Androgen receptor (AR)-targeted therapy remains the gold standard strategy for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. Several compounds of Indane derivatives have been reported to exhibit significant AR antagonist capabilities, starting at a concentration as low as 0.1 μM. However, an anti-prostate cancer lead molecule derived from Indane-related scaffold remains elusive. The project will investigate the interaction of novel bioactive indane scaffolds as androgen receptor antagonists through in silico and in vitro screening to complete the hit-to-lead, while also investigating potential drug delivery and drug activation/sensitisation mechanisms using a combination of colloid nanomaterial and cold atmospheric plasma to target AR-independent, …

The Built Environment is one of the main contributors to global resource consumption, waste generation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, exacerbating environmental degradation and climate change (MacArthur Foundation, 2022). Circular Economy and sustainability concepts have emerged as promising strategies to address those challenges (EUR-Lex, 2015; European Commission, 2019). The Circular Economy aims to minimise waste and resource depletion, while sustainability emphasises on meeting the current and future needs of society with minimal environmental impact (Pomponi and Moncaster 2017a; Çetin et al. 2021; MacArthur Foundation 2022). The digital transition, facilitated by technological advancements, can accelerate the adoption of Circular Economy principles …

Articles

Novel detection strategies that exploit the unique properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) hold great potential for the advancement of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics, such as lateral flow and dipstick immunoassay [1–3]. Owing to its biocompatibility and convenient surface modifications, gold nanoparticles with enhanced sensitivity reduce the sample-to-answer times to less than 5 min (Figure 1). Methods like covalent conjugation and electrostatic adsorption are explored for antibody immobilization to develop a gold nanoparticle-based biosensor for fast and sensitive localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) for both basic research and clinical diagnostics. The mounting of antibodies on the gold nanoparticle surface requires selective binding …

Using Chatgpt To Generate Gendered Language, Shweta Soundararajan, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany Mar 2024

Using Chatgpt To Generate Gendered Language, Shweta Soundararajan, Manuela Nayantara Jeyaraj, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

Gendered language is the use of words that denote an individual's gender. This can be explicit where the gender is evident in the actual word used, e.g. mother, she, man, but it can also be implicit where social roles or behaviours can signal an individual's gender - for example, expectations that women display communal traits (e.g., affectionate, caring, gentle) and men display agentic traits (e.g., assertive, competitive, decisive). The use of gendered language in NLP systems can perpetuate gender stereotypes and bias. This paper proposes an approach to generating gendered language datasets using ChatGPT which will provide data for data-driven …

Holographic optical elements (HOEs) have the potential to enable more compact, versatile, and lightweight optical designs, but many challenges remain. Volume HOEs have the advantage of high diffraction efficiency, but they present both chromatic selectivity and chromatic dispersion, which impact their use with wide spectrum light sources. Single-color light emitting diode (LED) sources have a narrow spectrum that reduces these issues and this makes them better suited for use with volume HOEs. However, the LED source size must be taken into consideration for compact volume HOE-LED systems. To investigate the design limits for compact HOE-LED systems, a theoretical and experimental …
