Creating And Storing A Toolkit For Pilgrimage And Religious Tourism Sites, Peter Wiltshier
Creating And Storing A Toolkit For Pilgrimage And Religious Tourism Sites, Peter Wiltshier
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This paper reflects our abiding interest in our origins and of those religious and pilgrimage spaces that we attest to actively being part of our cultural inheritance. It explores options for, and barriers to, the creation of a repository of information to support practitioners and the clergy to maintain and develop these religious and pilgrimage sites. A model toolkit for storing collected knowledge is presented with illustrative examples from a range of sources. The examples used are largely drawn from a Northern / Western perspective.

The Roles Of Social Entrepreneurs In Rural Destination Development, Ziene Mottiar, Karla Boluk, Carol Kline
The Roles Of Social Entrepreneurs In Rural Destination Development, Ziene Mottiar, Karla Boluk, Carol Kline
Articles
This paper examines the relevance of social entrepreneurs in our consideration of rural destination development, which represents an important tool for rural revitalization. While many peripheral rural areas face significant challenges in terms of sustaining communities and attracting tourists, it is often social entrepreneurs, as much as traditional entrepreneurs, who are involved in developing new ideas, products and activities, as well as envisioning a future for the area. This study, which is based on cross-case analysis resulting from nine semi-structured interviews carried out in rural areas in Ireland, South Africa and USA, identifies key roles that social entrepreneurs play in …
Rethinking Zoning For People: Utilizing The Concept Of The Village, Kevin Leyden, Lorraine D'Arcy
Rethinking Zoning For People: Utilizing The Concept Of The Village, Kevin Leyden, Lorraine D'Arcy
Other
In this chapter, we propose it is time to re-think and re-imagine how we approach zoning. This is especially true for suburban developments. Today, especially in the United States, zoning in suburban areas is being used to segregate and separate the component parts of our communities into distinct zones which are spread out geographically and in most cases require the daily use of an automobile. The negative consequences of this form of development for health, community and the environment are discussed. Using a study of neighborhoods in Dublin, Ireland and its suburbs we examine how professionals and the public view …
Making Ireland An Age Friendly Country, The Role Of Local Government And Age Friendly Ireland, Jack Keyes
Making Ireland An Age Friendly Country, The Role Of Local Government And Age Friendly Ireland, Jack Keyes
Papers
Ireland has made progress in improving the lives of older people. The rapidly increasing population aged over 55 necessitates responses at all levels of government and in civil society. Since 2008 Irish Local Government has taken the lead role in coordinating inter-agency responses working in partnership with older people and implemented many hundreds of initiatives. The Age Friendly Ireland Programme was established to provide national direction, co-ordination and support to the local age friendly alliances set up in all 31 cities and county local authority areas under the City and County Age Friendly Programme. Strong linkages have been established with …
Developing A Unified Approach To Sustainable Consumption Behaviour: Opportunities For A New Environmental Paradigm, Vivienne Byers, Alan Gilmer
Developing A Unified Approach To Sustainable Consumption Behaviour: Opportunities For A New Environmental Paradigm, Vivienne Byers, Alan Gilmer
Articles
Politicians and national policy makers seek to encourage individuals to engage in a wide range of pro-environmental practices to address both discrete environmental problems and major global challenges such as climate change. Theoretically, the field of behavioural management in environmental consumption which seeks to change holarchic open human systems, is much contested. This paper proposes to develop a synthesized conceptual framework embracing a unified approach that addresses the systematic, structural, and institutional perspectives on how consumption, through public policy initiatives, can be developed and changed to reflect a deeper ecological foundation. This approach considers the debate regarding policy and behavioural …
The Automation Of Bim For Compliance Checking: A Visual Programming Approach, Jonathan Reinhardt, Malachy Mathews
The Automation Of Bim For Compliance Checking: A Visual Programming Approach, Jonathan Reinhardt, Malachy Mathews
Conference papers
A study by FIATECH confirmed that human interpretation causes inconsistencies in applying building compliance & regulations (Solihin & Eastman, 2015). Producing, updating and quality assuring such processes is inconsistent and unreliable (Preidel & Borrmann, 2016). A barrier to interpretation of building regulations is that software is designed by developers that are separate to local authorities (Solihin & Eastman, 2015). The current literature suggests Singapore, Norway, USA & Australia have all implemented BIM automation systems for building regulations. This study reviews current automation systems and based on this proposes a system of creating a checking system is efficient in the control …

