Economic Power Dispatch Of Power Systems With Pollution Control Using Artificial Bee Colony Optimization, Linda Slimani, Tarek Bouktir

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a solution for the emission-controlled economic dispatch (ECED) problem of medium-sized power systems via an artificial bee colony algorithm. The ECED problem, which accounts for the minimization of both the fuel cost and the emission, is a multiple objective function problem. The objective is to minimize the total fuel cost of the generation and environmental pollution caused by fossil-based thermal generating units and to also maintain an acceptable system performance in terms of the limits on the generator's real and reactive power outputs, bus voltages, shunt capacitors/reactors, and power flow of transmission lines. The proposed algorithm is …

Preliminary Study On Acropora (Scleractinia: Astrocoeniina: Acroporidae) Of The Persian Gulf, With Emphasis On The North And Northeastern Areas, Mohammadreza Rahmani, Hassan Rahimian

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Due to a lack of adequate taxonomic information on Acropora Oken, 1815 species in the Persian Gulf, especially those inhabiting the coasts of the northern and northeastern areas, an appraisal of the diversity of this genus required comprehensive and careful examination of a large number of specimens. To satisfy such a need, 10-15 cm pieces of more than 1100 colonies of staghorn corals were collected from the subtidal zones of different islands. The specimens were studied using both light stereo and scanning electron microscopes and were identified with regional and global keys. During the study, 9 species of Acropora were …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The contents of the proximate composition of amino acids and fatty acids in the muscle of juvenile bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) and paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) that were fed with live feed for 60 days were assessed in this investigation. The moisture, crude protein, and crude ash contents of bighead carp muscle were slightly higher than those of paddlefish (P > 0.05). The crude fat content of paddlefish muscle was significantly higher than that of bighead carp (P < 0.01). Seventeen amino acids were detected in the muscle of both bighead carp and paddlefish. The total concentrations of amino acids (TAAs), essential amino acids (EAAs), and delicious amino acids (DAAs) in the muscle of bighead carp were higher than in those of paddlefish. Fifteen fatty acids were detected in both bighead carp and paddlefish muscles, including 5 saturated fatty acids (SFAs), 4 monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The concentrations of muscle \sum SFAs, \sum MUFAs, \sum PUFAs, \sum UFAs, \sum SFAs/\sum UFAs, \sum n-6 PUFAs, \sum n-3 PUFAs, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), EPA + docosahexenoic acid (DHA), essential fatty acids (EFAs), and half-essential fatty acids (HEFAs) in bighead carp were significantly lower than those in paddlefish (P < 0.01). In addition, bighead carp possessed significantly lower muscle \sum n-6 PUFAs/\sum n-3 PUFAs content than paddlefish did (P < 0.05). Muscle DHA content of bighead carp was higher than that of paddlefish (P < 0.05).

Stenochrus portoricensis is an alien species in temperate climates, and has been accidentally introduced to greenhouses via potted plants. Its parthenogenetic lifestyle allows for the easy transfer of populations to new locations and the successful founding of new colonies. New DNA sequence data for Stenochrus portoricensis are presented, which comprise a fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (DNA barcode sequence) from mitochondrial DNA, and a fragment of the …

Feeding Ecology Of Vimba (Vimba Vimba L., 1758) In Terms Of Size Groups And Seasons In Lake Sapanca, Northwestern Anatolia, Hacer Canan Okgerman, Cumhur Haldun Yardimci, Zeynep Dorak, Neşe Yilmaz Jan 2013

Feeding Ecology Of Vimba (Vimba Vimba L., 1758) In Terms Of Size Groups And Seasons In Lake Sapanca, Northwestern Anatolia, Hacer Canan Okgerman, Cumhur Haldun Yardimci, Zeynep Dorak, Neşe Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The seasonal changes of diet in the guts of 298 vimbas (Vimba vimba L.) caught on a monthly basis in Lake Sapanca from August 2003 to July 2004 were analyzed. V. vimba fed on ostracods, gastropods, Dreissena polymorpha (mollusks), fish larvae, macrophytes, oligochaetes, chironomids, phytoplankton, and detritus. The gut fullness index (GFI) indicated that vimbas increased their feeding activity in summer and decreased it in winter. The correlation between GFI and temperature was significant (0.839, P < 0.01). The water temperature shift was one of the critical environmental factors affecting the feeding of vimbas in Lake Sapanca. The lowest similarity of diet composition was between the juvenile vimbas in autumn and the adult vimbas in spring (cluster analysis), while the highest similarity of diet composition was between adult individuals in autumn and winter (cluster analysis). In both size groups and in all seasons, the main food items were macrophytes, D. polymorpha, and phytoplankton (particularly bacillariophytes). Of animal food items, adult individuals fed mostly on D. polymorpha, while ostracods were consumed only by juvenile fish in spring, summer, and autumn. The benthic-omnivorous strategy of vimba is demonstrated by the high abundance of plant foods in their guts, confirming this mixed type of diet.

