An Exploratory Study Of How Decisions Are Made In The Yield Management Environment Of Four Star Dublin Hotels, Tony Kiely
Other resources
Yield management in the hotel industry has been described as a method of profitably managing fixed capacity. A critical element of yield management is the decision strategy employed as this determines the degree to which optimum solutions are generated. Recent research has indicated that the use of technology assisted decision optimising models (the management science model) would greatly improve the optimisation of decisions by minimising the need to employ guesswork in achieving optimum solutions. Despite this assurance, yield management remains couched in uncertainty through being inextricably associated with forecasting future demand for a perishable product in an increasingly competitive environment. …

There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris
There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris
Conference Papers
The paper investigates the various narrative and cinematographic strategies employed in Pasolini's 'The Gospel According to St Matthew' (1964), Tarkovsy's 'Andrei Rublev' (1966) and Kieslowski's 'A Short Film about Love' (1988) to correct and undermine a decentred representation which is structured around power-informed centre-periphery relations. It discusses the issue of assumed centrality and modern alienation through instrumentalised, detached perception.

Towards A Sociological Understanding Of Irish Travellers: Introducing A People, Niall C. Mcelwee, Ashling Jackson, Grant Charles
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This paper is one in a series of three papers viewing aspects of native cultures and, in this instance, will primarily define the Traveller population in Ireland, give a brief history of this population whilst discussing racism and some of its implications. There will be a particular focus on current systems of health, education and child protection in order to determine Traveller experiences of these key child and youth care related service providers in Ireland. The second paper will focus upon an examination of the experiences of aboriginal people in Canada. It will have a particular emphasis upon the marginization …

Situated Learning, Distributed Cognition: Do Academics Really Need To Know?, Anne Murphy
Level 3
The dominant approach to the study of learning throughout most of the twentieth century was to view learning as cognitive only, as if it were a process contained in the mind of the learner, decontextualised from the lived-in world. There is now, however, a growing interest in the study of learning as situated in a specific time, place and social activity – as ‘situated learning’ – and to view the locus of learning not as in the brain of the single individual (person-solo) but as ‘distributed’ among person, language, artefacts, activities and environment (person-plus) (see Lave and Wenger, 1999; …
Searching For Greater Variety In Strategic Thinking, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt
Searching For Greater Variety In Strategic Thinking, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt
Conference papers
This paper proposes a use of the discursive approach to explicate variety in ways of strategic thinking. Such an explication of variety is both useful managerially in increasing awareness of greater discursive resources and also theoretically in critiquing views of strategic thinking as homogenous and organizationally contained. Ways of strategic thinking have been investigated using a variety of approaches including expertise perspectives (Voss, Greene et al. 1983), cognitive mapping (Eden, Jones et al. (1979); Huff (1990) ) and upper echelon theory (Hambrick 1998). More recently the linguistic turn in organizational sciences (Alvesson and Kärreman 2000), and the study of strategy …

What Does 'Impact' Mean In The Evaluation Of Learning Technology, Jen Harvey, Martin Oliver
What Does 'Impact' Mean In The Evaluation Of Learning Technology, Jen Harvey, Martin Oliver
Journal Articles
Whilst many projects in Higher Education are expected to demonstrate their impact, quite what this requirement means is often left unspecified. This paper draws on the experiences of the EFFECTS project in an attempt to illuminate this issue. The EFFECTS evaluation framework is used to structure this discussion, which explores the complexities associated with identifying impact in terms of student learning, changes in practice for academics, changes within an organisation and national development. Common themes arising from these areas are then identified.
The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan
The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan
Articles
This article examines the limitations of the concept of sustainable consumption in terms of the inadequate attention given to the social, cultural and historical contextualization of consumption. I argue that Macromarketing should adopt modes of inquiry that more fully engage with this contextualization. The implicit assumptions of ‘sustainable consumption’ center on the rational individual and his or her needs and wants, and neglect the significance of consumption practices as embodying the relations between individuals. Acts of consumption are not in opposition to, and prior to, macro structures and processes, they are macro processes at work. Consumer practices are cultural and …

