Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The effect of increasing concentrations of zinc (Zn) on NaCl toxicity was studied in pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Kahramanmaras-3) plants grown in a growth chamber under controlled conditions. Plants were grown in severely Zn-deficient soil with increasing Zn (0, 2, and 10 mg Zn kg^{-1} soil) and NaCl (0%, 0.5% and 1.5% NaCl in irrigation water) treatments. After 46 days of growth, the plants were harvested and the shoots were analyzed for dry matter production, concentrations of Zn, sodium (Na), potassium (K), and phosphorous (P), and K/Na ratios. The results showed that Zn deficiency in soil significantly reduced shoot …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In an 83-day-nutrition trial, effects of feed production technique and feeding frequency on feed intake, growth and nutrient utilization were determined in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Three thousand six hundred fish (170 ± 2.6 g) were randomly allocated to experimental sea cages (approx. 5800 l) according to a 2 x 2 experimental plan [2 processing techniques: steam pelleted diet (P) vs. extruded diet (E); 2 feeding frequencies: twice (2) vs. 3 times (3)]. The P3 group consumed significantly (P < 0.05) more feed than the fish fed extruded diets, irrespective of feeding frequency. Growth rates of all groups did not display any significant difference (P > 0.05) in terms of final weight (FW) or specific growth rate (SGR), although there was a decreasing trend in final …

Does Early Enteral Feeding Affect Clinical Outcome Or Cytokine Profiles After Elective Surgery For Colorectal Cancer?, Elizabeth Anne Baker, Lynne Williams, Sanaa El-Gaddal, Fintan Bergin, David John Leaper
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Patients who have intestinal cancer are prone to malnutrition, which can result in deterioration of physiological function, poor wound healing, increased risk of infection and prolonged hospital stay. These complications are particularly relevant after colorectal surgery. Early enteral feeding, to enhance nutritional status, has been reported to reduce post-operative complications, length of hospital stay and morbidity and mortality after upper gastro-intestinal cancer surgery. Inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-a (\alpha)), clinical outcomes and postoperative complications were measured in 147 patients undergoing elective surgery for colorectal cancer (84 standard care; 64 patients had early enteral feeding in addition). There were no significant differences …
