This study investigates the comparative usability of two common bare-hand input techniques, touch and raycast, in the context of an educational extended reality (XR) application. An XR educational solar system application developed by the research team, Solar-XR, was used in the study. Thirty-four participants completed a series of tasks using both input methods in a within-subjects design. Usability was assessed using the validated VRSUQ questionnaire, performance was measured through task completion times, and user preferences were collected alongside qualitative feedback. Results showed that the touch input method was rated significantly more usable and was generally preferred by participants. While no …
The Role Of Spatial Abilities In Stem Learning And The Influence Of Individual Differences, Styliani Malkogeorgou
The Role Of Spatial Abilities In Stem Learning And The Influence Of Individual Differences, Styliani Malkogeorgou
Masters
Students’ decisions to pursue education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are shaped by an interplay of cognitive, social, and motivational factors. Spatial ability is among the most reliable predictors of STEM success, yet less is known about how it relates to students’ STEM attitudes and aspirations, and whether visuospatial working memory (VSWM) explains this relationship. This study tested the hypotheses that (a) stronger spatial abilities and VSWM would be associated with more positive STEM attitudes and stronger STEM aspirations, and (b) VSWM would mediate the relationship between spatial abilities and STEM attitudes/aspirations, while examining the influence …

Optical fiber interferometric sensors based on the Vernier effect are widely used for various applications due to their ultra-compact size, high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, electrical isolation, resistance to harsh environments, flexibility, multiplexing capability, and remote operation. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to gain a deeper fundamental understanding of the Vernier effect in optical fiber structures and to develop and investigate a series of novel Vernier effect optical …
Stimuli-Responsive Chemotherapy For Glioblastoma: Sequence-Dependent Synergy Of Cold Atmospheric Plasma And Ultrasound With Cationic Lipo-Doxo, Alessandro Cazzolla
Stimuli-Responsive Chemotherapy For Glioblastoma: Sequence-Dependent Synergy Of Cold Atmospheric Plasma And Ultrasound With Cationic Lipo-Doxo, Alessandro Cazzolla
Theses
Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive, infiltrative astrocytic tumour in which pharmacotherapy remains constrained by the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the heterogeneously altered blood brain tumour barrier, with additional limitations imposed by active efflux and the complexity of the tumour microenvironment. In this setting, externally addressable strategies that modulate transport and uptake at the site of disease are required. A stimuli-responsive chemotherapy platform was developed in which Lipo-DOXO was combined with two non-invasive physical modalities, low-frequency ultrasound (US) and cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), to enhance intratumoural delivery while limiting off-target effects. Liposomes were produced by thin-film hydration followed by a controlled, …

Study Of Nano-Bio Interactions In Biological Fluids: Modelling And Simulations., Beatrice Cipriani
Doctoral
Nanoparticles have attracted significant interest due to their tunable properties and unique physicochemical characteristics, offering promising applications in drug delivery, biosensing, and diagnostics. Their use in medicine has the potential to reshape current paradigms by enabling more efficient, precise, and patient-centric approaches. Although advances in nanomaterial synthesis have rapidly expanded the library of available nanodevices, our understanding of the mechanisms that govern their behaviour at biological interfaces remains limited. Nanoparticles are similar in size to biomolecules found in biological environments, leading to complex, competitive interactions that affect their functional performance, biological fate, and acquired bioidentity. Unlike traditional small molecules, which …

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
In the contemporary Muslim world, especially in Indonesia, the boom in religious tourism is increasingly widespread after the discovery of the grave sites of saints (wali) or people who are considered holy. More than that, pilgrimage is increasingly popular when these sites display natural views and multifaceted aspects, thereby adding to the intimacy of Islamic meditation and veneration rituals. This article focuses on five holy tombs in Lombok (West Nusa Tenggara), considered tombs of Muslim saints. Using ethnography with observational techniques and unstructured interviews, we explore the construction of veneration and the marketing efforts of pilgrimages to the …

Segmenting Religious Tourists Based On Google Maps Reviews Using Latent Semantic Analysis And Hierarchical Clustering, Senthilkumaran Piramanayagam, Jyothi Mallya, Kartikeya Bolar
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Researchers in the tourism industry and academics are interested in analysing and extracting conclusions from user-generated data because they offer valuable insights into visitors’ motives, experiences, and consumption behaviour. However, religious tourists’ data have rarely been explored specifically in segmentation studies. Therefore, this study aims to segment religious tourists based on their Google Map reviews using Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) and hierarchical clustering. These analyses have resulted in three distinct segments: heritage explorers, aesthetes, and self-transcendence seekers. While heritage explorers are interested in learning about the cultural and historical significance of a site, aesthetes appreciate its beauty and art, while …

