The concept of species richness is currently the most basic and most often used parameter in quantitative assessments of biodiversity. The species richness of Lumbricidae was investigated in East Serbia, one of the highly complex areas in the eastern and central part of the Balkan Peninsula. Our database included 2615 individuals from a total of 54 species. Quantification of species richness was done by using the observed number of species and richness estimators. A nonparametric approach was used to evaluate the performance of various estimation techniques: Chao 2, Jackknife 2, and Bootstrap. However, only Chao 2 reached the asymptote, maintaining …

Capoeta aydinensis sp. nov. is described from the Büyük Menderes River and the streams Tersakan, Dalaman, and Namnam in southwestern Turkey. It is distinguished from all other Anatolian Capoeta species by the following combination of characters: one pair of barbels; a plain brownish body coloration; a well-developed keel in front of the dorsal-fin origin; a slightly arched mouth; a slightly convex lower jaw with a well-developed keratinized edge; a weakly ossified last simple dorsal-fin ray, serrated along about 60%-70% of its length, with 14-20 serrae along its posterior edge; 58-71 total lateral line scales; 11-12 scale rows between lateral line …

In this paper, Eupithecia opistographata Dietze, 1906 is reported as new for the fauna of Turkey, and three rare species (E. brunneata Staudinger, 1900; E. dearmata Dietze, 1904; and E. marasa Wehrli, 1932) are presented as second records on the basis of specimens collected in the mountainous areas of Siirt Province and Şirvan District, southeastern Turkey. The adults and the male genitalia of the species are illustrated.

The current work was aimed at studying the biology of Axinoscymnus apioides Kuznetsov & Ren (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) under different temperature regimes. These studies were performed at 6 constant temperature regimes (17, 20, 23, 26, 29, and 32 °C) under laboratory conditions in which A. apioides was fed with Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) nymphs on Hibiscus rosa-sinensis plants. Results indicated that the developmental period for different immature stages decreased with increases in temperature from 17 to 29 °C. The olive moth, Prays oleae (Bernard) (Lepidoptera: Praydidae), is one of the most important pests of olive trees throughout the Mediterranean region, the Black Sea, the Middle East, and the Canary Islands. Climate change is considered to be one of the greatest threats to biodiversity in this century, especially for range-restricted island species. This study explored the potential effects of climate change on Arborophila crudigularis, a weak-flying endemic bird species in Taiwan. The potential effects of climate change on climatically suitable habitat for A. crudigularis were analyzed in biomod2 and ArcGIS software. Future climate change could increase the availability of climatically suitable habitat for A. crudigularis while decreasing the mean suitability for both the entire suitable area and the area with known presence records. This study was carried out on a young European Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) caught in the sea in Akçay, Balıkesir, in August 2015. The lice collected from the European Shag were put into 70% alcohol solution and were mounted to slides with Canada balsam after being made transparent in 10% potassium hydroxide. The lice Eidmanniella pellucida and Pectinopygus brevicornis were determined as a result of the microscopic examination of the 54 louse specimens. Tardigrade studies in Poland have been carried out for more than a century and to date, 102 species have been reported from this central European country. This constitutes nearly 9% of all known species within the phylum. Although previous studies have been thorough, a number of taxa now known to belong to species complexes have been treated in only a very general way. The phytophagous chalcid wasp Bruchophagus sophorae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Eurytomidae) is redescribed and illustrated. B. sophorae is recorded for the first time in Turkey and France, from seeds of Styphnolobium japonicum, and from Kazakhstan, from seeds of a new host plant, Sophora alopecuroides. New data on the biology, the stages of oviposition, and the distribution are given. Details of the oviposition of B. sophorae into the pods of S. japonicum are described for the first time.

