Emerging Vector-Borne Diseases In A Changing Environment, Nurdan Özer
Turkish Journal of Biology
Vector-borne infectious diseases are emerging or resurging as a result of changes in public health policy, demographic and societal changes, insecticide and drug resistance, shift in emphasis from prevention to emergency response, genetic changes in pathogens in the last two decades of the twentieth century. Climate changes also can influence the emergence and reemergence of these diseases which are malaria, dengue, yellow fever, plague, filariasis, louse-borne typhus, lyme disease, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis and viral diseases. West Nile virus is just the latest example of this type of invasion by exotic virus. This paper will provide an overview of the distribution, reasons …

Antimicrobial Peptides: A Potential Therapeutic Alternative For The Treatment Of Fish Diseases, Ali̇ye Sarmaşik
Turkish Journal of Biology
Fish losses from infectious diseases are a significant problem in aquaculture worldwide. However, peptide antibiotics show potent activity against a broad range of pathogens including fish pathogens. Therefore, the ability of antimicrobial peptides to protect fish against infections caused by fish pathogens clearly shows the potential for utilisation of antimicrobial peptides for the treatment of fish diseases. The strategy of overexpressing the antimicrobial peptide genes in transgenic fish may provide a method of decreasing fish disease problems in aquaculture.

Blood Serum Concentrations Of Selenium And Glutathione Peroxidase Activity In Akkaraman Sheep, Taner Pamukçu, Tevhi̇de Sel, Gül Yarim
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Selenium and other essential elements play an important role in animal husbandry. These elements help to minimize infectious diseases, reduce concomitant stresses and bring about optimal productive and reproductive performance. The mean serum selenium concentration of the sheep sampled in this study was 303.65 ng/ml. Such values are considered to be indicative of adequate dietary supplementation. Serum glutathione peroxidase activity in the sheep sampled in this study was also analysed, and the mean glutathione peroxidase activity was 3.65 nmolNADPH+H+/min/mg protein. It is recommended that producers monitor the selenium in serum in order to maintain adequate nutrition and performance in sheep.

Hepatitis C Virus: Genome Organization, Viralproteins And Implications In Disease Pathogenesis, Çağla Eroğlu, Ergün Pinarbaşi
Turkish Journal of Biology
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Infection with HCV becomes chronic in more than 80% of cases and it accounts for 20% of all cases of acute hepatitis. The hepatitis C virus was first identified by the molecular cloning of the virus genome in 1989. It is an enveloped, positive strand RNA virus with a genome size of around 9.5 kilobases. The single-stranded RNA genome of the virus contains a large open reading frame that encodes a large polyprotein of 3,010 to 3,033 amino acids shown to be processed by a …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
In this study, the results of anti- ovalbumin (OVA) monoclonal antibody production and characterization are reported. Splenocytes from OVA-hyperimmune Balb/C mouse were fused with F0 myeloma cells and resulting hybridoma cells were selected in hypoxanthine-aminopterine-thymidine containing medium. A total of 37 HAT resistant hybridomas were obtained. Upon testing the hybridoma supernatants in OVA and mouse immunoglobulin G specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, we observed that two of the hybridomas secreted OVA specific antibodies. The hybridomas produced IgG class antibodies. The hybridomas were grown and the supernatants from the cultures were also tested in a Western Blot assay. The results of ELISA …

Infectious Diseases Concomitant With Urinary Tract Infections In Children, Ayşe Balat, L. Leighton Hill
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Urinary-tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infectious diseases in children; however, the significance of combined infection in the pathogenesis of UTI remains uncertain. Of 48,382 patients discharged from Texas Children's Hospital from July 1, 1991, to June 30, 1994, 1,221 (2.5%) were discharged with a diagnosis of UTI. We retrospectively reviewed the files of these 1,221 patients to assess for concomitant infections and causative microorganisms in patients with first-time UTI, no urologic abnormalities, and no other major diagnoses. Of the 1,221 patients, 511 (42%) had first-time UTI with no urological abnormalities or other major diagnoses, of which …

For most infectious diseases, increased formation of reactive oxygen species is secondary to the primary disease process. Some microorganisms are highly susceptible to exogenous reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) remove H 2 O 2 , and selenium is requird for the activity of GSH-Px. Therefore, to assess the status of GSH-Px and selenium in cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), we determined serum selenium concentration and blood GSH-Px activity in 52 patients with CL and in 38 healthy controls. Selenium concentrations and GSH-Px activities were found to be lower in the patient group than in the controls (p

Genitourinary Abnormalities In Children With Urinary Tract Infections, Ayşe Balat, L. Leighton Hill
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Urinary-tract infections (UTI) are common infectious diseases in childhood. The presence of UTI may be an indicator of a serious genitourinary (GU) abnormality that requires medical intervention. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of children discharged with a diagnosis of UTI from the Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, between July 1, 1991 and June 30, 1994. The purpose of the study was to determine how many patients had underlying GU abnormalities, the specific type of abnormality, and the microorganism causing the UTI. During the 3-year period, there were 48,382 discharges from the hospital, and 1,221 (2.5%) of those discharges were patients …