Troughs are artificially transformed natural springs, underground waters, or related habitats. Some effects of such transformation are mentioned in a few studies, but there has been no extensive study on species composition and diversity in troughs. To contribute to the knowledge on the ostracods in troughs, we examined ostracod composition and diversity in 105 troughs from 6 provinces (Bolu, Erzincan, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Ordu, Van) in Turkey. The troughs were randomly visited between the years 2006 and 2010. A total of 32 ostracod species and a mean number of 2.16 species per trough were found. The most common 4 species (Heterocypris …

Factors Affecting Colostrum Quality Of Ewes And Immunostimulation, Özge Yilmaz, Güven Kaşikçi Jan 2013

Factors Affecting Colostrum Quality Of Ewes And Immunostimulation, Özge Yilmaz, Güven Kaşikçi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Maternal antibodies play a major role in the development of the immune system of a young animal. Ideally, the transmission of maternal immunity to the foetus occurs in the uterus. However, in ruminants, as there is no maternal antibody transfer from the mother to her young by way of the uterus, the antibodies present in the colostrum are a vital necessity for newborn ruminants. After birth, an unhealthy neonatal period for the young animal and an unhealthy puerperal period for the mother can cause significant financial losses. In animal husbandry, due to the budget allocated for the treatment of diseases …

Relationship Between Dead Pupa Removal And Season And Productivity Of Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera, Hymenoptera: Apidae) Colonies, Ahmet Güler, Hakan Toy

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to evaluate the dead pupae removal behaviour of 90 honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies during the beekeeping season and the relationships between removal and colony productivity. The liquid nitrogen technique was used in May, June, July, August, and September. The number of removed pupae was significantly (P < 0.01) correlated with the month and changed throughout the season. The highest cleaning efficiency of the colonies were recorded in July and September, and the lowest were in May and August. While the average dead pupae removal was 83.75% in the 90 colonies, the percentage of removed pupae varied between 56.4% and 99.3% during the 5 months. There were significant positive correlations between dead pupae removal and honey yield (P < 0.01; r = 0.295), bee wax production (P < 0.01; r = 0.334), and adult worker bee population (P < 0.05; r = 0.233). No correlation was found between dead pupae removal and brood production and average temperature. Although hygienic behaviour has positive effects on many characters relating to productivity in untreated breeding populations, it is affected by many biotic and abiotic factors. This behaviour decreases with many stressful conditions (wasps, Merops sp., predators, honey harvesting) and increases with colony strength during the season.

A New Model For Partial Immobilization Of Rat Hind Limb After Achilles Tendon Excision/Reinterposition, Cansin Güngörmüş, Mehmet Alper Çeti̇nkaya, Alper Demi̇rutku

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

There have been several attempts to repair the Achilles tendon by surgery or replacement with graft materials. Because tissue repair is a complex process, tendon healing occurs slowly. In rats, immobilization of the limb is essential during recovery. There are immobilization methods such as plaster or fiber casting. According to prolonged recovery, most of the procedures cause skin ulceration, decrease in weight, restrictions in checking the surgery area, and slipping out of the cast. Our aim was to apply a suture around the defect for immobilization. Tendons of 30 male Wistar rats (250 ± 50 g and aged 8 ± …

Shell Size Differences In Helix Lucorum Linnaeus, 1758 (Mollusca: Gastropoda) Between Natural And Urban Environments, Levan Mumladze

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Helix lucorum Linnaeus, 1758 is a large helicid snail widespread in Georgia. While its occurrences are mainly associated with human activity, it is frequently impacted by strong direct pressure, which could cause local extinctions of populations. Instead, H. lucorum populations in anthropogenic landscapes are usually dense and apparently well adapted. Morphometric studies were carried out on 12 populations from both anthropogenic and more natural habitats in a wide range of altitudes and climatic regimes in Georgia to investigate the effects of human pressure. Populations in more anthropogenic habitats have smaller adult shells independently of any effects of climate, altitude, or …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Six specimens of Podarcis siculus hieroglyphicus from Filyos, Zonguldak Province, in the western Black Sea region were collected. This new record extended eastward seriously (ca. 250 km) the known distribution area of the subspecies in Turkey. The meristic (pholidolial) and metric (morphometric) characters and color-pattern features of specimens collected from Filyos, Zonguldak, are given in detail and compared with the specimens from other known Turkish localities with regard to the literature. The specimens examined were similar to P. siculus hieroglyphicus specimens mentioned in the literature.