Familiar civic engagement terms across Higher Education include, volunteering, service learning, community based learning/research, community engaged research and capacity building.
The Social Pillar Of Sustainable Development A Literature Review And Framework For Policy Analysis, Kevin Murphy
The Social Pillar Of Sustainable Development A Literature Review And Framework For Policy Analysis, Kevin Murphy
The ITB Journal
There is a need to develop a clearer understanding of what the social pillar of sustainable development means and how it relates to the environmental pillar. This article contributes to this process by presenting a conceptual framework that identifies four overarching social concepts and links them to environmental imperatives. These concepts are: public awareness, equity, participation, and social cohesion. The framework builds on concepts and policy objectives outlined in research on international sustainable development indicators and the social sustainability literature. The social pillar can be expanded to include environmental, international, and intergenerational dimensions. This framework can then be used to …
Children And Young People’S Participation In The Community In Ireland: Experiences And Issues, Catherine Forde, Deirdre Horgan, Shirley Martin Dr, Aisling Parkes
Children And Young People’S Participation In The Community In Ireland: Experiences And Issues, Catherine Forde, Deirdre Horgan, Shirley Martin Dr, Aisling Parkes
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This paper presents the findings of research into children and young people’s experiences of participating in their communities in Ireland. Using a social and relational understanding of participation, the research found that children and young people are engaged in a wide range of activities in their communities. They are however often misunderstood in the community and have limited opportunities for participation in decisions affecting them. Despite these problems, they report positive experiences of participating in youth clubs and organisations, where their participation is supported by adults. The paper discusses the implications of these findings for research, public policy and community.
Factors That Contribute To Communities Establishing Sustainable Development Initiatives In Ireland, Gerard Doyle
Factors That Contribute To Communities Establishing Sustainable Development Initiatives In Ireland, Gerard Doyle
Conference Papers
Community gardens contribute to addressing a range of environmental, economic and social issues facing urban communities across the globe (Keeney, 2000; Calvin, 2011; McIvaine-Newsad and Porter, 2013). In response to the benefits that they generate, there has been a significant increase in community gardens internationally over the last thirty years (Firth et al., 2011). Community gardens can be considered a form of sustainable development initiative (SDI). This paper is concerned with the factors that contribute to the establishment of sustainable development initiatives in Ireland by focusing on community gardens in Dublin City. The core question being addressed is: What capacities …

Draft Planning Scheme: Postgraduate Urban Design Student Project On Behalf Of Fingal County Council, David O'Connor
Students Learning with Communities
The project brief for a Kellystown Urban Design Masterplan was set out in September 2016. Although the lands are designated as an LAP in the Draft Fingal Development Plan 2017-2023, the approach is that of an SDZ. Constraints and opportunities were identified early on in the process. The site was visited on several occasions by the team and photographs were taken. A meeting was held on site with Fingal Council in late October 2016 clarified the project brief. The importance of focusing commercial and retail activity in the existing Coolmine Industrial Estate and village was emphasised. The focus of the …
Community Radio Development And Public Funding For Programme Production: Options For Policy, Niamh Farren, Ciaran Murray, Kenneth Murphy
Community Radio Development And Public Funding For Programme Production: Options For Policy, Niamh Farren, Ciaran Murray, Kenneth Murphy
Irish Communication Review
This paper originates in a wider research project funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s media research scheme.1 The project arose out of collaboration between community media practitioners and academics. The project sought to provide a comparative analysis of national ‘programme production schemes’ which are open to the community radio sector in other states. A key context for that research was the legislative requirement that the programme production scheme run by the BAI pay attention to the ‘the developmental needs of community broadcasters’. An additional context for the research was the criticism from within the sector that the BAI’s scheme …

Eroding Planning Powers Leaves Us At The Mercy Of The Market, Lorcan Sirr
Eroding Planning Powers Leaves Us At The Mercy Of The Market, Lorcan Sirr
Media
There is little evidence to show that the planning system in Ireland hinders the delivery of housing, yet it is regularly blamed for preventing developers from building. Consistent with our political tradition of “anecdote as fact”, no credible evidence is ever presented to prove these allegations that the planning system—and indeed, planners themselves—are a blockage. The elephant in the room is, of course, owners sitting on land with planning permission who won’t build, or who won’t sell if they can’t afford to build. Critics of the planning system are fewin reality, yet they are vocal and influential. Diluting the system …

Stumbling Block Of Social Housing Stalls O’Devaney Gardens, Lorcan Sirr
Media
Last week, Dublin city council (DCC) resolved a dispute with its own councillors over the regeneration of O’Devaney Gardens, a council estate behind Arbour Hill in Dublin. Named after Bishop O’Devaney, who was hanged at Arbour Hill in 1612 as a friend of Tyrone rebel chief Hugh O’Neill, O’Devaney Gardens is a 1950s corporation-built estate of 300 flats in 12 (originally 13) blocks.

