To examine, for the first time, the effect of a selected Malaysian honey and its major components on the proliferation of cultured fibroblasts. Materials and methods: Honey and some of its components, which include the sugars, the proteins, the hydrogen peroxide produced, and the phenolics, were exposed to cultured fibroblasts. The MTT colorimetric assay was used to assess cell viability and proliferation. Results: The stimulatory effect of honey on fibroblast proliferation was observed to be time- and dose-dependent. Negative-calorie diets (NCDs) are among the popular dieting guides for weight loss; however, there is still little knowledge about this method. The present study aimed to determine the effects of a NCD supplemented with exercise on weight loss and lipid profile, and to compare its efficiency with low-calorie diets (LCDs) with exercise among elderly adult men with abnormal weight gain. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after at least 1 year of unprotected intercourse. In about one third of infertile couples, a male factor is the primary problem. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the most common risk factors for male infertility in Iranian men. Materials and methods: This case-control study included 268 men attending an infertility clinic in Shiraz, Iran. In this study, 161 fertile men were compared with 108 infertile ones regarding risk factors such as smoking habits, drug consumption, hernia, varicocele, job, and BMI. Celiac is predominantly a disease of the small intestine characterized by chronic malabsorption in genetically susceptible individuals who ingest grains containing gluten, such as wheat, barley, and rye. In the present study, we evaluate left ventricular function in patients with celiac disease by using strain and strain rate echocardiography imaging. Materials and methods: Twenty celiac patients and 20 healthy controls were included in this study. Left ventricle systolic and diastolic functions were evaluated with standard 2-dimension, M-mode, conventional Doppler echocardiography. To determine the relationship between androgen receptor (AR) gene polymorphism and prostate cancer in our society. Materials and methods: Thirty-nine patients diagnosed with prostate cancer and 34 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients who were diagnosed in 2010 met the study criteria. Lipids are the main source of calories and considered very important in infant growth. We aimed to compare fatty acid composition of term and preterm breast milk. This is the first study that compares the fatty acid levels of preterm and term breast milk in Turkish women. Materials and methods: Breast milk samples were obtained from mothers of term (n = 15) and preterm (n = 15) infants on postnatal days 3, 7, and 28. To establish age- and sex-specific reference intervals for essential amino acids in a healthy Turkish pediatric population. Materials and methods: A total of 945 clinically healthy children (531 boys and 414 girls, ranging in age from birth to 14 years) were enrolled. Plasma and urine amino acids' concentrations were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: Concentrations of essential amino acids in plasma were higher in girls than in boys in the age groups of 0-1 months and 7-14 years; however, there was no difference in the other age groups. In this study, we investigated the sensitivity of TrichoScan, a computer-based phototrichogram, in the evaluation of diffuse hair loss in women and the relationship between iron deficiency anemia and hair loss. Materials and methods: We recruited 100 female patients with diffuse hair loss. In all of the patients, a 1-cm2 area of hair located in a temporoparietal region was shortened to 0.5 mm. The shaved scalp regions were stained with black dye. The subject then waited for 12 min. To investigate methanol extracts of various parts of Rubus fruticosus L. (Rosaceae) for various neuropharmacological activities, such as anxiolytic, muscle relaxant, antidepressant, and sedative activities. Materials and methods: The extracts were administered to albino mice orally at doses of 100, 300, and 500 mg/kg. The antidepressant activity was determined by using the forced swimming test, while line crossing in a special box was used for assessment of locomotor activity. Helianthus annuus is one of the most important oil species, with a comparatively narrow genetic base. The development of new sunflower cultivars is the focus of many research and breeding programs. Intergeneric hybridization between H. annuus and Echinacea purpurea, a valuable medicinal plant, has not yet been utilized in cultivar development. This paper describes 2 advanced hybrid lines produced from an intergeneric cross between the cultivated sunflower inbred line 6650 and an accession of E. purpurea. The agglutinating annelid Terebella lapilloides Münster, 1833 is commonly encountered in reefal deposits from the Late Jurassic. This annelid is described and documented for the first time from the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous carbonates of the İnaltı Formation in the Central Pontides, Turkey. The whole İnaltı formation, 395 m in thickness, was studied near Bürnük village and 105 samples were collected along the section. The investigated thin sections reveal the shallow water and the reefal/fore-reefal character of the carbonates with coral-sponge frame-builders. To investigate the value of measuring liver enzymes, red cell distribution width (RDW), and mean platelet volume (MPV) in predicting the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Materials and methods: The medical records of all pregnant women followed by the obstetrics clinic between January 2010 and November 2012 were systematically evaluated, and patients with a diagnosis of GDM were identified. An investigation was done to study the heterotic grouping and patterning in quality protein maize inbreds. Biochemical screening resulted in the choice of 3 inbreds each with high (UQPM 2, UQPM 4, and UQPM 21) and low (UQPM 18, UQPM 19, and UQPM 20) lysine and tryptophan contents respectively for genetic studies using diallel analysis. Assessment of somaclonal variability over a period of preservation by in vitro culture is required prior to introduction and acclimatization in natural habitats. The release of neurosecretory material from A2 neurosecretory neurons (NSNs) was stimulated in Lymantria dispar fourth instar caterpillars exposed to a temperature of 35 °C for 1, 12, and 24 h, as well as those allowed recover after exposure (12 h at 35 °C, then 12 h at 23 °C). The effects of physical and chemical sublethal treatments on the antibacterial activity of enterocin KP produced by Enterococcus faecalis KP against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium were investigated. Enterocin KP was not active against intact cells of E. coli O157:H7 or S. Typhimurium. This study aimed to determine the physicochemical properties of the green tea powders produced from 2 different Turkish tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O.Kuntze] clones (Derepazarı 7 and Fener) grown under different shade levels and harvested during 2 consecutive shooting periods. Moisture, ash, crude fiber, and total phenolic contents of the green tea powders were determined based on the experimental factors. The effects of Trichoderma harzianum, T. hamatum, T. viride, T. polysporum, and T. koningii on the wilt disease complex of chickpea caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri and Rhizoctonia solani were investigated under field conditions during 2 consecutive years. Chickpea cultivar Avrodhi, grown in plots inoculated with F. oxysporum f. sp. ciceri and R. solani, showed chlorosis of leaves and wilting of foliage and exhibited a 22%-25% decrease in yield. This study was conducted with 4 bread wheat genotypes to determine the macronutrient content in different plant organs during the grain filling period. Macronutrient contents such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) were determined in lower stems, peduncles, lower leaves, flag leaves, rachises, florets, and grains. High genotype effects were found for all macronutrients and plant organs. N, P, K, and Mg decreased during grain filling in all plant parts except the grain. The objective of this study was to investigate the responses of peanut genotypes to midseason drought, regarding in particular nutrient uptakes and their correlations with biomass production and pod yield. In the present study, response surface methodology was conducted for the determination of effects of some phenolics (gallic acid, ellagic acid, and quercetin) on some stability parameters of mixed oil prepared with sunflower and hazelnut oils (50:50, v/v). In this respect, peroxide value (PV), free fatty acids (FFAs), p-anisidine value, induction period, and refractive index of mixed oil were investigated. Predictive regression equations were constructed for the estimation of each studied parameter (R^2 > 0.861).
