The objective of this study was to simultaneously determine changes in tryptophan and melatonin contents of eggplant seedlings at two different growth stages during a 24-h period. Variations in tryptophan and melatonin levels in different organs (roots, leaves, fruits, and seeds) and the distribution and accumulation of these molecules in these organs during various growth stages were also investigated. In eggplant seedlings, melatonin showed a strong peak at the beginning of the dark period, while tryptophan levels were at the lowest. Comparative Morphological And Cytogenetic Study Of Five Asparagus (Asparagaceae) Species From Algeria Including The Endemic A. Altissimus Munby, Kenza Boubetra, Nabila Amirouche, Rachid Amirouche

Turkish Journal of Botany

Forty wild populations belonging to five Asparagus species including the endemic A. altissimus were sampled in an east-west bioclimatic gradient of North Algeria. More than 250 individuals were taxonomically examined and karyologically investigated. Meiotic behavior was analyzed for each species. New chromosome numbers were consistent with the base number x = 10 for the genus Asparagus, and two cytotypes, diploid and hexaploid, were observed. Four species were found to have 2n = 20 chromosomes, highlighting the prominence of diploidy in North Africa. One polyploid with 2n = 60 is reported here as the first karyological information on the endemic A. …

Turkey has many valuable genetic resources for pomegranate; however, there have not been many studies on the identification and characterization of these important genetic resources. New microsatellite markers were used to characterize a set of 78 pomegranate accessions from Turkey. Using six SSR primers, a total of 41 alleles were characterized with an average of 4.6 alleles per locus and mean probability of identity (PI) value of 0.366. These data indicated a high level of polymorphism in pomegranate germplasm. Five synonymous groups could be detected among 30 accessions. This novel approach was designed to increase the production capacity of Vaccinium uliginosum L. via direct organogenesis. Lateral buds containing one or two leaves were initially cultured in McCown woody plant medium (WPM), Anderson's rhododendron medium, and Murashige and Skoog basal media, each supplemented with zeatin/indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and zeatin/naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) (1.0/0.1 mg L-1). WPM containing the zeatin/IBA combination was the most effective as the basal medium. Soil organic matter (SOM) is a composite indicator of soil quality. Recycling of organic wastes is one of the environmentally compatible and economically viable options to increase and/or maintain SOM content. Our study was conducted to evaluate the effects of vermicompost (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4% w/w) on the consistency limits and the Proctor compaction test parameters of three texturally different soils (sandy loam, loam, and clay) from similar climatic conditions and cropping management practices. Changes in chemical composition and quality traits of carrot roots (Daucus carota L.) grown in organic (ORG) and integrated (INT) farming systems were investigated during two successive years. Three carrot cultivars (Fanal, Rodelika, and Rolanka) were included. Determinations of sugars, organic acids, α- and ß-carotene, and vitamin C were performed with an HPLC system, and a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system was used for the identification and quantification of phenolics. Background/aim: This study was undertaken to determine the changes and relationships between some important milk constituents as well as physical, rheological, and biochemical parameters of milk obtained from Serbian breastfeeding mothers. Materials and methods: Physicochemical and biochemical parameters and the concentrations of vitamins, uric acid, and minerals were determined during the three periods of lactation covering colostrum, transitional, and mature milk collected from 67 mothers who had a term-pregnancy. Background/aim: Autism is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder. This study aimed to assess the clinical significance of amino acid profile assay in autism using cation-exchange chromatography with ninhydrin postcolumn derivatization. Materials and methods: This study included 42 autistic children and 26 apparently healthy children. All participants were subjected to the assay of plasma amino acids (essential, nonessential, and nonstandard) using cation-exchange chromatography with postcolumn derivatization by ninhydrin. Background/aim: It is recommended that a central venous catheter (CVC) be removed if central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) has been diagnosed. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the risk factors for recurrent CLABSI in reinserted catheters in a pediatric intensive care unit. Materials and methods: Patients with recurrent and nonrecurrent CLABSI were compared in terms of the catheter exchange interval, the interval between negative blood culture and reinsertion of the CVC, and the pre-/reinsertion treatment duration. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a total of 1111 adolescent girls aged 12?18 years. The subjects were classified into four groups: underweight, normal, overweight, and obese. Background/aim: Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) are increasing due to the growing numbers of elderly people requiring long-term care and immunosuppressive therapies. The purpose of this study was to examine HCAIs occurring in elderly inpatients in our hospital.Materials and methods: This study prospectively investigated HCAIs developing in all patients hospitalized over a 1-year period. Diagnosis was based on Centers for Disease Control criteria. Background/aim: The DAWN2 (Diabetes Attitudes, Wishes, and Needs) study was conducted in order to ascertain the wishes, needs, and attitudes of diabetes patients, their relatives, and healthcare professionals. The study was conducted across 17 countries, including Turkey, and its objective was to introduce policies that could successfully meet these requirements. In this article, the needs, wishes, and attitudes of diabetes patients and their relatives in Turkey are compared with those from other countries. Background/aim: The aim of this study was to determine the molecular characteristics and antibiotic resistance of 13 (10 inpatient and three outpatient) Acinetobacter baumannii beta-lactamase-producing isolates collected in Bosnia and Herzegovina between December 2009 and May 2010. Materials and methods: Susceptibility testing was performed by disk diffusion and broth microdilution methods. The modified Hodge and combined disk test with EDTA/phenylboronic acid was used to screen for carbapenemase production. This study provides an evaluation model that prioritizes the relative weights of various distance education websites. The proposed approach consists of four sequential steps. In the first step, 25 different subcriteria under 4 major criteria are gathered from the existing literature. Given the importance of borage (Borago officinalis L.) as a medicinal herb, androgenic studies are necessary in order to speed up the breeding programs of this plant species. In this work, we evaluated the effect of silver nitrate, activated charcoal, ascorbic acid, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), previously described as antibrowning agents and promoters of androgenesis. Adding silver nitrate at a concentration of 5 mg L-1 significantly enhanced the androgenic responses of cultured anthers up to ~2-fold for total calli production (53.33%) and up to ~2.5-fold for embryonic calli and embryo formation (30% and 0.3 embryos/anther, respectively) compared to control culture medium. …
