Tomato is one of the most widely produced and consumed vegetable crops worldwide. Plant breeders have usually focused on improvement of horticulturally important traits such as yield, fruit size, shape and colour. With increased attention on human health, however, plant breeders also consider the improvement of health-related traits of fruits and vegetables such as antioxidant characters. In the present study, genes controlling both health-related and horticulturally important traits were mapped in the tomato genome using 152 Lycopersicon hirsutum BC_2F_2 individuals. A gene encoding \beta-(1,3-1,4)-glucanase (licA) was amplified from Orpinomyces sp. GMLF18 and expressed in Escherichia coli. The DNA sequence of licA showed that the gene was 707 bp and encoded a protein with a molecular mass of 26 kDa that belongs to family glycosyl hydrolase 16. The main LicA activity was observed to be cell-associated for the licA containing transformant E. coli, and the enzyme expressed in E. coli showed the highest activity at pH 5.0-6.0 and at temperatures of 40-50 °C. One-year-old olive (Olea europaea L. cv. Gemlik) seedlings were exposed to increasing levels of salinity in pot culture. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with 6 replicates. Dry matter (DM) percentage, sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) concentrations, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, reducing power (RP), total phenolic content (TPC), and proline (PRO) content were determined in the leaves of the plants. The results showed that the olive plant used physiological and biochemical mechanisms consecutively to alleviate the effects of salt stress. A comparative study of solid-state fermentation (SSF) and submerged fermentation (SmF) for the production of alkaline lipase from a new isolate, Aspergillus fumigatus MTCC 9657, using defatted rice bran (DFRB) as a substrate was studied. Different process parameters, such as incubation period, initial pH and incubation temperature, were optimised to achieve the maximum yield of the alkaline lipase. Maximum enzyme production (8.13 U/mL) was obtained by day 7 of incubation in SSF compared to day 4 in SmF at an optimum pH of 8.5 and ambient temperature of 30 °C. The main goal of this study was to understand the trends of evapotranspiration (ET) and other micrometeorological parameters within the growing season above a Japanese red pine forest in Japan. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects on the structure and ultrastructure of pepper plants (Capsicum longum A.DC.) exposed to UV radiation under greenhouse conditions. The plants were grown in a growth chamber under uniform environmental conditions and after 35 days were exposed to UV-A and UV-C radiation for 15 and 8 days, respectively. Changes in root growth were not significant, but shoot growth decreased in UV-R-exposed plants and decreased significantly in UV-C-exposed plants. The role of mineral elements (ppm), protein and oil content (%), and saponification and free fatty acid values in contributing to resistance against insect infestation was investigated in 4 fish species: Clarias gariepinus, Parachuma obscura, Hydrocynus sp., and Malapterus electricus. Smoked fish samples were purchased from a local market in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, packaged, and maintained at 4 ^°C for 7 days. In vitro antioxidant properties of 3 different extracts of black mulberry (Morus nigra L.) were investigated. Acidified methanol, acidified water, and non-acidified methanol/water solutions were used to prepare extracts. Different solvents caused different protonation on black mulberry anthocyanin structures, which were predicted according to their UV-VIS spectrum. Extracts indicated 2 main peaks at about ~280 and ~520 nm with different peak areas in their UV-VIS spectrum. The rank of extracts' total phenolic content and reducing power values were both found to be in correlation with their absorbance at ~280 nm. Possible seasonal variations of the fatty acid composition (neutral lipid, phospholipid, and total lipid content) of the freshwater snail Melanopsis praemorsa were investigated over the course of a year. Snail body lipids were fractionated by thin layer chromatography. Fatty acid composition of total body lipid, phospholipid, and neutral lipid of whole snail and total lipid of their algal food were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 45 lactic acid bacteria were isolated from 10 different boza samples consumed in Turkey. The isolates were identified with respect to colonial, cellular morphology, and biochemical characters based on API CHL50 (Biomérieux) kit and also automated riboprinting was used to identify of the isolates. These isolates were tested for inhibitory activity against food-borne bacterial pathogens. Antimicrobial effects of these lactic acid bacteria were determined by the agar spot test and also agar diffusion method. Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a gregarious synovigenic parasitoid that attacks late stage larvae of many important lepidopterous species. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the influence of 3 constant (18, 25, and 35 °C) and 1 alternating temperature (incubator programmed to vary daily between 18, 25, and 35 °C at 8 h intervals) on protein and lipid amounts of female and male parasitoids. Some environmental factors affecting the gross efficiency of crude protein (GECP) were studied using 2824 records of 501 lactating Holstein cows. The effects of some independent variables on the GECP were tested using a general linear model analysis. Reproductive Performance Of Turbot (Psetta Maxima) In The Southeastern Black Sea, İlhan Aydin, Temel Şahi̇n
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Spawning time, total fecundity, fertilization, and hatching rates of turbot (Psetta maxima) were investigated in 10 wild female broodstock (mean wt: 3809.7 ± 1238.4 g). Spawning lasted 37 days, from April 17 to May 23. Mean total fecundity was 2329 ± 1260 x 10^3 eggs per female. Fertilization and hatching rates were 30.6 ± 25.4% and 17.9 ± 16.1%, respectively. A significant positive correlation was observed between body weight and total fecundity (r = 0.637, P < 0.05). The timing and frequency of hand stripping, fecundity, fertilization, and hatching rates in turbot are presented.

