Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant. Its antiinflammatory effects and apoptotic mechanism have recently been studied in many diseases. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ALA on apoptotic activity in the treatment of periodontitis. Materials and methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: control (without ligature), PED (ligature + placebo, saline; oral gavage), and ALA+PED (ligature + alpha lipoic acid at 50 mg/kg/day in saline; oral gavage). To investigate serum levels of ghrelin in pregnant women as a potential early marker for hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at Fatih University Hospital. Included in the study were 35 women with HG and 31 pregnant women without HG as a control group. The groups were compared in terms of age, gravidity, body mass index (BMI), and fasting serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and ghrelin levels. To investigate whether there is any association between uroflowmetry parameters and blood levels of thyroid hormones in asymptomatic women. Materials and methods: Included in the study were 110 consecutive female patients with no urinary complaints who had thyroid function tests performed in an endocrinology clinic. Uroflowmetric measurements were performed for each patient in a sitting position. Malaria is prevalent in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world and has been associated with some haematological changes. This study determined the effect of malaria infection on haematological values amongst children in north-western Nigeria. Materials and methods: Fifty-eight malaria-infected children, aged 1–12 years, and 58 age-matched uninfected children were studied between September and December 2011 at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano. The effects of excess and deficient boron and niacin on vascular tissues of carrot roots (Daucus carota L. cv. Nantes) were investigated in plants grown in medium both rich and poor in boron and also boron with niacin. Five media were investigated: control (MS medium), boron-deficient MS medium, MS medium with excess boron, niacin-deficient MS medium, MS medium with niacin excess, and MS medium with excess boron and niacin. Checklist Of Small Ruminant Gastrointestinal Nematodes And Their Geographical Distribution In Turkey, Feri̇de Sevi̇mli̇
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This review presents a search of the literature about gastrointestinal nematodosis of small ruminants. The search was performed on 58 articles published on necropsied sheep and goats between 1937 and 2011 in Turkey. This review identified 43 nematode species belonging to sheep and goats, assessed the prevalence of infection in different regions of Turkey, and evaluated the effect of age, sex, race, nutrition, and seasonal condition. This is the first review that specifically evaluated the gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants for 74 annual periods in Turkey.

The effect of Chronogest-supplemented Ovsynch and Co-synch protocols on estrus synchronization, follicular development, and fertility after fixed-time insemination was investigated in goats during the breeding season. Co-synch (n = 24) and Ovsynch (n = 25) protocols were applied to nulliparous does with a body weight of more than 30 kg. The onset and duration of estrus were determined with teaser bucks. The does were laparoscopically inseminated with 11.5 × 10^6 motile spermatozoa/straw at the second gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) injection for Co-synch and 8 h after the second GnRH injection for Ovsynch. The stem tissue of Styrax officinalis L. distributed in West Anatolia was induced with agents such as boric acid and cocarboxylase (thiamine diphosphate), extensive stimulators of resin channels, in order to increase the amount of benzoin volatile oil. While the benzoin content was 120% in the induction medium to which excess boron and niacin were added, it increased to 231% when cocarboxylase (thiamine diphosphate) was added to the medium. Materials and methods: Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and face-to-face interviews were administered to 500 patients older than 40 years of age and attending a primary health care center with any symptoms. Dichelyne minutus (Rudolphi, 1819) is a typical and widespread parasite of Gobiidae. In this research, histopathological changes in the intestinal wall of Neogobius bathybius (Kessler) (Actinopterygii: Gobiidae) due to infection caused by D. minutus were studied. The most heavily parasitized regions were excised for microscopic studies. Cross sections revealed different aspects of tissue defensive reactions due to the free movement of nematodes among the gut contents. Mucosal erosion, increased number of goblet cells, hyperplastic changes in the epithelial cells, and remarkable hyperplasia that formed nodule-like structures with hyperemia were observed in the submucosa. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of serum selenium in coarse-haired Pomeranian sheep and to evaluate the effect of the oral supplementation of selenized yeast on selected performance parameters in such sheep. This study was performed via a survey conducted of a total of 112 cattle operations in Kars and the vicinity and included a total of 2317 head, of which 280 were determined to have foot problems. The financial loss incurred per operation was calculated in accordance with the data obtained. As a result, the prevalence of foot disease encountered in cattle in the region in 2010 was determined to be 12.08%, and although it varied depending on the severity of the foot diseases, the animals were healed in an average of 46.5 days. From January to December 2009, 661 fecal samples from natural cases of diarrheic calves were taken by veterinary staff from the Department of Large Animal Internal Medicine of Shiraz Veterinary School and veterinary practitioners in Fars Province, Iran. The samples were taken from 267 diarrheic calves of high-producing dairy cows (HPDCs) and 394 diarrheic calves of average-producing Holstein dairy cows (APDCs). The efficacy of blood and buffy coat smear examination, commercially available dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, and nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was evaluated in the diagnosis of canine ehrlichiosis in 40 dogs exhibiting symptoms suggestive of the disease. The intracytoplasmic rickettsial organisms were seen in the smears of only 1 dog (2.5%) with an extremely low level of parasitemia. Nested PCR with 16S rRNA revealed characteristic 378 bp bands indicating positive reaction in 8 (20.0%) dogs and sera samples of 21 (52.5%) dogs revealed anti-Ehrlichia antibodies. This work attempted to evaluate the rotifer species diversity indices of Camp Balloki Water Park and infer the state of the water according to rotifers and physicochemical parameters. The diversity indices, species richness, and evenness were assessed every month. The ShannonWeaver index indicated that this habitat had great diversity of rotifers throughout the year. These results were supported by the Simpson dominance, diversity, and reciprocal indices. Water and plankton samples were taken monthly from January 2006 to December 2006. Sampling for this survey was performed in 5 stations located in the bays of Sürmene and Rize in the eastern Black Sea between April and October 2006. During the sampling, the quantities and distributions of eggs and larvae of anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus) and horse mackerel (Trachurus mediterraneus) were determined. For horizontal towing carried out from the surface (05 m), a plankton net of 50 cm in diameter and 500 µm mesh. The hexane and dichloromethane extracts, obtained by re-extraction of the methanol extract of Salvia fruticosa Mill., afforded 7 diterpenoids (carnosol, carnosic acid, carnosic acid 12-methyl ether, rosmadial, isorosmanol, ferruginol, and manool), 4 triterpenoids (\alpha -amyryltetracosanoate, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, and erythrodiol), a steroid (3-acetylsitosterol), and a flavone (salvigenin). The galls (apples) of the collected plant were separately extracted with hexane to afford fatty acids composed mainly of oleic acid (29\%), palmitoleic acid (29\%), and stearic acid (23.20\%), which exhibited high anticholinesterase activity, particularly against BChE. Low phosphate solubility is one of the most important factors limiting the plant growth in Indian soils. Many microorganisms can enhance phosphate solubility, but little is known about the magnitude of their phosphorus-solubilizing ability. The native populations of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and fungi were studied in different rhizospheric soil samples obtained from betel vine plants (Piper betel L.) in order to compare the results. The effects of seasonal variation on the fatty acid composition of total lipid, triacylglycerol, and phospholipid in the dorsal muscle of Capoeta trutta were assessed by gas chromatographic method. A total of 18 different fatty acids were determined in the composition of C. trutta. The variations in fatty acid composition of total lipid, triacylglycerol, and phospholipid were recorded throughout the seasons. The total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were the most important groups of total lipid.
