This paper presents a collaborative learning course in which students from four universities in different Asian countries work in mixed teams to learn how to develop user-centered products and solve problems in a hands-on way using the Design Thinking framework. For the past three years, the courses were conducted entirely online. Cooperation and collaboration among diverse people from different backgrounds are essential to solving the social problems facing the world today. Like many universities, we have been actively sending our students abroad to provide opportunities to experience diverse cultures and values, but the pandemic has made it very difficult to …
What’S Law Got To Do With It? How The Degree Of Legalization Affects The Durability Of Post-Conflict Autonomy Agreements, Felix Schulte, Gene Carolan
What’S Law Got To Do With It? How The Degree Of Legalization Affects The Durability Of Post-Conflict Autonomy Agreements, Felix Schulte, Gene Carolan
Articles
Research has identified several factors that impact the sustainability of post-conflict territorial autonomy arrangements (TAA), including previous levels of violence, economic development in a given territory, or the strategic importance thereof. We argue that a hitherto neglected variable lies in the legal form of the autonomy agreement – that is, the degree to which it has been ‘legalized’ by the language and processes prescribed in the agreement. Based on a qualitative evaluation, we assess the legalization degree of 236 TAA signed between 1990 and 2019. Survival analyses and Cox regression models show that a higher degree of legalization has a …
Where You Are: Location Data In The Synthetic City, Conor Mcgarrigle
Where You Are: Location Data In The Synthetic City, Conor Mcgarrigle
Conference Papers
In 2012 Google's Eric Schmidt, in the infamous creepy line interview, claimed that Google (we) “know where you are, know where you've been and can more or less guess what you're thinking”. Schmidt, no stranger to saying the quiet part aloud, tellingly connected locational knowledge with intent and prediction, and in doing so placed location at the heart of Google's data-extractivist model. This paper argues that as the size and complexity of AI models increases cities are key sites of both training data extraction and model deployment, with technology companies competing to build models that offer machinic understandings of cities …

Despite the growing importance of mobile social commerce (Ms-commerce), little research has been conducted on the effects of informational-related factors on Ms-commerce and the role of trust in user willingness to share their experiences. Drawing on the Information Adoption Model, we examine the effect of information usefulness, quality, credibility, and need on information adoption and the effect of information adoption on trust and willingness to share Ms-commerce experience. Using data from 280 UK Ms-commerce users, we applied Partial Least-Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) to test the model. The findings show that informational-related factors have a significant and positive impact on …

Improving Communication Procedures By Means Of Videorecorded Proposals, Marta Aguilar, Jordi Olivella
Practice Papers
There is an agreement regarding the importance of communication in the promotion processes of all types of technical or entrepreneurial initiatives. Communication skills have to make it possible to obtain the maximum interaction with the agents involved and facilitate the commitment of these agents to a project. In this context, communicators’ erroneous perception of their own abilities and of how they are transmitting the information is a significant drawback that calls for improvement. Video-recording someone when speaking creates an impact on them given that the possibility of seeing themselves implies a significant change in the learning process. This technique has …

The prevalence of hate speech and offensive language on social media platforms such as Twitter has significant consequences, ranging from psychological harm to the polarization of societies. Consequently, social media companies have implemented content moderation measures to curb harmful or discriminatory language. However, a lack of consistency and transparency hinders their ability to achieve desired outcomes. This article evaluates various ML models, including an ensemble, Explainable Boosting Machine (EBM), and Linear Support Vector Classifier (SVC), on a public dataset of 24,792 tweets by T. Davidson, categorizing tweets into three classes: hate, offensive, and neither. The top-performing model achieves a weighted …

Modelling And Mitigating Interlocutor Confusion In Situated Human-Avatar And Human-Robot Interaction, Na Li
Dissertations
Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is an important but challenging field focused on improving the interaction between humans and robots, to make the interaction more intelligent and effective. However, building a natural conversational HRI is an interdisciplinary challenge for scholars, engineers, and designers. Achieving successful conversational interaction with a social robot necessitates not only observing a user’s active participation in the interaction but also being aware of their emotional and attitudinal states as the interaction progresses. On the topic of attitudinal states, one field that has received little attention to date is monitoring the user for possible confusion states. Confusion is a …

