The Impact Of Genomics And Genetics On Wheat Quality Improvement, John Snape, Lesley Fish, David Leader, Robert Bradburne, Adrian Turner Jan 2005

The Impact Of Genomics And Genetics On Wheat Quality Improvement, John Snape, Lesley Fish, David Leader, Robert Bradburne, Adrian Turner

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This paper discusses how genetic and genomic tools may be used to understand the genetical and molecular control of cereal quality and to develop tools for its manipulation by conventional and genetic engineering approaches. Comprehensive genetic maps are a first step in the genetical and molecular analysis of traits and these now allow the dissection of the genetical control of complex traits. As an example, data on the genetical control of grain protein content in UK winter wheats is presented. From a series of field trials, several potentially useful new QTLs were identified on chromosomes 2B, 5D, 6A, 6B, 7A …

Biotechnology Applications For Wheat Improvement At Cimmyt, Harindra Manilal William, Ravi Prakash Singh, Richard Trethowan, Maarten Van Ginkel, Alessandro Pellegrinshi, Julio Huerta-Espino, David Hoisington

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Despite the tremendous advances made by plant breeders in increasing the global food production, there is still a significant need for increased quantity and quality of food items in various regions of the world. Although this can be partially solved by upgrading the storage and distribution networks, crop performance and yield potentials are constantly challenged by various biotic and abiotic stress factors. As additional tools to facilitate the global wheat breeding efforts at CIMMYT, we have used molecular markers for characterizing loci that confer adult plant resistance to leaf rust and yellow (stripe) rust, which are globally important diseases in …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Co-Pb/Sba-15 Mesoporous Catalysts, Mukaddes Can, Burcu Akça, Ayşen Yilmaz, Deni̇z Üner Jan 2005

Synthesis And Characterization Of Co-Pb/Sba-15 Mesoporous Catalysts, Mukaddes Can, Burcu Akça, Ayşen Yilmaz, Deni̇z Üner

Turkish Journal of Physics

Pure SBA-15 and Co and/or Pb incorporated SBA-15 have been prepared by direct synthesis. The synthesized samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and N_2 adsorption isotherms. It is observed that the surface area of pure SBA-15 mesoporous structure slowly decreases by the addition of metal oxides. By the loading of 5, 10, 15 wt % Pb into SBA-15, no characteristic peaks of metal oxide observed in the large angle XRD pattern. But loading of 20 wt % Pb in SBA-15 shows more appreciable characteristic peaks, indicating small quantity of crystallites of metal oxide existing on the surface of silica. …

High Conducting Nanowires Obtained From Uniform Titanium Covered Carbon Nanotubes, Sefa Dağ, Engi̇n Durgun, Sali̇m Çiraci Jan 2005

High Conducting Nanowires Obtained From Uniform Titanium Covered Carbon Nanotubes, Sefa Dağ, Engi̇n Durgun, Sali̇m Çiraci

Turkish Journal of Physics

We have shown that Ti atoms can form continuous coating of carbon nanotubes at different amount of coverage. The circular cross section changes to a square-like form, and the semiconducting tube becomes ferromagnetic metal with high quantum ballistic conductance. Metallicity is induced not only by the metal-metal coupling, but also by the band gap closing of SWNT at the corners of the square. The magnetic properties of Ti coated tubes depend strongly on the geometry, amount of Ti coverage and also on the elastic deformation of the tube. While the magnetic moment can be pronounced significantly by the positive axial …

Photoluminescence Characterization Of Al/Al_2o_3/Inp Mis Structures Passivated By Anodic Oxidation, Abdelhakim Mahdjoub, Hadj Bourdoucen, Abdelkader Djelloul

Turkish Journal of Physics

Metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structures were produced by electron beam evaporation of Al_2O_3 on InP. Polyphosphate thin films of thickness 100-150 Å were used to passivate the interface InP\Insulator. Photoluminescence spectra are reported at low temperature at various stages of the realization process of the MIS-InP structure. Photoluminescence topography at ambient temperature made it possible to characterize the surface state after each technological stage. The interface degradation under the effect of repeated annealing is insignificant up to temperatures of 350 °C. Radiative major defects detected by photoluminescence spectrum with energy 0.95-1.15 eV attributed to the complexes impurities of phosphorus vacancies are substantially …

Sigma-Delta Voltage To Frequency Converter With Phase Modulation Possibility, Milan Stork Jan 2005

Sigma-Delta Voltage To Frequency Converter With Phase Modulation Possibility, Milan Stork

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Voltage to frequency converter (VFC) is an oscillator whose frequency is linearly proportional to control voltage. There are two common VFC architectures: the current steering multivibrator and the charge-balance VFC. For higher linearity, the charge-balancing method is preferred. The charge balanced VFC may be made in asynchronous or synchronous (clocked) forms. The synchronous charge balanced VFC or "sigma delta" (\Sigma-\Delta) VFC is used when output pulses are synchronized to a clock. The charge balance VFC is more complex, more demanding in its supply voltage and current requirements, and more accurate. It is capable of 16 to18 bit linearity. In this …
