Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The monomorphism of newly hatched chicks is a major hurdle for poultry farmers at the time of sexing. The traditional sexing techniques are inaccurate and time-consuming. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-based sex determination method to obtain a higher separation accuracy rate as compared to conventional methods. LAMP is a simple, quick, and relatively inexpensive diagnostic tool. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood samples of Leghorn and Korean native chicks for LAMP. Two sets of primer were designed, consisting of four isothermal amplification primers in each, to amplify the female sex-specific sequence (HUR0417) …

Morphology And Genetic Affinities Of A Novel Chattonella Isolate (Raphidophyceae) Isolated From Iran’S South Coast (Oman Sea), Gilan Attaran Fariman, Christopher John Stanley Bolch
Turkish Journal of Botany
The morphology and genetic affinity of a novel raphidophyte belonging to the genus Chattonella Biecheler is described for the first time from the Oman Sea along the south-east coast of Iran. While morphologically very similar to Chattonella subsalsa Biecheler, the Iranian isolates contain a distinct red eyespot. A comparison of LSU-rDNA and rDNA-ITS show that the Iranian isolate is genetically distinct from other Chattonella subsalsa strains isolated from across a wide global range and indicates that the Iranian isolates represent a distinct species related to Chattonella subsalsa.

On The Reconstruction Of Plant Photosynthetic And Stress Physiology Across The Triassic-Jurassic Boundary, Matthew Haworth, Angela Gallagher, Elysia Sum, Marlene Hill-Donnelly, Margret Steinthorsdottir, Jennifer Mcelwain
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Triassic-Jurassic boundary (TJB) coincides with major disruption to the carbon cycle and global warming as the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province developed. This resulted in both marine and terrestrial extinctions, with terrestrial plants thought to experience thermal stress as global temperatures and atmospheric CO_2 levels rose. As plant compression fossils typically only preserve external morphological features, it has not been possible to reconstruct plant paleophysiology in order to elucidate the mechanisms underlying plant stress and extinction. Here we present a new approach allowing us to infer the photosynthetic performance and stress physiology of fossil plants, applied to fossil Ginkgoales across …

Optimization Of Orius Majusculus Release: Photoperiodic Sensitivity At Different Temperatures And Storage Of Diapausing Adults, Şeri̇fe Ünal Bahşi̇, İrfan Tunç
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The photoperiodic sensitivity and storage of Orius majusculus (Reuter) from Antalya was investigated to obtain data for the optimization of its release. In the current study, it was not possible to induce a high (up to 100%) incidence of diapause unless all the nymphal instars and adults were successively exposed (i.e. full exposure) to a short day length (11.5 h) at constant temperatures of 18 and 26 °C, and fluctuating temperatures of 10/26 °C. Hence an intermittent exposure to long day lengths, even for short periods of time (only during instars IVV or adult stage), would avoid a high incidence …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Three new polysubstituted isoindole-1,3-diones were prepared from 2-ethyl-5-hydroxy-3a,4,5,7a-tetrahydro-isoindole-1,3-dione. The reaction of 2-ethyl-5-hydroxy-3a,4,5,7a-tetrahydro-isoindole-1,3-dione with m-CPBA gave the corresponding epoxide. The triacetate derivative was obtained via cis-hydroxylation using OsO_4, followed by acetylation. An aromatic derivative, a secondary reaction product, was also formed during the acetylation. Finally, a tricyclic derivative from 2-ethyl-5-hydroxy-3a,4,5,7a-tetrahydro-isoindole-1,3-dione was synthesized via dichloroketene addition under microwave irradiation. The exact structures of epoxide and tricyclic derivatives were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Deriving The Snel-Descartes Law For A Single Photon, Randy Wayne
Deriving The Snel-Descartes Law For A Single Photon, Randy Wayne
Turkish Journal of Physics
The laws of reflection and refraction are typically derived using a dispersion relation that assumes that the angular frequency stays the same across a vacuum--dielectric interface and that the angular wave number increases. At the single photon level, this means that the total energy of the photon is conserved but the linear momentum is not. Here I derive the laws of reflection and refraction for a single photon using a dispersion relation that is consistent with the conservation of both total energy and linear momentum. Imazamox is an herbicide intensively used in the peanut fields of Turkey. Carbon and nitrogen mineralizations were determined at 20 °C to evaluate the effects of the herbicide in soils humidified to 60% and 80% of field capacity (FC) over 45 days. Three doses of this herbicide [recommended dose (RD, 10 mg kg^{-1}), 2× RD, and 4× RD] were added to soils without any previous imazamox application (NI) and to peanut soils with previous applications of imazamox (I). Carbon mineralization, determined by CO2 respiration, at RD of I soil at 80% humidity was higher than that of the other herbicide …

A novel root inclusion net method was designed to determine the fine root productions and turnover rates of 13-, 22-, and 38-year-old Larix principis-rupprechtii plantations in the whole growing season of 2012, and it was compared with the results of the sequential coring method and in-growth core method. All following values are reported in order for 13-, 22-, and 38-year-old L. principis-rupprechtii plantations. The mean values of fine root biomasses were 103, 261, and 356 g m^{-2}, about 76-78% of which were live fine root biomasses. The fine root productions were 86-118 g m^{-2} year^{-1}, 124-138 g m^{-2} year^{-1}, and …

Seven different nonlinear height (h)-diameter (d) models were developed and compared for brutian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.), black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold), and Taurus cedar (Cedrus libani A.Rich.) in southern Turkey. Residual analysis was conducted to identify the error structure. A weighting factor of w_i =1/d was found to be appropriate for achieving the equal error variance assumption. The performance of the models was compared and evaluated based on 6 statistical criteria and residual analysis. Results suggested that the Gompertz model was superior to the other models in terms of its predictive ability. These tree species were located throughout the …