The Epiphany celebration in Gondar, Ethiopia, is one of the most unique events in the world. Due to its outstanding cultural value, the Epiphany was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List. The remarkable history of Gondar and its vast cultural heritage make the city an open-air museum for the world. However, there has been little research focused on exploring the Epiphany celebration in Ethiopia. This study follows an exploratory and descriptive research design, utilising a qualitative approach. Interviews, observations, and document analysis were employed as data collection methods. Non-probability sampling techniques were used, specifically purposive and snowball sampling, involving …
Distal Tip Pressures & Acoustic Streaming In Vibrating Guidewires, Graham Gavin
Distal Tip Pressures & Acoustic Streaming In Vibrating Guidewires, Graham Gavin
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
INTRODUCTIONHigh frequency mechanical vibrations (20-50 kHz) applied to slender wires have been shown to disrupt thrombus and fibrous and calcified plaques. Advanced manufacturing techniques can achieve complex geometric features, such as tapering and distal tip geometries on wires, while still facilitating the transmission of vibrational energy (Anamagh et al.). These vibrating guidewires disrupt plaque tissue through direct contact ablation and acoustic effects such as pressure wave components, acoustic streaming and potentially, cavitation (Yao et al.).Acoustic pressure amplitudes near the tip are directly related to the onset of cavitation and also contribute to secondary effects like streaming. Morse proposed a solution …

Body Force Influence On Healthy And Diseased Red Blood Cell Sedimentation Using Multiphase Cfd Methods, Gerald Gallagher, Fergal J. Boyle
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
The accurate simulation of blood, which is a multiphase biofluid comprised of plasma and cellular components, is important for biomedical applications. Computational fluid dynamics is routinely used for blood simulation but traditionally treats the flow field as homogeneous. Red blood cell dynamics and deformation are important as they occupy approximately 45% of the volume in blood and control viscosity and non-Newtonian behaviour. Healthy and diseased red blood cells differ in shape and properties, and an understanding of the behaviour of these cells in flow allows for better insight into in-vitro and in-vivo applications such as early-stage disease identification, non-chemical cell …
The Unscripting Of Broadcasting In Postwar Ireland, Eileen Morgan-Zayachek
The Unscripting Of Broadcasting In Postwar Ireland, Eileen Morgan-Zayachek
Irish Communication Review
This article builds on existing histories of Irish broadcasting by examining the contexts and implementation of postwar reforms initiated by Fianna Fáil politician, Erskine Hamilton Childers. The lifting of script submission requirements and promotion of open debate extended Childers’ efforts to modernize Ireland’s infrastructure and promote civic engagement. Childers viewed Irish radio as a platform for cultivating critical thinking, public debate, and understanding of state institutions—assets he believed Irish citizens needed to compete in the global economy. The article reviews the repressive practices of the early broadcasting service that sought to avoid all controversial content. It also traces a throughline …
Crystal Sets And Listening-In: Radio In Ireland Before 2rn, Stephanie Rains
Crystal Sets And Listening-In: Radio In Ireland Before 2rn, Stephanie Rains
Irish Communication Review
When 2RN began broadcasting from its studios on Henry Street in Dublin on 1 January 1926, it became the first radio station in the Free State. However, it was very far from being the start of radio on the island of Ireland, as there was already a community of amateur operators and engineers conducting technical experiments. This article explores the radio landscape in Ireland which 2RN joined and transformed. The early enthusiasts often not very concerned with programming or with most of radio’s possibilities as a form of entertainment, but did have a very international perspective on the medium’s possibilities. …

Reflection Hoes Recorded On Photopolymerisable Glass Layers: A Step Towards Holographic Mirrors For Ar Technologies, David Ma, Suzanne Martin, Mohamed Oubaha, Tatsiana Mikulchyk
Conference Papers
Reflection Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs) offer a great potential for Augmented Reality (AR) display technologies due to their unique capability to redirect light with the predetermined wavelength in the opposite direction to the reconstructing light. AR displays based on HOEs enable a large variety of potential applications which necessitates the development of HOEs with long-term stable performance in challenging ambient conditions. Here, we present a study of the holographic recording capability of a photopolymerizable hybrid sol-gel (PHSG) which has shown to be a robust and water/temperature resistant material. Using optimal recording conditions, diffraction efficiency up to 18% has been achieved …
Addressing Geoai Governance: An Automated Gatekeeper For Building Outlines In Openstreetmap, Lasith Niroshan, James D. Carswell
Addressing Geoai Governance: An Automated Gatekeeper For Building Outlines In Openstreetmap, Lasith Niroshan, James D. Carswell
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) enables the automated generation of built environment map features, such as building outlines/footprints, on a global scale. However, the integration of these AI-generated datasets into Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) platforms like OpenStreetMap (OSM) risks incorporating ‘AI slop’, consisting of geometrically inconsistent/unreliable data, into the online map. While the OSM “Code of Conduct for Automated Edits” provides a policy framework for data ingestion, it lacks a machine-enforceable mechanism for real-time quality gating. This paper proposes a GeoAI-Gatekeeper to perform this task—an automated process that applies empirical Acceptable Quality Thresholds (AQT) to address the GeoAI data governance problem. …

