Evidence-Based Information About Intermittent Fasting In Diabetes Patients: Useful Or Harmful?, Mustafa Altay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: One of the most important components of treatment for diabetic patients is diet and healthy nutrition therapy. Calorie restriction is effective and without cost increases its appeal for both patients and physicians. Unfortunately, continuous calorie restriction is a difficult method. For this reason, alternative calorie restriction methods, such as intermittent fasting (IF), have been investigated by some researchers. Materials and methods: IF refers to a wide range of diet programmes covering periods of eating and fasting, which vary according to the different regimens. In this article, first, some general information will enable us to understand the concept of IF, …

Background/aim: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is a common clinical problem that often occurs in the first hours of life. Although it is considered to be a benign clinical course, some cases may have severe symptoms and require ventilation support. In this study, we aimed to determine the association between the mean platelet volume (MPV), nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs), right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), and the severity of TTN. Materials and methods: Patients with TTN were divided into two groups according to Silverman score (

Hematological Status Of Avian Species Along A Metal Pollution Gradient At Sialkot, Pakistan, Ajmal Shehzad, Khalid Mahmood Anjum, Atif Yaqub, Muhammad Zubair Yousaf, Sarwr Allah Ditta, Junaid Naseer Jan 2022

Hematological Status Of Avian Species Along A Metal Pollution Gradient At Sialkot, Pakistan, Ajmal Shehzad, Khalid Mahmood Anjum, Atif Yaqub, Muhammad Zubair Yousaf, Sarwr Allah Ditta, Junaid Naseer

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The concentration of metals and effects of these metals on hematological parameters were examined in avian species by using feathers and blood samples collected from different sites of Sialkot. The major reason for significant differences in hematological parameters and concentrations of metal contents between different species was the difference in feeding habitat. Metal concentrations in feathers and blood samples indicated that the chromium and lead were not found at a safe level. The results did not revealed a significant negative association between metal contents and hematological parameters but concluded that increased metal contents exert negative effects on hematological status especially …

Androgenic Hormones In Crustacean Aquaculture: A Review, Muzaffer Mustafa Harlioğlu, Ardavan Farhadi̇ Jan 2022

Androgenic Hormones In Crustacean Aquaculture: A Review, Muzaffer Mustafa Harlioğlu, Ardavan Farhadi̇

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Increased demands of the seafood market have led to the rapid growth in crustacean aquaculture production in various parts of the world. Therefore, an expansion in the knowledge of the reproductive biology of crustaceans has become more important. Hormones released from the androgenic gland (AG) in crustaceans are liable for both the separation of primary and secondary sexual features and reproductive behavior. AG removal in male crustaceans causes a transformation of the intersex animals towards the females and a degeneration of spermatids and reproductive organs. AG implantation and injection of AG extracts are common approaches for crustacean masculinization. In this …
