The development of transgenic potatoes is imperative to investigate various gene functions as well as to develop robust potato varieties resistant to different biotic and abiotic stresses. Directing a potato breeding program from cultivated tetraploids to self-compatible diploid lines will be highly helpful for potato breeders. Preparation, Structure Elucidation, And Antioxidant Activity Of New Bis(Thiosemicarbazone) Derivatives, Hasan Yakan

Schiff-base-bearing new bis(thiosemicarbazone) derivatives were prepared from terephthalaldehyde and various thiosemicarbazides. FT--IR,$^{\, 1}$H NMR, $^{13}$C NMR, and UV--Vis spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis were used to elucidate the identification of the synthesized molecules. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the synthesized compounds was analysed with the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl free-radical-trapping process. The synthesized compounds exhibited lower antioxidant activity than the standard ascorbic acid. IC$_{50}$ values of the synthesized molecules measured from 3.81 $\pm $ 0.01 to 29.05 $\pm $ 0.11 $\mu$M. Among the synthesized compounds, compound 3 had the best antioxidant activity. In this study, phase separation of colloidal whey protein isolate (WPI) particle dispersions was studied using a rod-like polysaccharide xanthan. Effects of different xanthan concentration, particle volume fraction, and temperature were analyzed by visual observations, turbidity measurements, and particle mobility tracking method. Particle mobility was determined using a diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) set up. Xanthan concentration was kept low in order not to increase the viscosity of dispersions, so that the phase separation could be observed easily. In this study, silver nanoparticle (AgNP) synthesis was carried out using Onosma sericeum Willd. aqueous extract for the first time, with a simple, economical, and green method without the need for any other organic solvent or external reducing or stabilizing agent. A variety of AgNPs, all of different particle sizes, were synthesized by controlling the silver ion concentration, extract volume, temperature, and pH. N-(1-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-3-oxo-3-((4-(N-(substituted)sulfamoyl)phenyl)amino)prop-1-en-1-yl)benzamides 3a - g were designed since sulfonamide and benzamide pharmacophores draw great attention in novel drug design due to their wide range of bioactivities including acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and human carbonic anhydrase I and II (hCA I and hCA II) inhibitory potencies. Structure elucidation of the compounds was carried out by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS spectra. In vitro enzyme assays showed that the compounds had significant inhibitory potential against hCA I, hCA II, and AChE enzymes at nanomolar levels. In this study, a group of 4-substituted benzoyltaurinamide derivatives were designed, synthesized, and investigated for their anticancer activity against three cancer cell lines and one nontumorigenic cell line by MTT assay. Among the final compounds, methoxyphenyl derivatives 14, 15, 16 were found to be effective against all the tested cancerous cell lines with promising selectivity. The most active compounds were further evaluated to determine the molecular mechanism of their anticancer activity by using western blot assay and the Annexin V-FITC/PI test. Nitrogen-doped carbon nanodots (CDs) were prepared via the solvothermal method, using urea and triethylene glycol as the starting materials. The as-prepared CDs had individual diameters of approximately 100 nm and were in clusters of different sizes. The surface composition and optical properties of the as-prepared CDs were characterized. They exhibited multicolor emission properties in the visible range when excited with a wide wavelength range. The aqueous solution of the CDs was used in highly sensitive tartrazine determination. Choline derivatives were covalently immobilized on the surface of γ -aminated silica. The obtained immobilized choline derivative was then successfully used for a transesterification reaction to produce glycerophosphocholine (GPC). Fourier transform infrared analysis and thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal gravimetry indicated that the surface of the γ -aminated silica was covered by choline derivatives and the highest immobilization amount reached 1.1 mmol/g under optimal conditions. More importantly, the highest yield of GPC reached 97.9% during transesterification. The role of thiamine (THI)-induced nitric oxide (NO) synthesis in the improvement of tolerance to boron (B) toxicity in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) was studied. A solution of THI (50 or 100 mg L-1) was sprayed to the foliage of pepper plants exposed to high B regime (2.0 mM H3BO3) once a week for 4 weeks. A scavenger of NO (0.1 mM), cPTIO, along with THI was sprayed once a week to ascertain whether or not endogenous NO played a role in the alleviation of B stress in pepper plants by THI. A Kunitz-type trypsin inhibitor protein has been purified and characterized from seeds of Acacia nilotica L. LC-MS/MS analysis of Acacia nilotica trypsin inhibitor (AnTI) provided the N-terminal fragment of 11 amino acids which yielded 100% identity with already reported Kunitz-type trypsin inhibitor protein of Acacia confusa (AcTI) in UniProtKB database search. SDS-PAGE showed a single band of ~21 kDa under nonreduced condition and appearance of a daughter band (17 kDa) in the presence of ß-mercaptoethanol indicating the presence of interchain disulfide linkage typical for Kunitz-type trypsin inhibitors. Ferulic acid (FA; 3-methoxy-4-hydroxycinnamic acid) can eliminate stress-induced damage because of its ability to induce antioxidant activity under stress. The aim of this study was to identify the effects of FA on water status, antioxidant system, and lipid peroxidation in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) roots exposed to boron (B) stress. Plants were grown in hydroponic culture containing the combination or alone form of 25-75 µM FA and 4-8 mM B. Stress significantly decreased growth (RGR), water content (RWC), proline content (Pro), and osmotic potential (YP). However, FA alleviated the decrease in RGR, RWC, and Pro content. This study was carried out to investigate the ameliorative effects of salt pretreatment against B toxicity in two sunflower cultivars (Helianthus annuus L. `Sanbro? and `Tarsan-1018?) differing in salt tolerance. Seedlings were grown in perlite with modified half-strength Hoagland?s solution for 15 days and then they were divided into two groups: salt-pretreated (75 mM NaCl for 5 days) and B-treated (control, 2, 4, and 8 mM B for 10 days). We studied the application of the neglected name Centaurea leucolepis DC., concluding, by examination of the literature and original material, that the associated taxon is C. corensis Vals. et Filig., endemic to Campania region (southern Italy) and introduced into Sardinia. The name by Candolle is legitimate and it is here lectotypified by a specimen kept at G. In addition, after field surveys and herbarium searches, we suggest that this taxon should be considered as a subspecies of C. deusta Ten., a very polymorphic species of south-eastern Europe, proposing a new combination and providing a detailed description. Nutlets of 13 taxa of subfamily Cyperoideae (Cyperaceae) from Egypt were investigated using light and scanning electron microscopes to ascertain the taxonomic utility of the nutlet in corroborating and elaborating on distinctions between closely related genera and species. The studied taxa included representatives of tribes Fuireneae, Cypereae, Cariceae, Abildgaardieae and Schoeneae. Nutlet shape, size, color, surface, epidermal cell shape, anticlinal boundaries, outer periclinal cell wall and relief of outer cell walls were provided. It is important to understand how woody species are affected by elevated in-soil CO2 for carbon capture and storage (CCS). A study was conducted to analyze the effects of artificially released in-soil CO2 on the physiology and growth of 4-year-old Pinus densiflora and 3-year-old Quercus variabilis seedlings. Approximately 7.9 kg CO2 plot-1 d-1 was released at a depth of 0.5 m over the period from 20 June to 20 July 2017. The chemical composition and the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of essential oils from two Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G.Don subspecies grown in Bulgaria were investigated. As a result, 95 compounds with concentrations above 0.05% were detected by GC/MS and 46 of them, mainly mono- and sesquiterpenes, representing 79.81% and 85.51% of the total content of the samples, were identified. The main constituents of the essential oil from Helichrysum italicum subsp. microphyllum (plant origin from Bosnia) were monoterpene α-pinene (20.84%) and sesquiterpene γ-curcumene (16.53%), followed by β-selinene (5.59%), ar-curcumene (4.39%), trans-caryophyllene (4.35%), β-diketone italidione I (4.32%), α-selinene (4.28%), and neryl acetate (3.81%). …

