Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The current experiment was conducted to examine the impact of a supplement of microalgae (Schizochytrium limacinum) on the performance, rumen fermentation, and blood metabolites in lambs during summer. Forty lambs were used in a 49-day experiment. The lambs were group-fed either a basal diet (alfalfa hay and concentrate, n = 20) or the basal diet along with 5 g/day microalgae (n = 20). Feed intakes were recorded daily and body weight (BW) was measured weekly. Overall, microalgae feeding increased (P < 0.05) the BW and average daily gain. There were no significant differences for average feed intake or feed efficiency (P > 0.05). Microalgae feeding decreased rumen pH (P < 0.05) and tended to reduce proportion of acetate (P < 0.1), while it increased total rumen volatile fatty acid concentration (8.6%; P < 0.01) and proportions of propionate (13.9%, P < 0.01) and valerate (P < 0.01; 26.5%) compared with the control animals. Microalgae feeding increased (P < 0.05) blood glucose (98.47 vs. 84.97 mg/dL) and insulin (64.14 vs. 29.26 ng/mL), whereas it lowered total cholesterol concentrations in blood (62 vs. 58 mg/dL, P < 0.1) compared with the control animals. The results of this study indicate that microalgae supplement influences productivity and enhances dietary energy utilization in lambs during the summer.

Fructose ingestion is often associated with hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia. The homeostasis of hepatic lipids is mainly determined by the interplay of lipogenesis and fatty acid β-oxidation. In this study, we hypothesized that high fructose intake disturbs hepatic lipid metabolism through an imbalance between these processes. Therefore, we analyzed the effects of a 9-week-long consumption of a 60% fructose solution on physiological parameters, glycemia, and blood lipid profiles in male Wistar rats. The expression of key regulators of fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and lipogenesis in the liver were assessed by western blot and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The results showed …

Sox6, a member of the Sox (Sry-related HMG box) family of transcription factors, plays an important role in embryonic muscle development and adult fast myofiber maintenance. Here we report the expression and purification of a His-tagged version of recombinant porcine Sox6 (pSox6) in Escherichia coli. The recombinant pSox6 was expressed as a C-terminal fusion protein with His6 tag in the E. Coli Rosetta (DE3) host strain. The protein was purified by Ni affinity chromatography, yielding approximately 5 μg/mL. The protein was identified by western blot analysis and confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF/TOF) mass spectrometer analysis. In vitro biological …

Wound healing is an orderly process driven by numerous cellular mediators that aim to accelerate it. In skin conditions such as leprosy and psoriasis, Centella asiatica, which contains high amounts of triterpenoid saponins (TSs), has been reported to have beneficial effects. This study examined the effects of TS fraction of the herb on tissue regeneration and excision wound repair in rat skin. Briefly, TS fraction was prepared from C. Asiatica and applied on the wound area for 7 consecutive days. The IL-1β, NF-κB, and other biochemical parameters were then estimated, followed by examination of inflammatory cell infiltration, epithelialization, angiogenesis, and …

We aimed to determine whether increased levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) directly cause hepatic deterioration and whether it is decreased by ascorbic acid (AA) as an antioxidant. The study included three groups: Control (n = 10), ADMA (n = 10), and ADMA + AA (n = 10). ADMA was administered at 2 mg kg-1 day-1 and AA was given at 50 mg kg-1 day-1 for 10 days. Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transferase, and alkaline phosphatase activities were analyzed. Histomorphological evaluation of the liver was performed based on the Ishak scoring system. When compared with the control, …

Glycation of proteins is a nonenzymatic process in which proteins react with reducing sugar molecules. This process takes place at ?-amino (?-NH+) groups of lysine or hydroxylysine residues as well as α-amino groups of N-terminal residues. In the present study glycation of ?-NH+ groups of lysines was computationally analyzed for 26 proteins based on their 3D structures. We determined the spatial relationship with acidic or basic residues and correlated them with the glycation prediction algorithm Netglycate 1.0 software, which employed primary structure exclusively for glycation site prediction. Of the lysines from 19 of the 20 proteins employed to build the …