Given the widespread accessibility of content creation and sharing, false information proliferation is a growing concern. Researchers typically tackle fake news detection (FND) in specific topics using binary classification. Our study addresses a more practical FND scenario, analyzing a corpus with unknown topics through multiclass classification, encompassing true, false, partially false, and other categories. Our contribution involves: (1) exploring three BERT-based models—SBERT, RoBERTa, and mBERT; (2) enhancing results via ChatGPT-generated artificial data for class balance; and (3) improving outcomes using a two-step binary classification procedure. Our focus is on the CheckThat! Lab dataset from CLEF-2022. Our experimental results demonstrate a …

Language embeddings are often used as black-box word-level tools that provide powerful language analysis across many tasks, but yet for many tasks such as Authorship Attribution access to feature level information on character n-grams can provide insights to help with model refinement and development. In this paper we investigate and evaluate the importance of character n-grams within an embeddings context in authorship attribution through the use of attention scores. We perform this investigation both for English (Reuters_50_50) and Russian (Taiga) news authorship datasets. Our analysis show that character n-grams attention score is higher for n-grams that are considered to be …

Queerness and queer people face an uncertain future in the face of ever more widely deployed and invasive artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies have caused numerous harms to queer people, including privacy violations, censoring and downranking queer content, exposing queer people and spaces to harassment by making them hypervisible, deadnaming and outing queer people. More broadly, they have violated core tenets of queerness by classifying and controlling queer identities. In response to this, the queer community in AI has organized Queer in AI, a global, decentralized, volunteer-run grassroots organization that employs intersectional and community-led participatory design to build an inclusive …

Exploring Zero-Shot And Joint Training Cross-Lingual Strategies For Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis Based On Contextualized Multilingual Language Models, Dang Van Thin, Hung Quoc Ngo, Duong Ngoc Hao, Ngan Luu-Thuy-Nguyen
Articles
Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) has attracted many researchers’ attention in recent years. However, the lack of benchmark datasets for specific languages is a common challenge because of the prohibitive cost of manual annotation. The zero-shot cross-lingual strategy can be applied to solve this gap in research. Moreover, previous works mainly focus on improving the performance of supervised ABSA with pre-trained languages. Therefore, there are few to no systematic comparisons of the benefits of multilingual models in zero-shot and joint training cross-lingual for the ABSA task. In this paper, we focus on the zero-shot and joint training cross-lingual transfer task for …

Easy and uncontrolled access to the Internet provokes the wide propagation of false information, which freely circulates in the Internet. Researchers usually solve the problem of fake news detection (FND) in the framework of a known topic and binary classification. In this paper we study possibilities of BERT-based models to detect fake news in news flow with unknown topics and four categories: true, semi-true, false and other. The object of consideration is the dataset CheckThat! Lab proposed for the conference CLEF-2022. The subjects of consideration are the models SBERT, RoBERTa, and mBERT. To improve the quality of classification we use …

Show, Prefer And Tell: Incorporating User Preferences Into Image Captioning, Annika Lindh, Robert J. Ross, John Kelleher
Conference papers
Image Captioning (IC) is the task of generating natural language descriptions for images. Models encode the image using a convolutional neural network (CNN) and generate the caption via a recurrent model or a multi-modal transformer. Success is measured by the similarity between generated captions and human-written “ground-truth” captions, using the CIDEr [14], SPICE [1] and METEOR [2] metrics. While incremental gains have been made on these metrics, there is a lack of focus on end-user opinions on the amount of content in captions. Studies with blind and low-vision participants have found that lack of detail is a problem [6, 13, …

How Online Discourse Networks Fields Of Practice: The Discursive Negotiation Of Autonomy On Art Organisation About Pages, Tommie Soro
Articles
This article examines how the online discourse of art organisations forges relationships between the artworld and the fields of politics and economy. Combining elements of Pierre Bourdieu’s field analysis and Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, the article analyses an elite art magazine, e-flux, and an elite art museum, IMMA, and the activities of discourses, genres, and utterances on their about pages. Its results suggest that the about pages of these organisations forge links between the artworld and the fields of politics and economy by mobilising discourse in these fields and by incorporating discourse practices from these fields. The ideological tension …

The period from the 1990s through to 2020 saw a profound shift in the identity of the Republic of Ireland. The early twentieth century was focussed on the move from a colonial to a postcolonial existence, and the majority of the first decades of independence were spent struggling as one of the poorest countries in Western Europe and taking tentative steps onto the single market as a member of the EU (then EEC) after 1973. However, the period of the 1990s to late 2000s saw the nation gradually assert itself as an increasingly liberal, notionally secular, economically vigorous member of …