Teaching The Media In Ireland, Brian O'Neill, Helen Howley
Teaching The Media In Ireland, Brian O'Neill, Helen Howley
Articles
This chapter presents an outline of the context, provision and future prospects for Media Education in Ireland with particular reference to the junior secondary cycle. The research, carried out by as part of the Euromedia Project, was co-ordinated by the School of Media, Technological University Dublin and was carried out between January and June 2001. To date, little if any formal research has been carried on provisions for media education in Ireland. O’Halloran (1992) and Lynskey (1990) both identified the need and proposed methodologies for media education in Irish primary and secondary curricula respectively and O’Neill (2000) describes the historical …

The Light Beneath The Bushel: A Discussion Paper On Early Years Education And Care In The Republic Of Ireland, Francis Douglas, Mary Horgan
The Light Beneath The Bushel: A Discussion Paper On Early Years Education And Care In The Republic Of Ireland, Francis Douglas, Mary Horgan
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This discussion paper builds on 'Where Angels Fear to Tread' in vol. 1, no. 1 of this journal (Horgan and Douglas 1998). It seeks to provide recommendations concerning the way forward which were submitted by the authors to the National Forum for Early Childhood Education in February 1988. These were based on research carried out for more than a decade on Early Years Education and Care in the Education Department of University College Cork. The paper commences with an overview of the 'Early Years' in the Republic of Ireland and then considers quality child-centred provision under three headings; structures, training …

Mental Health Care Policies And Services In Switzerland, Stefan Kunz
Mental Health Care Policies And Services In Switzerland, Stefan Kunz
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This article summarises the recent development of Swiss mental health policies and services. The last three decades have been characterised by a strong emphasis on the socio psychiatric approach Bachmann, 1995; Ciompi, 1997, 1994,1987a, 1987b). The establishment of a decentralised, patient and community focused mental health care network, integrating different therapeutic methods under a uniform administration is the base concept of the emerging movement (Ernst, 1998;Bachmann, 1995,Ciompi, 1994, 1987b). Achievements and problems of mental health care provision are outlined. A more proactive role for mental health care professionals in policy is proposed to contribute to the solution of present injustices. …
Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland And The Challenge To Educational Disadvantage, Jackie O'Toole
Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland And The Challenge To Educational Disadvantage, Jackie O'Toole
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Acknowledging the common assumption locating the impact of education in its role to act as a mediator between origins and destinations, this paper examines Early Childhood Care and Education [ECCE], particularly the role state provided, compensatory education plays in challenging educational disadvantage. Initially operationalisation is made of the key concepts of ECCE, equality of opportunity and educational disadvantage. I then move to briefly describe the historical development of ECCE and compensatory education. Three state provided compensatory education programmes are identified: Rutland Street Project, Breaking the Cycle and Early Start. I conclude by outlining the significant impact early interventions can have …
Transitivity And The Choice Of A Preposition In Any Language, Valerie Hascoet
Transitivity And The Choice Of A Preposition In Any Language, Valerie Hascoet
Other Resources
This thesis examines the question of determination of transitivity for a verb through a comparison of processes involved in English and in French. It takes in several theories belonging to the area of the syntax-semantics interface in order to understand how a predicate is construed as either intransitive or direct transitive or indirect transitive in either language. The study focuses on a corpus of verbs that present different argument structures in French and in English. It analyses the various factors that determine the choice of a transitivity status for a given predicate. It discusses whether that process of determination lies in …

Where Angels Fear To Tread, Mary Horgan, Francis Douglas
Where Angels Fear To Tread, Mary Horgan, Francis Douglas
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This paper considers education as the fulfilment of a person's overall potential as a human being. It thus concentrates on the multiplicity of factors which interact and interweave to produce ulfilled, caring members of our society. The whole notion of child development can only be understood within a cultural context. As Mead (1932) showed, child rearing practices differ from culture to culture and the role of adults in that culture has a strong influence on the type of activity in which their young offspring engage. For example, playing at mothers and fathers will obviously eflect the different functions that adults …