In this study, some blood parameters were studied in 7 distinct snake species (Dolichophis caspius, Eirenis modestus, Malpolon monspessulanus, Natrix natrix, Platyceps rubriceps, Telescopus fallax, and Typhlops vermicularis) of the families Colubridae and Typhlopidae, collected from various regions of Turkey. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between fetal number and placentome diameters in pregnant sheep. In the present study 25 Kıvırcık mixed breed pregnant ewes were used. Pregnancy of the ewes was diagnosed by transrectal ultrasonography by the 25th day after insemination. A transabdominal probe (6.5 MHz) was used on the pregnant ewes at the 30th day. At this time the placentomes appeared as hypoechogenic areas with a "C"-like shape. Throughout the pregnancies 5 placentomes were measured from each ewe every week. Boron is an essential micronutrient for plants and animals; however, it can be toxic when present at high concentrations. The purpose of this study was to understand the mechanisms of boron tolerance in the Turkish barley (Hordeum vulgare) Anadolu cultivar. For this purpose, 2-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) was used to screen differentially expressed proteins for both control and boron-stressed Anadolu barley genotypes. We determined the time trends in childhood obesity in a representative sample of schoolchildren from Raichur District, Karnataka and investigated the relationship of obesity with blood pressure. Telogen effluvium (TE) is an abnormality of hair cycling. Vitamin D promotes hair follicle differentiation. The importance of vitamin D in hair growth is evident in patients with hereditary vitamin D receptor deficiency. The role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of TE has not been investigated before. We investigated the role of vitamin D, ferritin, and zinc in the pathogenesis of TE. Calotes versicolor specimens were divided into 2 groups of equal quantity (groups A and B). Group A was injected daily with 0.1 mL/50 g bw of vehicle. Group B was injected daily with 0.5 \mug/50 g bw of salmon calcitonin. Lizards in each group were sacrificed 2 h after the last injection on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 10th, and 15th day of treatment. The red-wing tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens) is economically important as food. The current study investigated the limb and trunk characteristics in age-matched [year-of-hatch (yoh) 2004 and 2005], gender segregated birds, and determined differences in stride between cocks and hens. The locomotion trial was completed in a corridor of 0.6 × 2.36 m dimension. The girth was significantly higher in cocks than in hens, while body weight was slightly higher in hens. Fenoxycarb 0-ethyl N-(2-(4-pheoxyphenoxy)-ethyl) carbamate is the most potent juvenile hormone analogue (JHA) against a variety of insect species including the silkworm Bombyx mori. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the effects of this juvenile hormone on major hemolymph proteins of Bombyx mori during the fifth larval instar, by using fenoxycarb and clarifying the interactions between these proteins and the juvenile hormone. The changes in the composition of milk with advancing pregnancy were investigated in Nili-Ravi dairy buffaloes. Forty lactating buffaloes were used, within 2-3 months postpartum. The animals were grouped as high, moderate, and low yielders; synchronized for estrus; and inseminated artificially. Milk yield was recorded daily and sampled fortnightly for analysis. The data were analyzed using the univariate weighted mean and general linear model. Decline in milk yield became significant after the 8th week post-conception. The high yielders had the lowest fat contents. Milk fat increased significantly during succeeding weeks post-conception. The highest fat level (8.5%) was observed in week …
