Using Body Condition Index Can Be An Unreliable Indicator Of Fitness: A Case Of Sand Lizard Lacerta Agilis Linnaeus, 1758 (Sauria: Lacertidae), Krzysztof Dudek, Zofia Sajkowska, Monika Gawalek, Anna Ekner-Grzyb Jan 2015

Using Body Condition Index Can Be An Unreliable Indicator Of Fitness: A Case Of Sand Lizard Lacerta Agilis Linnaeus, 1758 (Sauria: Lacertidae), Krzysztof Dudek, Zofia Sajkowska, Monika Gawalek, Anna Ekner-Grzyb

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In ecological and morphological studies, researchers often use body condition index as a measure of an individual's fitness. Our research shows that body condition index may be an unreliable method for this purpose, because changes in lizards' body proportions are not stable during their lifetime. Results obtained from a Polish population of the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) show that the body length increases faster than the body mass, meaning that the correlation between these 2 parameters is not linear. Herpetologists frequently use the body condition index to compare the fitness of lizards of different ages. Our study demonstrates that this …

Mechanisms Of Pluripotency And Epigenetic Reprogramming In Primordial Germ Cells: Lessons For The Conversion Of Other Cell Types Into The Stem Cell Lineage, Suresh Palamadai Krishnan

Turkish Journal of Biology

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) provide an excellent tool to better understand ancestor?descendent relationships as well as the efficiency and molecular mechanisms governing pluripotency in the reprogramming of somatic cells, since the latter type of cells have a relatively lower efficiency of conversion to pluripotent cells. This kind of comparison has gained credence from the commonalities regarding the expression of key transcription factors such as octamer-binding transcriptionhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcription_factor factor-4 (Oct3/4), SRY-related HMG box (Sox2), myelocytomatosis (c-Myc), and Nanog, as well as redundancy in terms of Kruppel-like factor 2 (Klf2), Kruppel-like factor 5 (Klf5), estrogen-related receptor beta (Esrrb), and estrogen-related receptor gamma (Esrrg) …

Investigation Of The In Vivo Interaction Between Ss-Lactamase And Its Inhibitor Protein, Ni̇lay Büdeyri̇ Gökgöz, Si̇may Yalaz, Naze Gül Avci, Gi̇zem Buldum, Eli̇f Özkirimli Ölmez, Berna Sariyar Akbulut

Turkish Journal of Biology

The affinity of ß-lactamase inhibitory protein (BLIP) for TEM-1 ß-lactamase has raised hopes in the challenge of protein-based inhibitor discovery for ß-lactamase-mediated antibiotic resistance. Currently, the effect of the formation of the ß-lactamase:BLIP complex in vivo in ß-lactam resistant bacteria is an open question. The scarcity of information to the extent to which BLIP can impair ß-lactamase activity inside cells has urged us to assess the in vivo efficacy of BLIP as a potent ß-lactamase inhibitor. To this end, ß-lactamase and BLIP were coexpressed in Escherichia coli. Simultaneous expression of ß-lactamase and BLIP and the formation of the TEM-1 ß-lactamase:BLIP …

Phylogenetic Relationships Among Populations Of Pristurus Rupestris Blanford,1874 (Sauria: Sphaerodactylidae) In Southern Iran, Sugol Yousofi, Eskandar Rastegar Pouyani, Vida Hojati

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We examined intraspecific relationships of the subspecies Pristurus rupestris iranicus from the northern Persian Gulf area (Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces). Phylogenetic relationships among these samples were estimated based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. We used three methods of phylogenetic tree reconstruction (maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference). The sampled populations were divided into 5 clades but exhibit little genetic divergence between populations, suggesting that these all represent a single species and subspecies. The low genetic divergences suggest that the species may have expanded its range within Iran since the last drying period of the Persian …
