To investigate the effect of the presence of pneumonia on the success of noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cases with acute respiratory failure. Materials and methods: Sixty patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) due to COPD exacerbation were included. In this study, we designed and used 2 different type-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods for the detection of Brucella abortus. Materials and methods: There were 2 different primer sets (B4/B5 and AF/AR) selected and used for the amplification of 2 different genes that are present in all biovars of Brucella species, including bcsp31, encoding 31-kDa immunogenic cell surface proteins, and omp25, which is known to be one of the virulence factors encoding outer membrane proteins of 26–23 kDa. The aim of this study was to determine seropositivity for hepatitis A before vaccination in healthy children 12 and 24 months of age and compare seroconversion rates after vaccination between these 2 groups. Theileria equi, a haemoprotozoan of equids, is responsible for endemic infection/latency in tropical/subtropical parts of the world. The present study investigated the immunokinetics of T. equi infection in experimental animals and the diagnostic applicability of single dilution ELISA vis-à-vis conventional serial dilution ELISA. In this study, we compared 2 methods, liquid-phase blocking ELISA (LPBE) and solid-phase competition ELISA (SPCE), for the detection of antibodies to the structural proteins of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). These methods were compared using sera collected from cattle (n = 30) without a history of foot-and-mouth disease infection or vaccination, cattle (n = 180) vaccinated with oil-adjuvanted bivalent vaccine, and international reference sera (positive, weak positive, and negative) for FMDV serotypes O and A. Our focus has been to study and compare the anatomical helical computed tomography (CT) features of the normal rabbit liver with its native cross-sectional anatomy. Helical CT was used for scanning the cranial part of the abdominal cavity. The slice thickness was 5 mm. Frozen transversal anatomic cross-sections with a thickness of 10 mm were obtained from the cranial abdominal part of 4 animals following euthanasia. In this study, 500 honey samples (with combs) were collected directly from the hives in various parts of İstanbul. The presence and the interactions of different microbiological and parasitological parameters (coliforms, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Ascosphaera apis, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Paenibacillus larvae, Melissococcus pluton, and Nosema spp.) were investigated. Ehrlichiosis is a disease caused by Ehrlichia, a genus of obligatory intracellular bacteria that parasitize leukocytes and provoke several hematological alterations. In this work, we investigated the effect of levamisole associated with doxycycline on peripheral leukocytes in dogs PCR-positive for ehrlichial DNA. Twenty-one Ehrlichia-infected dogs were randomly distributed in 2 groups: a control group (n = 10) and a levamisole-treated group (n = 11). A male pony foal aged 2 days, reportedly not passing urine since birth and showing moderate signs of colic, was presented for treatment. The clinical examination revealed moderate tachycardia, tachypnea, and mild abdominal distension. Uroperitoneum was confirmed by peritoneocentesis and abdominal fluid-to-serum creatinine ratio (>2:1). After stabilization of the patient, tube cystotomy was performed using infusion set tubing to bypass the urine, allowing the tear on the caudodorsal wall of the bladder to heal itself without suturing. Amiodarone can be used for treatment of ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias in canine medicine, but its exact role in feline electrocardiography and its side effects have not been proven. The aim of this study was the evaluation of amiodarone and its different dosages' effects on intact feline heart electrocardiograms. Eight healthy stray cats were selected and control electrocardiogram was obtained. Amiodarone tablets were prescribed twice daily at 10 mg/kg for 7 days. To evaluate the amount of intestinal parasite infections over a 10-year period in the Gaza Strip. Materials and methods: Data from the Epidemiology Department, Ministry of Health were collected and analyzed statistically. The prevalence of intestinal parasites was monitored and studied for the period 1998-2007. Results: The present study shows results including the records of 471,688 patients (all ages) who had every provided 1 stool specimen to the laboratories of primary health care centers in one of the 5 governorates of the Gaza Strip. To determine the antimicrobial susceptibilities of various Arcobacter strains isolated from domestic geese, which have great potential for the transmission of arcobacters to humans and animals by contamination of water sources. Materials and methods: A total of 16 Arcobacter strains including A. cryaerophilus (7), A. skirrowii (7), and A. butzleri (2) were examined for their susceptibilities to 20 antibiotics using a disk-diffusion method. To determine the rate, etiological agents, antibiotic susceptibilities, and empirical treatment options of etiological agents of invasive device-associated hospital infections (IDAHIs) in the medical intensive care unit of a university hospital. Materials and methods: Between February 2007 and December 2009, 780 IDAHI cases were evaluated in 1650 patients. Results: Ventilator associated pneumonia, catheter-associated urinary tract infection, and central venous catheter-associated blood stream infection were observed in 415, 242, and 143 IDAHI cases, respectively. A rapid and effective polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, specific for the detection of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in invasive flies, was developed. This duplex PCR technique was specifically designed to amplify the sequences of IS6110 of M. bovis and IS900 of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis. The results of the interference test, simulated contamination test, and several other experiments indicated that this technique had high stability, specificity, and sensitivity with detection limits at 92.98 pg of M. bovis and 110.27 pg of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis. Systemic candidiasis is an opportunistic infection caused by Candida species in animals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pathogenicity of different doses of Candida zeylanoides in BALB/c mice. Thirty mice were selected in this study. Different doses of the yeast were intravenously inoculated to the animals. At first, clinical signs and survival time of infected mice were recorded. Then both mycological and histological examinations were performed for detection of Candida in different tissues. The aim of this study was to investigate whether hantaviruses, cowpox viruses, or Leptospira infections were prevalent in Microtus hartingi trapped in Kırşehir Province, located in Central Anatolia, Turkey. Leptospira spp. was detected in 20 of the 43 (46.5%) Microtus hartingi kidney samples and confirmed by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene. Five of the 20 Leptospira spp. PCR positive amplicons were sequenced, analyzed, and confirmed as Leptospira spp. This is the first study to genetically characterize Leptospira in Microtus hartingi in Turkey. Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (S. suis 2) is an important pathogen of zoonoses, which causes meningitis in pigs and represents a high health risk for humans related to porcine industry. Two outbreaks causing severe acute diseases in humans with high morbidity and mortality were reported in China, in 1998 and in 2005, respectively, which were clinically featured with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Some genes (or encoded products) were known as virulence factors, such as capsular polysaccharide, suilysin, muramidase-released protein, and extracellular factor. Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is a severe, intracellular parasitic zoonosis and is an endemic complaint in Iran. Dogs are considered the reservoir host for Leishmania infantum in the Old World. The aims of this study were to evaluate the relation between anti-Leishmania antibody titers (IgG) and skin symptoms of CanL in naturally affected dogs and to assess the correlation of IgG_1 and IgG_2 subclasses of titers with these symptoms. Anti-Leishmania antibody titers were evaluated in 100 dogs' blood samples with the direct agglutination test (DAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods. The aim of the present investigation was to study the impact of Haberlea rhodopensis extract on the innate immune response in rabbits. The complement and lysozyme activity, percent phagocytosis, and phagocytic index were studied. The analysis of the results showed that the treatment with Haberlea rhodopensis extract, cyclophosphamide, and KLH renders a remittent effect upon the classical pathway of activation of the complement system and the lysozyme concentration in the rabbit blood serum. Malaria is prevalent in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world and has been associated with some haematological changes. This study determined the effect of malaria infection on haematological values amongst children in north-western Nigeria. Materials and methods: Fifty-eight malaria-infected children, aged 1–12 years, and 58 age-matched uninfected children were studied between September and December 2011 at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano.