In this study, changes in some horticultural characteristics of jujube fruits at two ripening stages were investigated. The ripening stages were determined by reference degree (%) of the red zone on the surface of the fruit: white ripening stage (WR), 5-15%; red ripening stage (RR), 95-100%. Fruit weight, length, width, color, and firmness were examined as morphological characteristics; phenolics, organic acids, fatty acids, and sugars were evaluated as biochemical characteristics. The volatile components of essential oil (EO), SPME, and SPME of solvent extracts (n-hexane, methanol, and water) obtained from fresh Serapias orientalis subsp. orientalis(Soo) were analyzed by GC-FID/MS. EO of Soo gave 11 compounds in the percentage of 99.97%; capronaldehyde (37.01%), 2-(E)-hexenal (23.19%), and n-nonanal (19.05%) were found to be major constituents. SPME GC-FID/MS analyses of fresh plant and solvent extracts of Soo revealed 7, 12, 7, and 4 compounds within the range of 99.7% to 99.9%. Limonene (76.5%, 41.7%, and 61.3%) was the major compound in SPMEs of the n-hexane and methanol extracts. α-Methoxy-p-cresol (52.9%) was the main component …

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are byproducts of normal plant metabolism and their production is elevated under environmental stresses such as drought, extreme temperature, and salinity. Among these, salinity is a worldwide problem that impacts the fertility of arable lands and sustainability of food security, which is getting more attention due to climate change. This study aimed to assess the effect of cadmium (Cd2+) concentrations on biovolume, pigments, malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide, proline, total phenolic compounds, total protein, and total carbohydrate contents of Cladophora glomerata . Cultivations of the alga (8.0 ± 0.1 g as fresh weight) were exposed to 7.5, 15, 30, and 60 mg/L of Cd2+ ions in 500 mL flasks containing 400 mL of the medium on a shaker at 120 rpm for 7 days. Chromosomal data can provide very valuable information about karyotypic phylogeny and speciation. This is the first study on karyotype phylogeny and polyploidy variations of the genus Paronychia. In this context, the results are these: (1) in 14 taxa, the first report on chromosomes numbers; (2) in 2 taxa, equal chromosome numbers as in the previous report; (3) in all taxa, the first report of detailed karyotype analyses; (4) karyotype asymmetry data and generally symmetrical karyotypes; (5) karyotypic variations by mechanisms of dysploidy and polyploidy; and (6) phylogenetic relationships in Paronychia. An integrated approach to the study of taxa of the genus Hypericum occurring in Sicily is proposed. The results of morphological, biochemical, and molecular analyses are combined to better assess the relationships between the species investigated and test the suitability of DNA barcoding technique in the discrimination of these taxa. For the name Hypericum aegypticum subsp. webbii (Spach) N. Robson a lectotype is designated. For Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra a lectotype and a supporting epitype are designated.
