Shoot Organogenesis And Plant Regeneration In Begonia Coptidifolia, Beiyi Guo, Yuping Xiong, Hai Ren, Teng Wu, Jaime A. Teixeira Da Silva, Songjun Zeng, Guohua Ma
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
An efficient regeneration protocol was established for a rare plant species, Begonia coptidifolia. Using leaf explants, adventitious shoots were induced on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium using various concentrations (1.0-10.0 mM) of three cytokinins, 6-benzyladenine (BA), thidiazuron (TDZ) and kinetin (KIN). However, adventitious shoots could not be induced on MS medium supplemented with auxins [α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) or 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)] tested in the 1.0-10.0 mM range. The highest number of shoots per explant (31.2) was induced on MS medium with 5.0 mM BA and 1.0 mM NAA. Although roots were induced in ½MS medium free of plant growth …

Overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant cells under environmental stress cause oxidative stress, which is one of major factors limiting the plant productivity. To prevent this limitation by stress conditions, a possible strategy is to strengthen the antioxidant defense of plants by gene manipulation of antioxidant enzymes and low molecular-weight (LMW) antioxidants. LMW antioxidants are important for the plant protection to environmental stress and also have nutritional merits for humans as antiaging and antidisease molecules. Sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] as a nutritional food crop has many advantages in terms of the cultivation on the global marginal lands. …

Functional Fingerprinting Estimates Renewal Opportunities For Tree Species In A Mixed Turkey Oak Forest, Éva Salamon Albert, Ágnes Csiszár, Dénes Bartha
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Maintaining and managing trees with different ecological plasticity under climate conditions aggravated by short-term variability are major challenges for foresters. Our aims were to investigate species-specific ecophysiological responses of canopy trees in a mixed Turkey oak forest during their early-phase regeneration. We measured plant carbon and water exchange with portable IRGA equipment under natural field conditions (canopy gap) and in a climate-controlled (standardized) environment. We analyzed variability and differences in plant gas exchange in relation to important abiotic site parameters and the species. Assimilation, stomatal conductance, and intrinsic water use were applied as calibrating parameters for plant functional fingerprinting to …

Tomato leaf miner is an aggressive and invasive pest that causes serious damage in tomato production, resulting in up to 100% yield losses during serious outbreaks. The management of tomato leaf miner with synthetic pesticides is difficult due to its leaf mining habit, short life span, high reproductive rates, and insecticide resistance problem. In this study, sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI) gene of Tuta absoluta specimens were analyzed and compared with the available COI sequence data members from GenBank. All the specimens of tomato leaf miner were clustered together in a single group with a high support …

Refining A Protocol For Somatic Embryogenesis And Plant Regeneration Of Phalaenopsis Amabilis Cv. Jinan From Mature Tissues, Reza Ghahremani, Shirin Dianati Daylami, Masoud Mirmasoumi, Naser Askari, Kourosh Vahdati
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Phalaenopsis is one of the most remarkable commercial genera in Orchidaceae family. Using immature explants for tissue culture of orchid results in undesired characteristics such as genetic variation and long-lasting juvenility. In this study, we optimized a protocol for somatic embryogenesis of Phalaenopsis amabilis cv. Jinan, by using mature thin cell layer (TCL) explants to minimize immature explant limitations. We examined somatic embryogenesis from two types of mature explants, viz. leaf lTCL and flower stalk nodes tTCL at various concentrations of thidiazuron (TDZ) (0, 1, 2, and 3 mg L-1). The results demonstrated that lTCL explants cultured on medium supplemented …

Hydropriming Associated Physiological And Biochemical Changes Responsible For The Enhanced Planting Value Of Maize Hybrid And Its Parental Line Seeds, Heena Rasool Mir, Shiv Yadav, Sangita Yadav
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Hydropriming has the potential to ameliorate the stress-induced ill effects on yields of the crop plants and quality of seed produced. In the present study, half of the fresh seeds of maize hybrid, PEHM 5 and its parental lines (Female - CM 150, Male - CM 151) were subjected to accelerated aging test for bringing down the viability and vigour, thereby creating low vigour lots while high vigour lots consisted of fresh seeds, which were hydroprimed (30 h at 25 °C). Half of the hydroprimed seeds were surface dried while the other half were redried back to the original moisture …

Open-field farming involves successive major processes such as preparation of soil, planting the seed, adding pesticides and fertilizers, irrigation, cultivation, and harvest. The main aim of all processes is to achieve maximum yield out of the available agricul-tural landscape. It is necessary to collect geo-referenced descriptive data on soil characteristics, such as soil penetration resistance and electrical conductivity before starting all these processes. In this context, agricultural robots offer highly promising technologies provid-ing valuable soil data, lower production costs, reduced manual labour, and maximum crop efficiency. The aim of this study is to design and develop a combined sensor platform …

Phosphorus Sorption By Gyttja And Its Effect On The Ph Value And Phosphorus In Acidic Soils, Kadir Saltali, Ahmet Nedi̇rli̇
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Tea and hazelnut cultivated soils are mainly distributed in Black Sea region of Turkey. Low pH value is a primary problem for those soils; therefore, farmers apply lime once every 3-4 years to raise the pH value of soil. Gyttja is highly rich in organic matter (40.59%) and lime (45.67%), and it is a low cost and considerably abundant in Afşin-Elbistan Coal Basin (estimated reserve is around 4.8 billion tons). The aim of this study was to determine the phosphorus (P) sorption characteristics of gyttja, and its efficiency on P availability and soil's pH value. Optimum P sorption conditions (pH, …

Cotton is an essential fiber producing crop in the world. It also supports additional industries by providing high quality oil and protein in the form of cottonseed cake. Currently, there is an urgent need to increase lint yield, fiber quality, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses due to rising pressure from a global population and possible supply shortages from the effects of erratic climate changes. Classic plant breeding and transgenic strategies need more genetic breakthroughs to support the increasing pressure for fiber quantity and quality. A potential for rapid increases in crop improvement is in various state-of-the-art gene editing …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Dry bean (phaseolus vulgaris L.) field experiment was carried out under the subhumid climatic conditions of Bafra, Turkey, to evaluate the possibilities of using hyperspectral reflectance data for estimating yield and water consumption. Three irrigation management treatments that depend on monitoring soil water content and one rain-fed treatment were subjected to dry beans arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In addition to soil water measurements, hyperspectral reflectance observations were made throughout the dry beans? growing season. Actual crop evapotranspiration values were calculated by using a detailed soil water balance approach. After smoothing the hyperspectral reflectance data, …