Strain-Enabled Tuning Of Whispering Gallery Modes In A Polymer Capillary Microresonator, Rodion Dobretsov, V. R. Anand, Zhe Wang, Yiming Shen, Zhuochen Wang, Anuradha Rout, Rayhan Habib Jibon, Yuliya Semenova
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
We demonstrate strain-enabled, reversible spectral tuning of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-based capillary micro resonator. The WGMs were excited using evanescent wave coupling via an adiabatic fiber taper. A finite element method (FEM) model was developed to investigate strain-induced deformation in polymer capillaries, from which the corresponding wavelength tuning characteristics were numerically derived. Experimental results reveal that the polymer capillary resonator shows greater strain sensitivity than a solid polymer cylindrical resonator. A maximum strain sensitivity of 0.82 pm/με was experimentally demonstrated using a polymer capillary resonator (PCR) with an outer diameter of 100 μm and wall …

Skin Type Diversity In Image Datasets, Neda Alipour
Doctoral
Image-based AI systems that analyse human skin are increasingly used in healthcare and computer vision applications. However, many human skin-based image datasets do not provide reliable information about skin type, making it difficult to assess whether these systems perform consistently across the full spectrum of skin colour. The objective of this thesis is to examine how skin type diversity is represented and measured in image datasets, and to evaluate the reliability of image-based skin type measurement methods under different imaging conditions. Using publicly available skin lesion image datasets as a well-defined and widely used sub-class of skin image datasets, this …

Exploring Undergraduate Women’S Experiences Of Collaborative Learning In Engineering Education: A Phenomenological Study Of The Social World, Sandra Ireri Cruz Morena
Doctoral
The persistent underrepresentation of women in engineering education remains a concern across global and national contexts, despite rising overall enrolment of women in higher education. In Ireland, the national average of women entering Engineering, Manufacturing, and Construction (EMC) programmes has gradually increased; however, the rate at Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) has stayed at approximately 15% since 2016. This study seeks to better understand the gendered challenges underlying such trends by exploring the lived experiences of female undergraduate engineering students at TU Dublin, particularly in relation to collaborative learning environments such as project- and problem-based learning (PBL).

An Evaluation Of Modelling Of Propagation Using Comsol For A Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode Structure, Thomas Freir, Arun Kumar Mallik, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
This paper presents simulation models developed for investigating singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) structures, with the intention of utilising precise nano-scale 3D printing to print the center-section of the structures modelled. The models allow the design of structures for use in SMS fiber sensors, replacing the silica fiber center-section structures commonly used, with 3D printed elements. The paper discusses the process of evaluating and validating COMSOL propagation models by comparison to existing reported results and proposes the use of SMS self-imaging length and the transmission spectra as useful metrics for model comparisons. Both 2D and 3D COMSOL models are developed, and both show …

Fuzzy Logic-Based Driving Style Classification For Lane-Change Prediction In Intelligent Transportation Systems, Muhammed Fatih Koc, Nouman Ashraf, Pramod Pathak, Sachin Sharma
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
In recent years, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) have emerged as a solution to mitigate the problem of traffic congestion. Understanding human driving styles such as aggressive, normal, and cautious is crucial for safe driving. In particular, predicting lane-change manoeuvres may be further supported by combining vehicle state information with driving style information. However, existing vehicle trajectory datasets lack driving style information, making classification challenging. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a fuzzy logic-based driving style classification framework in a Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) environment. The model uses vehicle state information, including speed, longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration, and distance headway to classify …

This work presents a hardware-based evaluation of dual-antenna arrays using an IEEE 802.15.4z-compliant UWB angle of arrival (AoA) development kit to assess antenna performance in terms of phase difference of arrival (PDoA)/AoA linearity. Four antenna types: 1) printed monopole; 2) CPW-fed slot; 3) stacked dielectric resonator antenna (DRA); and 4) dual-layer microstrip patch are evaluated on channels 5 and 9, with measurements performed in a calibrated anechoic chamber under controlled conditions. The results show that wide beamwidth …
Recruitment Of Black Minority Community Into Irish Police: Evaluating The Dynamics Of Culture In Decision-Making., Adeyemi Adekanle
Recruitment Of Black Minority Community Into Irish Police: Evaluating The Dynamics Of Culture In Decision-Making., Adeyemi Adekanle
Dissertations
Ethnic and racial diversity in police services has been a focus for criminologists and policing scholars for some considerable time. But despite intense efforts, most multicultural societies still struggle to get Black minority communities recruited into their police services. Two widely held interconnected assumptions appear to be at issue. The first is that police occupational culture, which has been shown in some studies to be prejudicial, is, in many cases, blatantly racist. This may well be a catalyst or “push factor” in discouraging members of Black communities in particular from taking up police careers. The second is that members of …

The effects of climate change regularly impact the performance of transport networks. In the case of road transport, climate change has various impact drivers such as heat, cold, wind, snow, ice etc. which hamper safe and reliable operation. Due to the interdependent nature of critical infrastructures (CI), resilience assessment requires a whole stakeholder approach which engages not only transport operators, but also the various other infrastructures within a geographical area. This paper initially outlines the ICARUS project which aims to deliver a common approach for National Road Authorities (NRAs) in addressing the resilience of road infrastructure to Climate Change. Results …