Religious Tourism And Italian Sacred Mounts: Experiences Of Networking And Co-Operation At A Unesco Site, Raffaella Afferni, Carla Ferrario
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
A Sacred Mount is a historical holy site and former pilgrimage attraction. It is a devotional complex located on a mountain, and composed of a series of chapels and shrines in which scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary or the saints are represented through paintings and sculptures. In 2003 the Sacred Mounts of Piedmont and Lombardy were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List being considered as representative of something that can be understood, in part, through visitor interactions with the areas in which they are located (see Di Giovine, 2009:208).
The visitors to Sacred Mounts are: …
Education For Sustainable Development- The Irish Construction Sector And The Need For A Sustainable Approach, Conor Mcmanus
Education For Sustainable Development- The Irish Construction Sector And The Need For A Sustainable Approach, Conor Mcmanus
Masters
This study explores the path to be taken towards achieving Sustainable Development. It examines the impact the construction industry has on the environment as a result of a knowledge and skills gap and considers how our present way of thinking facilitates this. It then goes on to show how a change in construction education can bring about change in the industry and facilitate the implementation of sustainable development. The study examines how the singular emphasis on technology, the introduction of the ‘expert’ into the domestic building process and the narrow focus on operational energy conservation raises questions about Ireland's present …

What Do Programme Chairs Think About The Integration Of Sd In Their Programmes?, Iacovos Nicolaou, Eddie Conlon
What Do Programme Chairs Think About The Integration Of Sd In Their Programmes?, Iacovos Nicolaou, Eddie Conlon
Conference papers
This paper presents the findings of interviews with six engineering programme chairs regarding their views about the level of integration of SD in their programmes. They are part of a wider study which is examining the integration of SD in engineering programmes across three Irish Higher Education Institutions. Previous stages of the study have determined that students’ knowledge and understanding about SD is inadequate due to the lack of a holistic integration of SD competencies and the focus on skills development in their programmes. The paper will explore the apparent contradiction in that most programme chairs believe that SD is …

An Assessment Of Mobility Among Key Disadvantaged Communities In North East Dublin, David O'Connor, Matthias Borscheid, Odran Reid
Conference Papers
In the context of a healthy communities initiative, this study looks at mobility in a disadvantaged area in a suburban area in north east Dublin. Individuals who avail of the services of community based organisations were interviewed in-depth about their travel patterns over a period of a week and their views on the availability and quality of transport services were ascertained. The area has a high social housing quotient, though much of it is now privately owned. It has a profile of low income, welfare dependency, marginal poverty and a population base that has demonstrated some level of poorer than …

Intergenerational learning involves different age groups learning together or learning from each other in a range of settings. It is viewed as being important in contemporary Europe as it facilitates learning that might otherwise be diminished due to changing family structures, migration, technological changes and growing age segregation. Interest in intergenerational learning stems from new understandings of the process and participation in education and learning. This includes the notions of lifelong and lifewide learning as well as the need to respond positively to the growing separation of generations and the subsequent distance between old and young. It also can be …
Reconsidering Community-Based Retailing, Rebecca Maughan, Aidan O'Driscoll
Reconsidering Community-Based Retailing, Rebecca Maughan, Aidan O'Driscoll
Books/Book Chapters
One of the areas with great potential for economic, social and environmental benefit is community-based retailing. The concept of community based retailing can incorporate a number of different tenets. We suggest that it is retailing that is based close to the community it serves, usually within the town or village centre rather than out-of-town locations, and which is composed of a diverse range of small and medium sized business that are often independently or co-operatively owned. These community-based businesses form part of the social and community infrastructure.
We first of all explore the broad benefits of community-based retailing. We focus …

Partners Against Crime A Review Of Partnerships In Joint Policing Committees, Dermot Harrington
Dissertations
Recent developments of policing in Ireland have seen a shift towards local crime prevention initiatives through local partnerships. The principle aim of this study is to explore the effects of the partnership model of policing with the recent introduction of Joint Policing Committees (JPCs). This dissertation seeks to examine the opinions of members of JPCs towards this model. The research employed a qualitative methodology obtained through semi-structured interviews of JPC members and observational studies. In addition, this thesis reports on literature regarding partnership, security and governance in modern society. While this research project found that informal partnerships between An Garda …

The Management And Creation Of Knowledge: Do Wikis Help?, Catherine Bruen, Noel Fitzpatrick, Paul Gormley, Jen Harvey, Claire Macavinney
Other resources
Wikis are frequently cited in Higher Education research as appropriate and powerful web spaces which provide opportunities to capture, discuss, and review individual, group, project or organisational activities. These activities, in turn, offer possibilities for knowledge development by utilising wiki collaborative active spaces. The chapter uses selected case studies examples to illustrate the use of wikis to support online community based tasks, project development/process, collaborative materials development and various student and peer supported activities. A key focus of the chapter centres on evaluating the effectiveness (or otherwise) of wikis to create online communities to support knowledge management (development, retention and …

Cross-National Comparative Analysis Of Community Radio Funding Schemes, Kenneth W. Murphy
Other resources
Community radio programming is distinguished by its production, its content and its purposes. It is made by the community, for the community and is primarily about the community. This report is a comparative assessment of the programme production support scheme available to the community radio sector in Ireland and those deployed in a number of comparative national settings. The research project provides a description of Irish and International (Austria, Canada, Denmark, France and New Zealand) models for supporting programme production by community radio broadcasters. It also evaluates how different aspects of the various models contribute to the capacities and sustainability …