A catalogue of the terrestrial Eudrilidae and Megascolecidae is provided, with 10 genera and 18 species reported to date from South America. In addition, we provide the valid names, their synonyms, and the original citation. Eudrilidae and Megascolecidae contain members that have a global distribution, probably as a result of human dispersion. The species of eudrilid Eudrilus eugeniae is very common in other regions with a tropical climate, while the megascolecid species Amynthas gracilis is by far the most common earthworm in large cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Rose gall wasps (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Diplolepidini) are well-known gall-inducing insects on Rosa species, and their galls support species-rich communities. During this investigation, gall samples of Diplolepis fructuum and D. rosae, which are the two most common rose gall wasps in Turkey, were collected in Gümüşhane, Tokat, Sivas, and Erzincan provinces. Fifteen species associated with D. fructuum and 12 species associated with D. rosae were reared. These community members are mostly primary and secondary parasitoids, along with seed- and gall-tissue?feeders. In this paper, we present the current knowledge on earthworm diversity and zoogeography of Yıldız (Strandja) Mountain in Bulgaria and Turkey. During the investigation in 2015 and 2016, 8 earthworm species altogether were registered. Murchieona minuscula proved to be new to the earthworm fauna of Bulgaria. In addition, there were 4 taxa recorded for the first time from Yıldız (Strandja) Mountain: Aporrectodea jassyensis, Aporrectodea rosea, Octolasion lacteum, and Proctodrilus tuberculatus. The hitherto unknown worker caste of C. oertzeni is recorded and described for the first time. Our queen and male specimens have some differences from the typical C. oertzeni specimens. Genetic markers are a useful tool for bird population monitoring, especially when combined with ringing data, and particularly so in vulnerable species. This study compared the effectiveness of two DNA extraction methods: a standard protocol and a commercially available kit. The molecular sex-typing was performed using PCR-based methods with a 2550F/2718R set of primers in three species of herons: Great Egret, Purple Heron, and Grey Heron. Genomic DNA was isolated from feathers, eggshells, and eggshell swabs from 26 individuals. Overall, better DNA yields and purity were obtained by using the standard protocol isolation method. A study was conducted to evaluate the use of exogenous enzymes as a potential means of improving the cell wall degradation of rice straw. The enzymes used for in vitro incubations were characterized for cellulase (CE) and xylanase (XY). Enzymes were supplemented alone (CE or XY) and as a mixture (CE + XY) in a 1:1 ratio. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and clonal typing of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli in healthy broilers in Turkey. Three hundred broiler cloacal samples were collected from various broiler slaughterhouses and inoculated on Levine agar plates supplemented with 2 μg/mL cefotaxime. Suspected strains were identified using a BBL Crystal Enteric/Nonfermenter ID Kit (Becton Dickinson, USA) and ESBL production was confirmed using an ESBL phenotypic confirmatory test. This study was conducted to quantify endometrial and luteal changes in early pregnant and cyclic cows by ODI analysis. In this study, it was aimed to determine the influence of applying Nigella sativa (NS) and Hypericum perforatum (HP) on wound healing. A total of 42 female albino 2-month-old Wistar rats were randomly separated into 3 main groups. Each of these main groups was separated into two subgroups for 7- and 14-day postoperative follow-ups. The current study describes the use of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein (IL-1Ra) as a possible strategy for optimizing tendon healing and repair by presenting histologically visible changes in rabbit Achilles tendon tissue after longitudinal tenotomy. The study was carried out on 26 Californian rabbits divided into two equal groups. One was the experimental IRAP (interleukin-1 receptor antagonist) group and the second one was the PBS (purified buffered saline) group. The PBS group was the control group. The role of the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system in the genesis of hypertension between nonhunting dogs and hunting dogs of various breeds was comparatively studied in the city of Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Sixty dogs were divided into four subgroups based on different age categories. Hypertension was recorded in 21 dogs or in 35% of examined dogs. Fourteen dogs had mild (23.3%), 5 dogs had moderate (8.3%), and 2 dogs had severe hypertension (3.3%). The most cases of hypertension (n = 9) were recorded in hunting dogs aged from 9 to 12 years. Primary goat synovial cells were developed to be cocultivated with caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV)-infected monocytes. Two CAEV-seropositive goats and one CAEV-seronegative goat were confirmed for viral particles in the blood using the PCR method. Thereafter, heparinized blood samples from the three goats were collected and isolated for monocytes, which were further cultivated to differentiate into macrophages. Cultivated macrophages of 7-10 days old were cocultivated with the primary goat synovial cells for 7 days. This study was planned to determine the prevalences of the Nosema spp. and the black queen-cell virus (BQCV) among honeybees (Apis mellifera) raised in the province of Van by PCR and to determine the molecular characteristics of the determined isolates. In this study, the impacts of some materials (oxalic acid, thymol, and potassium citrate) on the survival of honey bees and some quality parameters were investigated under laboratory conditions. The purpose of this study was to typify goat cheese and determine the relationship among climatic factors, production systems, milk quality, and their impact on the physicochemical, instrumental, and sensory properties and consumer preference by path models. Using the regression partial least square technique coupled to multiple factor analysis, two models were established. Bovine papillomatosis is a common viral disease of cattle but is relatively less common in buffaloes. Bovine papilloma virus (BPV) -1 and -2 are mostly associated with cutaneous warts in buffaloes. The aim of the present work was to study the pathomorphology and association of different BPV types in buffalo cutaneous warts. A total of 10 cases were included in the present study, which revealed that growths were either single or multiple, variable in shape and size, and present at different body sites.
