client Participation And Evaluate Outcome In Intensive Family Preservation Services, Barbara Peo Early

Journal of Family Strengths

Intensive Family Preservation Services seek to reflect the values of focusing on client strengths and viewing clients as colleagues. To promote those values, Intensive Family Preservation Programs should include a systematic form of client self monitoring in their packages of outcome measures. This paper presents a model of idiographic self-monitoring used in time series, single system research design developed for Family Partners, a family preservation program of the School for Contemporary Education in Annandale, Virginia. The evaluation model provides a means of empowering client families to utilize their strengths and promote their status as colleague in determining their own goals, …

Citation Analysis Of Faculty Publication: Beyond Science Citation Index And Social Science Citation Index, K. L. Reed

Library Staff Publications

When evaluated for promotion or tenure, faculty members are increasingly judged more on the quality than on the quantity of their scholarly publications. As a result, they want help from librarians in locating all citations to their published works for documentation in their curriculum vitae. Citation analysis using Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index provides a logical starting point in measuring quality, but the limitations of these sources leave a void in coverage of citations to an author's work. This article discusses alternative and additional methods of locating citations to published works.

Journal of Family Strengths

After 20 years of development, research and practice, it is time to begin a journal for family preservation and support. There are many exciting opportunities and issues for consumers and practitioners, as well! Last year most states became deeply invested in new collaboration activities across agency lines and with consumers. This is the "high" in which this journal was conceptualized. The need for a family preservation journal has also been made clear by the new Congress which wants to provide orphanages, or the Administration which has proposed residential group homes as the ultimate punishment for children who's parents fail to …
