Samples of the nominal composition (Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.5-x}Ho_x) Ba_2Cu_3O_{7- \delta} , 0 \le x \le 0.5, have been prepared using the conventional solid state reaction. The effect of holmium and neodymium substitution on electrical resistivity, transition temperature T_c, lattice parameters, size of crystallite and grain size has been investigated. X-ray diffraction, electron micro-probe, scanning electron microscope and IR spectra, have been used in our investigation. The results show that the transition temperature T_c, electron-hole jump rate and lattice parameters (a, b) have minimum values at x = 0.2, while c increases to maximum at x = 0.2. The size of crystallite, the …
The Effects Of Joint Forms (Shape) And Dimensions On The Strengths Of Mortise And Tenon Joints, Ali̇ Naci̇ Tankut, Nurgül Tankut
The Effects Of Joint Forms (Shape) And Dimensions On The Strengths Of Mortise And Tenon Joints, Ali̇ Naci̇ Tankut, Nurgül Tankut
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Until recently, detailing of joints was largely a matter of tradition, based on trial and error methods. However, in the engineering design of furniture, it is necessary for designers to create joints with a specified strength. This study was undertaken accordingly, to obtain the strength of round tenon/round mortise, rectangular tenon/rectangular mortise and rectangular tenon/round mortise joints assembled under nominally identical conditions with different end configurations. In addition, each end configuration was compared at rail widths, each with 2 widths of tenon. The results showed that rectangular end mortise and tenons are about 15% stronger than both round end mortise …

A series of new electron rich olefins (=\overset{ } CNR(CH_2)_4\overset{ }NR)_2, 3, (a; R = CH_2C_6H_5, b; R = CH_2C_6H_4-OMe-p, c; R = CH_2C_6H_4-NMe_2-p) was generated via the condensation of RNH(CH_2)_4NHR with Me_2NCH (OMe)_2. The C=C bond cleavage reactions of 3 with S_8 and Se provide a simple and straightforward method for the synthesis of 1,3-diazepan-2-chalcogenones 4 and 5, respectively.
Facile Synthesis Of Hydantoin Derivatives Under Microwave Irradiation, Khalil Faghihi, Khosrow Zamani, Akbar Mobinikhaledi
Facile Synthesis Of Hydantoin Derivatives Under Microwave Irradiation, Khalil Faghihi, Khosrow Zamani, Akbar Mobinikhaledi
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The rapid and highly efficient synthesis of hydantoin derivatives 3(a-f) was achieved under microwave irradiation by using a domestic microwave oven from the reactions of cyanohydrin derivatives 2(a-f) with ammonium carbonate. The reaction proceeded rapidly (2-5 min.), and as a result a series of hydantoin derivatives 3(a-f) were obtained in high yields. All of the synthesized compounds were fully characterized by their melting point, ^1H-NMR, FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analyses. Cyanohydrin derivatives 2(a-f) were also prepared from the ketone derivatives 1(a-f) with potassium cyanide in the presence of sodium metabisulfite in an additional reaction.

Synthesis And Antinociceptive Activity Of 2-[(2-Oxobenzothiazolin-3-Yl)Methyl]- 5-Aminoalkyl/Aryl-1,3,4-Thiadiazole, Ti̇jen Önkol, Bi̇lge Çakir, M. Fethi̇ Şahi̇n, Engi̇n Yildirim, Kevser Erol
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Ten 2-[(2-oxobenzothiazolin-3-yl)methyl]-5-aminoalkyl/aryl-1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives were synthesized. The chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated by their FT-IR and ^1H-NMR spectral data, as well as their elemental analyses. The compounds were tested for antinociceptive activity. Among these compounds, 2-[(2-oxobenzothiazolin-3-yl)methyl]-5-aminomethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole (5a) was found to be significantly more active than the others and the standards in all the tests.
Purification And Characterization Of Pear (Pyrus Communis) Polyphenol Oxidase, Emi̇ne Zi̇yan, Şule Pekyardimci
Purification And Characterization Of Pear (Pyrus Communis) Polyphenol Oxidase, Emi̇ne Zi̇yan, Şule Pekyardimci
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Three isoenzymes of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) were isolated from a local pear variety (Ankara Armutu) through ammonium sulfate precipitation, dialysis and gel filtration. The sample obtained from dialysis after ammonium sulfate precipitation was used for characterization of the partially purified enzyme. Optimum pH values of PPO were 8.2 for pyrogallol, 7.2 for 4-methylcatechol, 7.0 for catechol, 5.6 for D-tyrosine, 5.0 for p-cresol and 4.8 for L-dopa. The optimum temperature of PPO was 35 °C with 4-methylcatechol. Catechol was oxidized more rapidly than the other substrates; however, 4-methylcatechol, chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid were also good substrates. The effect of 6 …

The Late Cenozoic evolution of the eastern Aegean is dominated by widespread continental extension. The most prominent structures are E-W- and NE-SW-trending grabens and intervening horsts, while NW-SE- and N-S-trending faults form the other less important structures. This paper documents the results of recent geological mapping and structural and stratigraphical analysis from the Halitpaşa half graben, which forms the northwestern continuation of the Gediz Graben. Field evidence for a new NW-SE-trending dextral wrench-dominated fault zone (here named the Halitpaşa transpression zone), which involved the thrusting of pre-Palaeogene basement onto Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene sediments, is presented. The fault zone is correlated …

Zebra Mussel And Fouling Problems In The Euphrates Basin, Alaeddi̇n Bobat, Mehmet Oğuz Hengi̇rmen, Walter Zapletal
Zebra Mussel And Fouling Problems In The Euphrates Basin, Alaeddi̇n Bobat, Mehmet Oğuz Hengi̇rmen, Walter Zapletal
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The Zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha Pallas, is one of the most important fouling organisms in freshwater ecosystems. Infestations by Zebra mussels have caused chronic problems in both raw water(incoming water into facilities) intakes and man-made structures such as water treatment facilities, power plants and industrial facilities. In the mid-1980s, this pest, a species nonindigenous to North American freshwaters, was introduced into the Great Lakes of North America. This introduction probably occurred by means of the ballast water of a transoceanic ship, and concern has focused again on this nuisance and its impact. Recently, the Zebra mussel, a species native to …
